Art of Seduction [Wednesday, Period Four]

Once again class was held at the main campfire. The first thing the students would have noticed on arriving was a trestle table set up with various flowers, fans and leaflets.

"Today, we're going to be covering flirting," Bond began once the class had arrived. "The ability to flirt and to recognise when you are being flirted with in turn is one of the more valuable life skills you can acquire. Regardless of whether you actually intend to sleep with them, flirting with a skilled partner can be almost as good. If occasionally unhealthy for the ego.

"A large part of flirting involves a combination of conscious and unconscious body language," he continued. "Often a person will mirror or mimic the body language of a person they find attractive. Learning to pick up on and interpret these cues is often of immense aid." He continued in this vein for a while, explaining and demonstrating a range of cues.

"Often a society will evolve unique and arguably bizarre methods of flirtation. Two methods that have mostly fallen out of use were the use of fans to convey an elaborate system of signals." Bond picked up a fan and held it up before his face, fluttering it suggestively. "And floriography, also known as the flower language, which uses arrangements of flowers to much the same effect.

"One still current method of flirtation is the pick-up line, which I really would suggest you don't use as they tend only to work in cases where the user would be perfectly capable of flirting without them. In fact, over the years I've found that being yourself is often the most successful method of flirtation.

"Now for the rest of the class, I would like you to experiment with the various methods of flirting I've discussed with you today. Try flirting with a variety of your classmates and afterwards discuss with them why your attempts would or wouldn't have succeeded if it had been a real life attempt."

Jack was almost little sad to hear floriography was out of fashion now. He'd never gone in for it much himself, but it was lovely to speculate on how many messages were intended when one took note of ladies' nosegays during a dance.

Jack put a red poppy in his lapel, gathered a mixed bouquet to hand to others, and looked for someone to practice with.

Jack was entirely pleased by this class so far, and he grinned as he waited to see if anyone had questions.

Flirting. Oh dear.

Penelope kept her eyes lowered, though she was paying rapt intention to the lecture.

Funny how she just purchased red poppies yesterday. She went with a fan and wondered if she could appear inconsequential enough to not be noticed. Even thinking of trying to flirt warmed her cheeks.

Emma considered a pink rose for a moment, but discarded it as too obvious before braiding herself a small crown of morning glories and white hollyhocks and placing it over her hair. There. Let it serve as challenge and warning for anyone interested.

Liir listened, feeling as if he was actually getting quite a lot from the class. He wondered, absently, if fans were still in use up in Gilikin.

The small dark-haired girl with the deformed nose looked like she'd rather be almost anywhere than in this class, and Jack decided he craved the challenge of flirting with her.

He approached her slowly, looking even younger, slighter and less threatening than usual, and plucked a white lily out of his bouquet to offer her. "Hello," he began. "I hoped you would accept this small gift."

Liir wondered what it was that kept bringing him back to those bloody romance novels he'd grown up reading. Oh he could do this, but he always felt like a joke, those kinds of things coming from him.

Taking into account what the professor had said, he chose a small sprig of sweet brier before heading into the fray.

"No dahlias," Jack observed as he materialized beside her because he is determined to tag to every girl in class, apparently. "I would have given you one."

A brief smile. "Good afternoon, Miss Frost." He knew her name was Emma; the title simply amused him.

Emma's amusement was probably apparent to everyone, but she was around and definately available for questions.

So intently was she staring down at her fan, thinking to go unnoticed, that someone speaking to her was slightly startling.

She blinked and looked from him to the lily, and back again. "Hello," she replied quietly, with a small smile. "Why would you gift me with a lovely flower?" There were much more beautiful people here to choose from.

That was the thing about Jack; he might seem like he'd fly away at the first sign of a diversion, but he noticed almost everything.

"Because the white would be lovely against your hair," he offered. "My only question is if you would accept such a thing."

"Mr. Priest," Emma answered, inclining her head slightly. "I thought perhaps giving myself a dahlia would have been overkill. I wouldn't want to seem completely unapproachable, after all."

Her eyes sparkled mischievously. "Although I wouldn't be adverse to receiving such a fine gift from a handsome gentleman. I don't suppose you've seen any, have you?"
