"Today is our last class," said Hermione, "and I don't know where the summer's gone, either. I wanted to say it's been a pleausre having you all in my class, and I hope you've learned something that you'll put to good use.

"For today, i wanted to talk to you about two things: protesting and boycotting. I'm sure you've probably at least seen the images of protests, with people holding signs and staging sit-ins to make a public show of the fact that they're not happy with things. If workers are outraged at how the store they work for has been cutting hours or benefits, they might picket. They'll march in front of the store, chant things, and make it difficult for anyone to get to the doors to do their shopping. If a person manages it, they also probably get to feel guilty about crossing the picket line. Sit-ins are similar, though rather than marching anywhere, they'll sit in front of or in a public building or wherever and refuse to leave. These are usually peaceful protests, and while police may be called in case things get out of hand, they usually don't need to do anything unless someone starts something. Which means, don't start anything.

"A much more passive way of doing things is to boycott. People who don't like the way animals are killed for food may become vegetarians or give up using anything made of animal products. If you don't like a company's practice, you might stop shopping at their store entirely or buying their product. You can refuse to support the makers of this product until they change their practices.

"For discussion today, I'd like to see if you think these would be effective in changing anything. Do you believe one person can make a difference in this way, or would it only work en masse?"

Library, Monday

It was Monday, and so the library was open as usual. Though with one distinct difference from the usual Mondays: aside from a few minutes early in the morning when he came to unlock the doors and turn on the lights, there was no William to be found anywhere.

"This will be our last class together," Steve said a little sadly at the beginning of the class. "I want to thank you, you've been a great group, and I hope you've all learned something here." Even if it was just "coffee beans do not go in ice cream." Shudder. "This week we're going to make something that you probably never thought of making on your own: pizza! Yes, you can call for delivery and it'll be here in thirty minutes or less, but what if the pizza place is closed when your craving strikes? What if you want something the pizza place doesn't carry? Luckily, pizza is really easy, especially if you don't make your own dough. Don't worry, if you want to make your own dough I have an option for you, too."

"You have - theoretically - been taught how to pack," Morrigan began crisply once the class arrived. "But what you wear can be just as crucial. Metal armor, for instance, will protect well against creatures whose bite can spread the Taint, but is not quite as flexible leather for when speed is of the essence."

"Likewise, if you're going into any weather conditions worse than 'toasty warm', you'll want to avoid wearing what Morrigan is wearing," Alistair added. "I know style is important, but when you're heading into a long hike or a combat situation, you might want to consider something more than some strings and leaves and beads and those odd 'sequin' things..."

Someone might have managed to work out how the TV worked recently.

Morrigan gave him an odd look. "I wear no leaves," she said, slowly. "Feathers, aye, for decoration, and a few baubles, but leather and cloth are perfectly serviceable."

"Maybe if you wore more of it, it might even be so," Alistair said. "I mean, really, don't you feel a little draft... you know, when you step outside?"

"No," she replied simply. "I am perfectly comfortable as I am. Should I require a heavier coat, I shall simply become a wolf, or pull up my hood or barter for another wrap at the next village."

"So much for 'avoiding frivolous use of magic'," Alistair said, and began to become aware of their audience. "...But the point of the lesson is this: dress appropriately. Think about it before you take off, and pack wisely. Take stock of what environment you might venture into, or what enemies you will encounter, and don't forget to wear socks."

"And think about what will you do if your clothes need repair," Morrigan continued. "Can you sew? Or patch your own boots? Do you have money to trade for services if you cannot?"

"And how heavy is your armor? Can you continue to carry it across great distances?" Alistair added. "So... look at what you're dressed like now. Why did you choose those clothes?"

He was going to be very confused if your answer was 'because they weren't smelly'.

"And since we assume you've learned something - I understand that a final test is reccomended, which is ridiculous since you either learned or you have not - you'll get to be hands-on with your choices," Morrigan stated. "I have bits and bobs for clothing repair. You'll need to fix an entire outfit, or trade with your classmates with what you have on you to do it for you."

Much like last week, it was only Tahiri who waited at the causeway for the students to show up this week.

"It seems Master Skywalker is still occupied this week," she told everyone once they'd assembled, sparing a frown for the students who hadn't returned yet, either. "Which is a shame, since this is the last class and I'm sure he would have enjoyed putting you all through something especially difficult."

Although given the town across the causeway, how difficult could it possibly be? Don't answer that.

"Anyway, it's my understanding that this particular time period on Earth is notable for its cultural, er . . . quirks," Tahiri continued. "Which is what you'll all be dealing with today, so have fun, possibly learn something, and try not to die."

The sweeping-arm gesture she made as she stepped away from the clue box wasn't nearly as dramatic as Anakin's might have been, but she wasn't even going to try to match that anyway.
