doubleohblonde: (Bond is leaning with intent)

Today the class took place in a bustling city, albeit one with surprisingly empty streets.

"Given the past weekend, today we won't be focusing on anything too fancy," Bond said. "A simple high-speed chase utilising the first vehicles you manage to come across."

Though given the apparent lack of cars, the class might wonder if Bond had a high-speed footrace in mind. Then the sound of Greensleeves started playing...

It seemed that the class would be driving ice-cream trucks today.

"Ya all did good on your tests," Kūkaku informed the class that morning when it was time to begin class. "I'm really not surprised, an' I bet not many of you are. So go ahead and pick them up after class if ya want 'em back, an' if not, I'll just recycle 'em for bomb wrappings.

"Today we're gonna do something a little different." She patted the large TV screen in front of her with her hand and grinned. "Makin' sure you don't make mistakes when doing chemistry is one thing, but can you pick out when others goof it up? Remember a few weeks ago when we did bakin' as chemistry? Really, it's one of the most simple examples of chemistry there is out there, with a wide variety of examples and situations where things can go wrong. Today, we're gonna watch some things go wrong, and I want you to see if you can figure out where they messed it up, if it could have been prevented, or if they're just bloody stupid morons."

So one of the twins got some of the lights and clips of a show started to play. That's right. It was time for some Cupcake War failures. And, yes, you were allowed to make fun of their stupid hairstyles or the obsession with being a vegan baker. Who wouldn't want bacon on cupcake? Freaks.

So, by the end of the class, there was a good chance that a lot of the students would be hungry. Or, if you were Deadpool, having flashbacks.

Oh, God, the frosting was everywhere!!!

The classroom and the cocoa were back; Shunsui was sitting at his usual spot in the circle, all things that should be a sign to the students that another discussion class was in order.

"Welcome back, ducklings ♥!" he gave his usual greeting and smile. "I hope you all had a wonderful weekend with your visitors ♥."

He knew he did, thanks to some people having hot sisters.

"Today I'd like to have a discussion about last week's class, where I taught you about Aikido ♥. I noticed that quite a few of you seemed quite eager to learn this method of self-defense, so I have a feeling I know where the conversation will go, but still ♥. You know what they say about assumptions ♥. Things like Aikido have its roots in the non-agression principle of pacifism. While nonviolence rejects the use of violence, non-aggression rejects the use of aggression ♥. Aggression is defined as the initiation of a physical force against person or property, and does not reject the idea of self-defense in response to aggression initiated against yourself.

"We saw in class how something like Aikido can be used to still be fairly nonviolent while also being non-agressive, but can it truly be considered pacifism ♥? Does a true pacifist absolve from all physical conflict? Or are there exceptions, as just remaining passive in the face of violence only propagate the violence ♥? Is there a happy medium? What did you, personally, think of the self-defense philosophy of Aikido and how it applies to your own perceptions of pacifism so far?

"Let's discuss ♥!"

"Okay, so last week I asked you all to pick a topic to research on so you could teach you fellow classmates a little something today," Alaric said once everybody had come in. "One might think this is me being lazy but for teaching purposes I'm going to say it's an exercise in public speaking."

No, it was him being lazy.

"So, with that in mind, someone should volunteer to present first," he said. "And if no one volunteers then I will make my TA go first because it's her job to do the stuff no one else wants to do. So, for Caroline's sake, someone volunteer."

With that he moved away from the front of the classroom and picked a desk to sit at because he so wasn't the teacher today.

It was rare that Rikku needed coffee to get her bounce going, but today was one of those rare days.

This meant that later, when the coffee kicked in, the students should probably steer clear.

"Okay," Rikku said. "This was going to be a movie day, but I couldn't find any movies offhand that didn't have really stupid science in them. So, that's going to be today's discussion. What's something you've seen in a movie that's really stupid, from a scientific perspective?"

She shrugged. "If you're from a culture that doesn't have movies, then maybe there are stories in the oral histories, or plays, or books and so forth, and you've hit the same thing -- something that just doesn't hold together, from a scientific perspective. Or something that didn't seem realistic, and you couldn't shake the feeling that it was wrong, even if you didn't know enough science to say why."

"That's today's topic. Bad science in popular culture. What examples have you bumped into? And you can also mention things you've heard in stories and we can talk about whether they could happen or not. I mean, science fiction, the whole point is stuff we don't have yet, but might some day, so I don't mean that? I mean cases of things like that movie where the guy uploaded a virus from his laptop to the aliens' mainframe computer. Seriously?"

There was extra coffee for the meeting this week. Possibly to try and make up for any familial trauma suffered over the weekend, possibly because there had been an 'incident' with the pot when brewing.

Either way, it was there for them to seem like professionals!

Blackagar offered the group a friendly enough smile, a little more subdued than usual. Someone was very, very glad that their brother flounced left the island.

Someone else's friendly smile may have come from the joy of not managing to meet Blackagar's brother.

The class had received a handwavy email telling them to meet Cindy at Fast Eddie's in town. She met them at the door, wearing her own (non-hideous) bowling shoes. "So, you all survived Parents' Weekend," she said with a smile. "Congratulations. As a reward, we're going to cover some common pastimes of the 21st century."

Bowling and pool and pinball, oh my! )

Grinning at them, she said, "So, for the rest of class, the games are yours. Try things, learn to play, brush up on skills. Have some fun and relax. Call friends to come if you'd like. Have some 21st century fun, okay?"

Rinoa was going to busy herself with research today, as much on time-travel and possession as she could manage to find.

Special Collections might have more interesting fragments, but considering how much magic was in there, she was pretty sure it wasn't safe for her to go in, as she was right now.
