Art of Seduction [Wednesday, Period Four]

Once again class was held at the main campfire. The first thing the students would have noticed on arriving was a trestle table set up with various flowers, fans and leaflets.

"Today, we're going to be covering flirting," Bond began once the class had arrived. "The ability to flirt and to recognise when you are being flirted with in turn is one of the more valuable life skills you can acquire. Regardless of whether you actually intend to sleep with them, flirting with a skilled partner can be almost as good. If occasionally unhealthy for the ego.

"A large part of flirting involves a combination of conscious and unconscious body language," he continued. "Often a person will mirror or mimic the body language of a person they find attractive. Learning to pick up on and interpret these cues is often of immense aid." He continued in this vein for a while, explaining and demonstrating a range of cues.

"Often a society will evolve unique and arguably bizarre methods of flirtation. Two methods that have mostly fallen out of use were the use of fans to convey an elaborate system of signals." Bond picked up a fan and held it up before his face, fluttering it suggestively. "And floriography, also known as the flower language, which uses arrangements of flowers to much the same effect.

"One still current method of flirtation is the pick-up line, which I really would suggest you don't use as they tend only to work in cases where the user would be perfectly capable of flirting without them. In fact, over the years I've found that being yourself is often the most successful method of flirtation.

"Now for the rest of the class, I would like you to experiment with the various methods of flirting I've discussed with you today. Try flirting with a variety of your classmates and afterwards discuss with them why your attempts would or wouldn't have succeeded if it had been a real life attempt."

Jack was almost little sad to hear floriography was out of fashion now. He'd never gone in for it much himself, but it was lovely to speculate on how many messages were intended when one took note of ladies' nosegays during a dance.

Flirting. Oh dear.

Penelope kept her eyes lowered, though she was paying rapt intention to the lecture.

Liir listened, feeling as if he was actually getting quite a lot from the class. He wondered, absently, if fans were still in use up in Gilikin.

Learning about how normal people interacted was interesting.

Attempting it herself? Not on the top of Raven's To Do list.

Jack put a red poppy in his lapel, gathered a mixed bouquet to hand to others, and looked for someone to practice with.

Funny how she just purchased red poppies yesterday. She went with a fan and wondered if she could appear inconsequential enough to not be noticed. Even thinking of trying to flirt warmed her cheeks.

Emma considered a pink rose for a moment, but discarded it as too obvious before braiding herself a small crown of morning glories and white hollyhocks and placing it over her hair. There. Let it serve as challenge and warning for anyone interested.

Liir wondered what it was that kept bringing him back to those bloody romance novels he'd grown up reading. Oh he could do this, but he always felt like a joke, those kinds of things coming from him.

Taking into account what the professor had said, he chose a small sprig of sweet brier before heading into the fray.

Dor was at a complete loss as he fumbled with the flowers. He was not really cut out for this kind of thing.

Marco was standing around, smirking. He didn't need flowers to flirt.

Looking over the flowers, Morgana finally settled on violets, and slipped one into her hair behind her ear before looking at everyone else.

Helen was in a bit of an odd mood and briefly considered a lime blossom, but finally settled for a dandelion as being both whimsical and standing for coquetry itself.

Jenny's twisted sense of humor suggested bloom of wolfsbane or a lime blossom, but she finally decided on a camellia, which she tucked behind one ear.

She wasn't going near the fans with a ten foot pole.

George wrinkled his nose at the aconite, feeling a sneeze building at the back of his head, but he shook it off and took a sprig of it, unable to resist the... associations.

It was also called wolfsbane, after all.

He looked around the class and flailed a little on the inside as he tried to figure out how to approach one of the girls.
