Loki was almost expecting to be met at the doors of the school by security, telling him he'd fucked up enough last week that he wasn't welcome back and they'd be filling his spot with educational movies about sexual education and not smoking. Luckily that wasn't the case and he was back in the classroom early enough to set up a few things for today's class.

Once everyone had arrived and was settled, he stood up and made his way to the front of the classroom. "Morning. I hope everyone slept well and wore clothes that they don't mind getting a little wet."

Oh, had he forgotten to warn them? Oh, darn.

Once he was done rambling, he leaned against the edge of his desk and waited for the class to start the activities.

"Morning!" Daisy, as could be expected, was in a good mood when it came to be time for class to start, perhaps a better mood than anyone ever really had a right to at this time in the morning. Which is because she never skipped breakfast. They'll get to that. On the board behind her was a list:

Cut for a lot of talk about fooooood.... )

"Help each other out, have fun, I hope you like them, and I'm here if you need help, too. I've got more ideas, too, for breakfasts, especially quick ones, if you're interested. We don't always have time in the morning, and, believe me, I've seen far too many cops get that awful little belly from thinking donuts and muffins are perfectly good breakfasts. The only reason you don't see it with this police force is because, I swear, all of 'em but me have a super-human metabolism. But I digress. Let's get to cooking."

The Danger Shop had been made up today to resemble a standard mess hall with tables and chairs and such, all in regulation gray. There was, of course, one longer table at the front where the important people would sit, and the rations machines near the door for actually obtaining one's food. As the students came in, they were ushered with a little flutter of Rimmer's fingers to sit in the smaller round tables.

"Now then, as it said on your syllabus," a corrected copy of which had not been handed out since last class, "we will be learning how to impress one's peers and superiors while in a dining setting. Off-duty communication is of the utmost importance and your invitation to the officer's table is a mark of hard work and determination well rewarded."

One that he'd only been given once, but he wasn't mentioning that.

"At each table there are menus of different foods with only the names listed you can request from the ration machines at the back. Once you've picked something, you will return to either a table with another classmate or, if you're feeling brave enough, the officer's table at the front where I will be sitting.

"I will be observing you all carefully throughout and critiquing you on your choices. Students, feel free to point out the smegging obvious to each other if one your classmates has missed the point of the exercise. Wexler, if you're here, feel free to be especially scathing. We want people to learn here.

"Now get on with it! And not a word about that mess last night..."

As much as Sam loved being in the library, it was a lot harder to come in during the summer when the weather was especially nice. He'd made the switch to iced coffee today, and was sipping away as he made his way inside to get set up for the day.

Once more Tim met the students at the campfire.

"Hey guys, I hope you had a good week. And for you new kids, I hope you're settling in alright. Anyone get bitten by a Gremlin?" Besides me?

"Last week, I said that this week the theme would be a story from our own lives. These can take any form really. Lots of times people like to tell about funny or strange things that happened to them. Sometimes they brag about things they've done. Or complain about horrible things they've had to endure.

For example," he settled himself more firmly onto the log he was sitting on, "Last year, I went to hell."

Once Upon a Time )

"I guess the weirdest part was actually that we convinced the legions of Hell to help stop the end of the world."

Maybe he should have chosen a different story.

"Next week we'll focus on Tall Tales."

Algren wasn't even going to wait particularly long after the students gathered around the main campfire today before launching into his lecture. He was just patient that way.

"As I said in the last lesson, there are four basic stages to culture shock. Today, we'll be focusing on the 'Wonder' stage, which typically includes 'jet-lag' as well." He made a bit of a face at the phrase. It was still relatively foreign on his tongue. "I'm certain we've all gotten over the trip here. And if you haven't, I'd seriously consider looking into writing a nasty letter to whoever manages whatever method of transportation you used."

Algren allowed himself a moment to be amused at that notion. Of course, he'd gotten to Fandom via leaky rowboat. He'd also written himself many angry journal entries since.

"The Wonder stage of culture shock is really just what it sounds like. You're in a new place, be it a new town, state, country, or world, and everything seems fresh and exciting and different. You might be moving in, or you might just be passing through, but you're discovering this new place for the first time. For all intents and purposes, you're a tourist until the shiny newness wears off some."

He smirked faintly and gestured toward a box of island maps and binoculars sitting on the ground beside him.

"It's possible that you haven't managed to get this stage out of your systems yet, considering how many of you are new to the island. I'm giving you the chance to do so now. The maps are marked with points of interest that you might want to investigate on the island. The binoculars, for those of you not in the know, will make things that are far away appear closer than they actually are if you hold them to your eyes. I'm giving you the remainder of class to visit as many of the locations on that map that you care to visit."

A beat.

"And just so you don't think that this is a throwaway class and I'm giving you free reign over the rest of the period, I have a box of cameras here. You point this end at what you want to take a picture of, and you hit the button. It's apparently what modern tourists do. And it means that I get photographic evidence that you guys did your assignment today. Feel free to make the photos as touristy as you wish. Take it in. Welcome to Fandom."

Once again class was held at the main campfire. The first thing the students would have noticed on arriving was a trestle table set up with various flowers, fans and leaflets.

Today, we're going to be covering flirting... )
