This week's class was also held in the Danger Shop. Professor Tomoe stood on top of a raised metal platform at the front of the room, waiting eagerly for the students to fill in on the ceramic floor below. A large red button was set into the far wall, behind the teachers.

Kotetsu, for his part, was standing back with his arms crossed and a scowl. Tomoe had respected his right to head a class on making a heroic choice last week, and now it was his turn to stand back and shut up. That didn't mean he had to like it, though.

Professor Tomoe threw his arms wide. "Welcome to this week's class!" he said energetically. "The past couple weeks have been biased towards the heroic side of the spectrum, so today we're going to take a different approach. What's often demeaned as 'villainy' frequently falls under the umbrella of motivated self-interest. Today we're going to explain that concept through a ... hands-on approach."

A huge glowing grin spread across his face as he hit the button.

And the ceramic floor disintegrated, dumping everyone standing on it into the pit waiting below.

Well, that can't be good. )

Valentine Wiggin sat on the desk at the front of the room, kicking her feet a little as she gave her small smattering of students a little smile. "Allow me to start class this week for apologizing for last week," she said. "I'd explain myself, but let's just say there were squirrels, teal deer, and Carly Rae Jepsen involved, and I don't believe anyone has the kind of stomach for that story today."

"Instead, we're going to turn our focus today on the idea of the story question. One approach to creative writing is to ask yourself a question and, with that story, answer it. What is the meaning of life? How does one fall in love? In the battle between good and evil, who will win? And, of course, what is that?"

The smile on her face was slightly apologetic. "That," Valentine explained, "is in reference to a song. Now, some of you may have never heard this song, but take a moment, and we'll watch this video. I like the video because it sort of tells a story in its own right, though I'm sure we could all have a different interpretation on it. Today, I want you to think about the lyrics. Meatloaf claims that he would do anything for love. He'd run right back to hell and back, he'd hose her down with holy water if she got too hot, but he won't do that.

"So what the hell is that? It's truly one of the greatest mysteries in the world, and it's going to be a mystery we solve today. Take some time to discuss it with each other, decide what you think he wouldn't do for love, write up a story about it, and then we'll share. And I will profusely apologize for skipping class on you last week, but I will absolutely not apologize for earworming you all this morning."

She was just mean like that.

"Any questions?"

Tyrion held up his phone as the students took their places. “This,” he said, “is a phone. I assume most of you have seen one by now. Mine has many functions installed – for example, it permits me to throw birds at wooden structures surrounding evil pigs, to watch movies of cats falling off things, and to use plants to defeat an undead horde. But one of the most basic functions is called texting.”

He hooked his phone into a projector and began to type as he talked. “When you text,” he explained, “you’re sending a brief note to someone using the phone’s network. It might say, for example, please pick up milk or I’ve been here for 45 minutes, where are you?. Or something less useful. For example, what I’ve been writing this last bit now looks like this.”

He hit a button, and his missive appeared on a screen.

Hollis my Nam is thrown Bannister. I typed thin on my phony. They will make you say the wrong thing if Lou err nor careful. Consider thaws put warming.

Tyrion looked at it dispassionately. “It’s getting smarter,” he said. “The function that corrects misspellings used to think my given name should be Tyranny. Thrown is slightly more pleasant, isn’t it?”

“At any rate,” he said, shaking it off, “today you will pair up and practice sending a text conversation to each other. I have some spare phones if yours don’t have this function, and some technical documents if you’d like to know the science behind how it works. Oh, and I apologize for missing last week’s class. I trust my teaching buddy served you well in my stead.”

Ronan sighed and set up a TV at the front of the class. "Sorry, guys," he said. "Movie day today. Enjoy it. We'll discuss it next week in the context of fluidity of sexual and romantic relationships."

When class filed in this week, they would spot their teacher sitting on top of her desk, typing furiously into her Blackberry.

Callie was not going to bother starting class until about five past, this week. On principle.

"Sloth," she called out, finally, not looking up from her texting. "The avoidance of work. Laziness. Yet another minor offense makes its way onto the big bad seven. Sometimes, fatigue is your body's way of telling you that you need to rest. People aren't going to turn into useless lumps if they actually take some leisure time. Sounds to me like the people demonizing sloth want the public to be mindless drones, obedient ones that follow orders from sunup to sundown."

She still wasn't looking up from her Blackberry. "I didn't write much for this class," she admitted. "Because it's sloth. If you want to argue that sloth is bad, then I expect you to put the effort into it. And if you don't bother, that means you don't care enough about the so-called sin of avoiding work to actually do any work, which I'm claiming as a win."

Plus it let her get away with not writing a lecture. That was a plus.
