How To Avoid Misadventure, Monday

"You have - theoretically - been taught how to pack," Morrigan began crisply once the class arrived. "But what you wear can be just as crucial. Metal armor, for instance, will protect well against creatures whose bite can spread the Taint, but is not quite as flexible leather for when speed is of the essence."

"Likewise, if you're going into any weather conditions worse than 'toasty warm', you'll want to avoid wearing what Morrigan is wearing," Alistair added. "I know style is important, but when you're heading into a long hike or a combat situation, you might want to consider something more than some strings and leaves and beads and those odd 'sequin' things..."

Someone might have managed to work out how the TV worked recently.

Morrigan gave him an odd look. "I wear no leaves," she said, slowly. "Feathers, aye, for decoration, and a few baubles, but leather and cloth are perfectly serviceable."

"Maybe if you wore more of it, it might even be so," Alistair said. "I mean, really, don't you feel a little draft... you know, when you step outside?"

"No," she replied simply. "I am perfectly comfortable as I am. Should I require a heavier coat, I shall simply become a wolf, or pull up my hood or barter for another wrap at the next village."

"So much for 'avoiding frivolous use of magic'," Alistair said, and began to become aware of their audience. "...But the point of the lesson is this: dress appropriately. Think about it before you take off, and pack wisely. Take stock of what environment you might venture into, or what enemies you will encounter, and don't forget to wear socks."

"And think about what will you do if your clothes need repair," Morrigan continued. "Can you sew? Or patch your own boots? Do you have money to trade for services if you cannot?"

"And how heavy is your armor? Can you continue to carry it across great distances?" Alistair added. "So... look at what you're dressed like now. Why did you choose those clothes?"

He was going to be very confused if your answer was 'because they weren't smelly'.

"And since we assume you've learned something - I understand that a final test is reccomended, which is ridiculous since you either learned or you have not - you'll get to be hands-on with your choices," Morrigan stated. "I have bits and bobs for clothing repair. You'll need to fix an entire outfit, or trade with your classmates with what you have on you to do it for you."

Quinn made a packing list for her trip to the Green Isles as she listened. What were you supposed to bring to a fairy-tale kingdom, anyhow?

Mercy looked down at her jeans and t-shirt. "They're comfortable and I can move well in them."

Kate, dressed similarly decided the easiest way to answer this was to tack on a, "What she said," tip her head towards Mercy. "I gave up the idea of dressing to look pretty a long time ago."

"I don't know about her," Mercy said, "But I generally prefer to run if I've got the chance."

"If I put armor on I usually find I've taken it off by the end of a fight," Kate said with a shrug, "It gets in the way. I'd rather be able to move."

Hank was wearing the same thing he wore EVERY day -- white long-sleeve shirt, brown slacks, and a blue neckerchief. It wasn't that he didn't own any other clothes, because he had a few. It was just that he LIKED this outfit.

The only difference today was the pair of mouse ears on his head, which he'd been wearing constantly since the middle of last week. He took the hat off and waved it at the teachers. "I'm wearing this because Euro Disney RULES!!!"

"I've got those, too!!!" Hank answered. From his back pocket, he produced a pack of crayons. "But I thought we were talking about clothes!" He also pulled out a rolled-up coloring book, and started flipping through it.

Quinn was in a short-sleeved red sweater over a flowered sundress. "it's pretty and feminine," she said, looking down. "And the skirt's long enough that I don't have to worry about how I sit."

Thank you, Charles. He'd taught Mercy well enough that she could patch up pretty much anything stuck in front of her. It wouldn't be hard for her to fix up an entire outfit for herself and she'd be more than happy to help out anyone else.

Kate had been taught for as long as she could remember to make things last for as long as humanly possible. They just didn't have the money for or access to new clothes.

So yeah, she could sew, and knew enough to pick something that wasn't leather to make that part easier. She didn't enjoy it, but it also wouldn't take her too long to patch something together.

Angelica's grandmother had taught her how to sew, since it was cheaper than buying new clothes when she got a tear in her jeans. This was no problem for her.

Morrigan is dressed in perfectly service clothes, thank you, Alistair.
