doubleohblonde: (Bond is intrigued by this)

The Danger Shop was set up in much the same way as it had been the previous week. Of course, the class may have noticed some slight differences.

"Sometimes when you are in pursuit of another or are yourself being pursued, dignity falls by the wayside in favour of success and survival." Unless you were Bond. He could make pedalling a giant fibreglass swan look suave. It was a gift. "Your objective today is to apprehend an operative carrying stolen intelligence materials before he can make a trade-off with his contact."

As he spoke a figure dressed in black and carrying a suitcase leapt into the nearest swan and started pedalling like mad. "There he goes now. Do watch out for other watercraft. Also, the mines."

"Alright, kiddos, today we're talkin' about drugs," Kūkaku informed them. "Not in the blah blah blah, don't do them way, but in the blah blah blah drugs are really a compilation of a lot of different chemicals, and if you mix them with other drugs, you get chemical reactions that are either really bad for you or will counteract the effects of the drugs that might be good for you, and then you die, and that'd be bad. So look at us, we're being practical and shit."

When your uppers become downers. )

"One of the biggest culprits of interacting with a lot of different drugs is," and here,
Kūkaku seemed to pull a big round fruit from out of practically no where and tossed it up a little, catching it easily in her hand, "grapefruit. Sucks if ya like grapefruit, but it's not a problem if ya don't. So what we're gonna do, is we're gonna have the twins and Starsmore pass out a lift of the different kinds of drugs that will be affected by grapefruit juice, an' I want ya to partner up with someone and work out the chemical reactions that cause the problem. Lots of information on the list but if ya still have questions, that's what I'm here for. Let's get started, yeah? An' there's plenty of grapefruit for everyone if yer feelin' a little bad for skippin' breakfast."

True, she was just as likely to throw it at your head first, but...

When the students came into their classroom today, they'd find a text sitting beside their mugs of cocoa. "My duckings ♥," Shunsui said with a pleased smile once everyone got settled, "I have quite a treat for you today ♥! Today, we are going to be discussing one of my favourite pieces of literature, besides, of course, my own book ♥. Written by a very smart and clever Greek by the name of Aristophanes, this play is a political satire against the Peloponnesian War of Ancient Greece, where the illustrious woman of the play's title comes up with a most intriguing solution to peace: she rallies up the women of the Grecian world to form a pact to finally bring an end to the war by withholding sex. Devastating, I know ♥! But incredibly effective; as the play itself points out, a man cannot concentrate on swinging his sword when his other sword needs swinging ♥.

"It's a classic example of the 'make love, not war' philosophy that had such vital life in the 1960s ♥. It was the Vietnam War rather than the Peloponnesian War, then, and it was an actual movement instead of a parody play designed to make a point, but the idea is the same: it is much better to offer our fellow brothers and sisters love rather than war ♥.

"Naturally, thought the play is short, I cannot expect for you to all have it read by the end of the class and still have time to discuss it, so I have given you each a copy to take home and read over the week. We will discuss the idea of love over war today, and then again next week after you've had a chance to read through the text and see if it manages to influence your opinion any ♥. Today's discussion, then, shall be a broader one: does love have any place in war? Is it necessary to have love to keep a war humane? Or is there no such thing as humane war, and therefor, love could only interfere with the success of a war? The play was written to make people laugh, but it suggests that the world is a better place when people spend more time with each other than with their weapons ♥. The war is a senseless waste of time, money, and resources, when peaceful times are spent building the nation; wars not only break the nation, but it also disturbs families and relationships. And, of course, in unity, there is strength ♥. This could be said for either side of the coin, but isn't it much better to have that unity in peace rather than war ♥?

"When the Chorus of Men claim, 'There is no beast, no rush of fire, like woman so untamed. She calmly goes her way where even panthers would be shamed,' the Chorus of Women proclaim in response, 'And yet you are fool enough, it seems, to dare to war with me, when for your faithful ally you might win me easily.' Perhaps it is just me, but it seems to ask, Why go into war when peace could easily be an option ♥? Or is it not so easy? Is holding back something...anything...that the other party might need, be it sex or be it goods or resources or hostages or treasures, and refusing to give it back without the promise of peace a nefarious course of action ♥? Or is any means of achieving peace acceptable means ♥?

"'We love peace, but not peace at any price,' says Douglas Jerrold, and Marvin Gaye, another personal favourite, informs us that 'War is not the answer, because only love can conquer hate.' But where do you stand on the place of love in war ♥?"

The fact that his TV kept playing chick flicks instead of the damn weather channel left Alaric pretty irritated. He so hated romantic comedies. He asked the kids to meet him down at the Danger Shop, which had been transformed into a shooting range.

Nothing says romance like a shooting range )

Cindy was quite pleased that her lesson today didn't involve either books or movies, as the island had made both options completely untenable. She was already not a fan of the upcoming holiday--two spectacularly failed marriages will do that to you--and the island's insistence on playing it up was already getting on her nerves.

Which might have been why she was a little short today when everyone filed into the Danger Shop. "Today, we'll be looking at ways to keep from starving to death, no matter how lousy you are at cooking," she said. "First and foremost, the best way to keep yourself fed and fed well is to have an extensive number of local restaurants and delis and the like programmed into your cell-phone. Many places deliver, which means they bring the food directly to your home in exchange for a slight fee or tip to the delivery person; and still others allow the pick-up option, where they will prepare your meal to go, and you can bring it back to your home where you can eat in peace and with a minimum of socialization."

Sometimes, a lack of socialization was exactly what someone was looking for, okay? "But eating out every night can get expensive. While a fast food chain might offer a meal for just a few dollars, even lower-end chain restaurants charge close to $10 for a single meal, which, if you remember from last week, is more than you made in an hour. Fortunately, there are other options. These options are slightly more expensive than buying ingredients to make a similar meal from scratch, but they do have the benefit of being faster, easier, and more difficult--though not impossible--to mess up."

With a touch of a button, they were in the freezer section of a grocery store. "Many stores offer premade meals that can be stored in your freezer until you're ready to eat them. There is a large variety of possible meals: vegetarian, vegan, low-fat, low-carb...While there are not frozen foods to fit every diet, they do try to fit the most common ones. Many of these meals can be cooked in an oven, a microwave, or a toaster oven." Beckoning the students over a few aisles, Cindy pointed to a small area where several of the named appliances stood, waiting to be used. "Today, I want you to find a few meals you think you could eat--and feel free to look around the store, there are plenty of quick foods you can find beyond the freezer section--" Like Ramen! And Easy-Mac! "--and then try your hand at making some of them. See if you can find a brand or a dish that's new to you, but that you like. Also, keep an eye on the prices of things and figure out how they could fit into your personal budget."

Rinoa was struggling to stay awake, today at the library. She'd been up all night, Sunday, in Louisiana, and then had slept all day Monday. Naturally this meant she'd had trouble falling asleep Monday night, and now, on Tuesday, her body wanted to crawl right back into bed.

She had grabbed a few books off the shelves, but when she found her way back to the desk, all she found in her hands were romances.

Strange. She must be more tired than she thought.

Good thing she enjoyed romances.

Subject: Tuesday's Staff Meeting

Our apologies: today's newspaper staff meeting was unexpectedly cancelled because we blow the door of the journalism room appeared to be stuck shut with...something green and slimy that we didn't want to examine too closely, though samples were taken for the administration. A work order has been filed and the office assures us the room will be open next week. In the meanwhile, story ideas and discussion are welcome by e-mail.

yours regretfully,
Cally and Blackagar

P.S. Should you happen to own a copy of the AP Style Handbook, Cally suggests you read it with caution today, as hers has been mysteriously replaced with something called the Kama Sutra, which, while educational, contains no useful information about headlines or paragraph formatting.
