"Hi everyone!" Billy said brightly, once everyone had made their way into the Danger Shop. "It's good to see you all again. The first thing we wanted to do today was talk a little bit about Parents Weekend. Some people are going to have friends and family members in town this weekend--" But not everyone, sigh. "--and some of those families don't really know about what Fandom is like. We thought it might be good to have a little discussion about how you guys have dealt with Parents Weekend in the past, in terms of your powers. Do you think it's okay to show off and expose parents to some of this stuff before, you know, graduation, or do you kind of hide your powers, if you can?"

"For actual practice, we thought it might be helpful to do something teamworky today." Shhh, that was totally a word. "We've got a sort of obstacle course here with different things that need to be tackled to get through, and we hopefully made it so everyone will have to work together to get to the end. And if you get to the end, you get a prize!" Because everyone liked prizes, right?

There were no castles or destroyed towns today in class. No, it was just a normal classroom for this particular lecture.

Yes, we're all very disappointed by it.

"Today we will be talking about the perils of holding conquered land," Jaime said, left hand curled against the edge of the desk where he leaned. "Depending on your actions during the war, you may find yourself in more danger while at peace than in the middle of a battle. In a battle, you are at least aware that someone is actively trying to slit your throat."

Intrigue. Ugh. Leave that to the Spider.

"My lesson is on the Conquest of Dorne," he said. "In Westeros, Dorne sits in the southernmost part of the continent, safely protected by ocean, mountains, and desert. When the majority of the lands above them were put under the rule of the Targaryen's, Dorne remained free. This, of course, was something that could not stand when a young king by the name of Daeron Targaryen took the throne. He swiftly moved to place Dorne under his heel, losing thousands of men in the process. Thousands more were lost simply holding it. Now, Daeron had not been a wise king in how he treated his allies during this. Whenever he stayed in the homes of his vassals, he turned the lord and lady of the manner out of their bedchambers in order to claim it as his own. To his detriment as his little habit made it's way to the ears of the Dornish rebels who still remained. The canopy above the bed he'd taken one night had been filled with scorpions. The agonizing death that he suffered then allowed the Dornish to rise up and take back their lands."

“Well, I don’t have scorpions,” Steve had to admit, “but I do have an example to share. You hopefully remember what I’ve said of the Eastern Front in the Second World War in our classes on burnt earth and siege warfare; what I haven’t mentioned before is that the German invasion of the Soviet Union started out very differently. A lot of Soviet peasants weren’t thrilled with Soviet policies and the hard rule of Stalin, and viewed the Germans as liberators...at first. Then they realized the Germans pretty much intended to treat them as barely human slave labor, and started making their lives a lot harder, sabotaging them at every turn and destroying their already stretched supply lines. By turning on what had been his Soviet allies and then overstretching on the Eastern Front while trying to hold too much conquered territory and hold off attacks from the west as well, Hitler lost the entire war, his entire house of cards fell down around him, and he wound up dead and on fire in a ditch.” Steve only wished he had been there to see it.

Jaime smiled at the class. Because people ending up dead in a ditch or covered with scorpions was perfectly normal. Yep. "Today, we'd like you to discuss with your classmates how you'd plan to maintain your allies and win those you've conquered to your side once the battles are done."

Students today would enter into an empty classroom -- well, empty of the pink pony who was usually there to greet them, anyway. Right around the time that they might start discussing the validity of the 15 minute rule*, the door opened and admitted Pinkie, moving at a full gallop and making panicky noises.

"No time to discuss fun nation facts today, everypony!" she cried. "We have a crisis!" She stopped in place, her hooves still wildly moving. "GLOBAL FOOD CRISIS! If we don't solve it today, everypony will starve! And that's not all! Denmark has declared war on Peru, Finland traded away its entire infrastructure in return for lions, and South Africa has claimed dominion over the moon! Or possibly the other way around!

"What do we do, class?" Pinkie sobbed. "What do we do-oo-oo-oo-oo?"

* The theory being that if the teacher hasn't arrived within 15 minutes of the start of class, then it's cancelled and you can all leave

Sholeh was among those who was missing her daemon. There had been a bunny, a giant black puppy, and an adorable little antelope called a dik-dik in their room at various points during the weekend. Today, Sholeh was reading about the proper ways to care for a pet. There was a definite lack of cuddling in her life, okay?

The library was, of course, 'helping'. They seemed to be an impromptu competition about which animal they thought she should adopt. The next book in her stack was about creating aquariums filled with beautiful and exotic fish--but it kept having to fend off the book about pet mice that kept trying to sneak ahead of it.

Though it could just be trying to get away from the book of snakes, truth be told. She might need to keep those two separated.
