There were turnips laid out on the desks. Large turnips, as well as knives and candles.

"One of the reasons for a change in technology is the availability of new materials, which are in some way better, cheaper, or easier to produce, though probably not all three at the same time," Oz told them, idly flipping a knife. "Take for example, the humble Jack O'Lantern, who's gourdy, pumpkiny good can be seen throughout the land this time of year. But you see, back in Ireland where the practice originated, they didn't have pumpkins, with their hollow, easy to carve shells. Instead they had the humble turnip."

Three guesses where this was going. "Today, kids, you're going to be carving old school."

Today's lunchtime feast was pizza and soda, with some salads to sort of balance the scale. There was also, of course, a small pile of leftover Halloween candy on the table, in case anyone hadn't gotten their fill yesterday.

"Well, Homecoming... was a thing that happened," Zoe said, coughing a little to try to cover up any errant snickering. "I think everything turned out well though, so you can pat yourselves on the back or whatever it is you do to congratulate yourselves. We have a bit of a break from events now, but if anyone can think of something we should be working on, now is the time to bring it up. Anyone?"

"We're taking it easy this week," Batman said. "Plans for an Order section have fallen through and a Law field trip is upcoming. That means we'll need to focus on vigilantism for another week. In the spirit of the holiday we just went through, we're going to focus on costumes."

Batman used the Danger Shop remote to turn the lights on in the shop, showing a large collection of clothes, capes, boots, gloves, and so on in all sorts of bold colors.

"Your costume choices should speak to what you're trying to accomplish. My costume is gray and black. Not only does this help me blend into the darkness when I need to be stealthy, but the colors and shapes of my costume are intended to strike fear into the hearts of criminals. With that, simple colors are better. You don't want to detract from your point with too much."

"With that in mind, get to work. We'll look at your costumes at the end of class."

Billy had ended up with way too much Halloween candy at the end of yesterday, so he'd brought a bunch of it in a bowl, intending to share it with anyone who came by. Then he discovered that someone had apparently checked out all the books in the library on plate tectonics and, well, he was going to be busy enough checking everything back in that the occasional break for chocolate would be necessary.

When the students made their way through the portal at Portalocity today, they would find themselves in some nice, mild weather.

"Hey guys, welcome to Mexico," Clint said. "For some of us, the day after Halloween is just half-price candy day, but it's also a pretty important holiday to a lot of folks around the world. Some call it All Saint's Day, and here in Mexico it's Dia De Los Muertos, but no matter what you call it, it's all about remembering friends and family members who have died. I hope some of you are lucky enough that you don't have anyone to think about, but if you've got someone to remember, today might be a good time to do so. If nothing else, check out the festivities, and make sure you eat at least one sugar skull." They were only a little creepy!

"When you're wooing a foxy lady, you gotta use tact." Which the Ice King had in spades. Really now. Why are you laughing at that? Jerks. "You gotta worm your way into their hearts. And when that fails, you bribe them."

With candy, if the bags of candy on the table were anything to go by.

"The island knows it," he added, picking up a bag to give a shake. "So your homework for the week is to go out and pick up that candy to bring to me so I can show you how it's all done."

He rubbed his grubby little hands together at how many princesses he could give candy then. One was sure to fall for it!

"Now get out there and pick some up! All of you!"

Class was dismissed, it would seem.

"Hey," Kaidan greeted the class. "Today, we're going to do a little thought exercise. No lectures. Just this list."

He gestured at the actual blackboard behind him, which had several descending numbers on it.

"We're going to be talking about aliens over the next couple of weeks. But, before we start, we're gonna have a look at something important: what does life need to happen? What can change? What could be totally different about alien species?"

"I want each of you to come up to the board and write down something that Earth needed in order to facilitate human life." He pointed at another list of numbers right next to it. "And over there, jot down something you think we might find in alien species, and why. Try to keep it down to three words. Feel free to discuss before you get up here."
