Heroes and Villains 101, Tuesday, Period 3

This week's class was also held in the Danger Shop. Professor Tomoe stood on top of a raised metal platform at the front of the room, waiting eagerly for the students to fill in on the ceramic floor below. A large red button was set into the far wall, behind the teachers.

Kotetsu, for his part, was standing back with his arms crossed and a scowl. Tomoe had respected his right to head a class on making a heroic choice last week, and now it was his turn to stand back and shut up. That didn't mean he had to like it, though.

Professor Tomoe threw his arms wide. "Welcome to this week's class!" he said energetically. "The past couple weeks have been biased towards the heroic side of the spectrum, so today we're going to take a different approach. What's often demeaned as 'villainy' frequently falls under the umbrella of motivated self-interest. Today we're going to explain that concept through a ... hands-on approach."

A huge glowing grin spread across his face as he hit the button.

And the ceramic floor disintegrated, dumping everyone standing on it into the pit waiting below.

The students would now find themselves in a 12-foot deep pit with slick, smooth walls and water already up to waist level. More water poured in from metal grates set near the ceiling, where a force field shimmered as a see-through roof. A ring of large, strange looking guns were set around the top of the pit. A second red button was set into the floor on the far side of the room, with the muzzle of yet another gun pointing directly at it.

Professor Tomoe leaned over the edge of the platform to look down at the students below. "Water will continue to fill this pit unless someone pushes that red button down at the bottom. And the person who pushes the button dies."

He grinned wickedly. "Although the school administration would probably be upset if I actually killed one of you, so I've simply attached the button to a sensor rigged shoot whoever pushes it with clown makeup. The high quality kind, that won't come off for a good 12 hours. If no one pushes the button by the time the water level reaches the force field, everyone of you gets covered in clown makeup by the high intensity makeup guns I've set up here.

"Unless you're a self-sacrificing type eager to spend the rest of the day looking like a mime, I'd suggest you try to convince someone else to push the button for you."

He broke out in a full, room-shaking maniacal laugh.

Lex couldn't see this ending well. "I don't suppose anyone has a teen foot pole handy?"

"Any reason we can't just go over there now and stomp on it?" Mercy asked. "Then our clothes would get the brunt of the make-up."

If not, she was probably just going to go push the darned thing and be done with it.

"Because that's a solution that only works if we know for certain that what's in the guns is harmless." And Lex didn't quite trust Professor Weird Glasses to be entirely honest with them about that.

Mercy shrugged. "They can't kill us. The paperwork alone would be horrific," she said lightly.

"And if they can, well... then everyone dies if no one pushes the button."

She certainly didn't have a death wish of any kind, but she wouldn't ever be willing to stand back and watch other people die if she could do something about it.

"I suppose we could always try the whole standing on shoulders bit, see how many we could get out."

"No one has to die or be made-up," Lex said, with all the optimism of youth. "We just need to figure out how to trigger the button from a safe distance."

Victor squinted at the guns. "They're metal," he observed happily. "I can pull one down, warp it into our ten-foot pole. Any objections?"

"I might be able to zap the gun over the button, too," Angelica offered.

She'd totally try to save her classmate's lives in real life, but she wasn't keen on clown makeup.

Mercy had been exposed to violent, sometimes senseless or seemingly senseless, death for as long as she could remember. She had no illusions about what it took sometimes to keep the people you cared about safe - or about how far some people would go to get what they wanted.

"Right," she said, a bit skeptically. "And how exactly do you propose we do that?"

She'd already decided. If they hadn't figured anything out by the time the water reached her neck she was just going to go push the button and hang the consequences.

Kotetsu, meanwhile, was looking over the edge to make certain everybody in the class could actually swim. He knew this Danger Shop thing was supposed to be non-lethal, but seeing his students in a pit that was slowly filling with water put him maybe a little bit on edge all the same.
