"Force fields," Doom said, before launching into a very, very in-depth lecture of how to create energy fields that projected outward force, much like his own.

About midway through the lecture, Doom picked a steel plate from his desk and - without pausing the lecture itself - held it up. A laser turret suddenly lowered from the ceiling and fired a steady beam that burned through the plate in seconds. Doom handed it to a random student seated toward the front of the room and gestured for them to pass it around as proof of the laser's power. He then walked directly into the path of the laser, which changed direction suddenly several inches from his armor and hit the floor to his left. A slight shimmer could be seen on occasion as the focused beam continued to bounce harmlessly off his force field (and then harmfully hitting a padded floor).

Again. Doom did not flinch and he did not stop lecturing for even a moment during any of this.

At the front of the room today, there was a container of brightly-colored foam balls, each just about small enough to fit in a teenager's palm. As the students filtered in, Bruce directed them to each take one.

"These are stress balls." Oh, Bruce, really? "It sounds hokey, but sometimes in everyday life, when you don't have the time to excuse yourself to watch a funny movie, it can help to have something to be able to squeeze in your hand, rather than expressing your frustration in other physical ways."

Like crushing someone's head. Don't do that.

"There's not a lot to be said about these, so I'd rather you have some time to work with them," he said. "You'll find each of you has a role to act out in an envelope under your chair, so please pair up and talk normally. If you become frustrated, you've got your stress ball."

"Oh, and you're welcome to keep these, by the way," he added.

Once again, they were in the Danger Shop for class. At least there was no boat, this time. Instead, they were in the middle of a field. The roar of what sounded like a large animal could be heard in the distance. At Thor's feet was a case of... baked goods?

"Good afternoon, students," Thor greeted. "I trust your weekend has been well?" Without really waiting for a response, he continued. "Today, we're going to talk about the bilgesnipe. The bilgesnipe are creatures native to my realm, huge, perhaps the size of two or three of your large wild cats? With scales, and antlers like..." he started to bring his hands up to the top of his head in an attempt to describe said antlers, but then stopped. "Well. You'll see."

"The bilgesnipe spend much of their time hunting, or if not hunting, engaging in battles for dominance within their packs," and now his voice was raising, as the roaring was getting louder, and the ground starting to shake as... something... approached, "for all their ferocity, however, the bilgesnipe are also very fond of sweets."

Which explained the box of baked goods, yes. Have fun trying to tame your very own scary scaly antlery thing, students!

The class met at the edge of the causeway this morning, where a portal was scheduled to appear in a matter of minutes. Jack kept her remarks brief.

"It's Veterans Day, so you guys don't get a normal class. I booked us a portal to the Mall in Washington, D.C.," she said. "Once we get there, we're going to the Vietnam Memorial. It's a big black wall with names of dead soldiers carved in it. Might not sound like much, but some of the best people I've ever known have ended up names on walls like this. There's always some stupid war to kill more good people."

She paused there, brushing her hair out of her face.

"Some people like to leave flowers or notes at a place like this. Some just want to walk around. As long as you're respectful, that's fine, but if you are a disruptive jerk I will have your ass. Questions?"
