Sam had gotten to class very early that morning. On her desk were a number of different textbooks, open to different lessons, and a notebook, full of ideas for classes and lab experiments. On the front chalkboard, she'd printed her name. On the chalkboard to her left were a number of complicated formulae which had nothing to do with anything she'd be teaching her students, but she'd had an idea, and there they were.

And lo, did Sam attract teal deer )

"Finally, as a final project, you'll be designing and building pumpkin chuckers in teams of two. Which, for those of you who are uninitiated, are like catapults or trebuchets, but with pumpkins. So, start thinking about your design ideas and who you want to pair up with, and get back to me with the pairs by next week, okay? Now. Who's first?"

Minsc was feeling exceptionally proud of himself for having set up the fandangled Danger Shop thingermajig to resemble a classroom.

...Kind of. It was hardly traditional, but he did manage to get close. There were desks, but they were very short and, instead of rigid chairs, the students would find plush pillows to sit on, inspired by what little he could remember of his education in Rashemen. There wasn't a desk in front, either, just Minsc sitting cross legged on a larger pillow, with a hamster balanced on his knee. He had originally programmed a bigger desk for himself, but had gotten so frustrated with making it that he had, instead, just programmed it in a heap of pieces to one side of the room, presumably thrown in a fit of rage and annoyance.

The class might also notice that, instead of a blackboard, there was a ledge behind Minsc, covered in a thick and cushioning layer of hay and straw. Settled in the bedding were several eggs, of various size, type, and colour.

The forecast for Monday called for sunshine with a high of 83° (or 28° C) and a light breeze, so Mike handwavily e-mailed his students the night before and informed them that their first class would be held outside on the school lawns. When the students arrived, they would find that Mike had set up a picnic table in an open area, far from any shade.

"Good morning, students! My name is Mike Cannon and I'll be your instructor for Greatest Achievements in Engineering. Today, I thought it would be fun to start out with a picnic lunch," said Mike with a grin. "Grab yourself a copy of the syllabus and help yourself to something to eat and drink, and then we'll get started with introductions before talking about today's subject."

There was the typical spread of picnic foods: potato salad, macaroni salad, coleslaw, and a cold cuts tray with the fixings for sandwiches. Mike had also thought ahead and provided pitchers of lemonade and soda as well as bottled water. But there was a catch -- the food and drinks had not been chilled, and they had been left out overnight. By now, the perishable foods were starting to smell a little funny, and the warm drinks would not provide much refreshment in the hot sun.

Even Mike looked like he was sweltering in his dark suit, but he pressed on. "So, if you haven't figured it out yet, today we're looking at the importance of air conditioning and refrigeration, neither of which we have at this moment," he said. "I would ask if you can imagine what it's like to live without them, but I'm pretty sure you're getting the idea. The first air-conditioning system wasn't installed until 1902, and the first self-contained refrigerator was displayed at the World's Fair in 1904. A century later, there's no way we could function in the summer without them. Because these cooling systems have become so essential to modern life, they're a prime example of engineering making a serious contribution to our standard of living."

"Oh, and now that we've covered all that, the real picnic should be here shortly," Mike added, checking his watch. Sure enough, an NPC delivery guy arrived with fresh food and cold drinks. "Enjoy! And Naomi, could you stay after class for a moment? Thanks."

Instead of a gym this morning, Cal Stephanides was in a library, opening it up, taking a slightly worried look around, and then settling behind the desk. He still wasn't sure why he went out and got this library position, but he figured it wasn't like he had anything better to do. He just hoped that the responsibilities weren't taxing and the he could go back to trying to get more reading done.

And coffee, of course, was a necessity.

Another semester, another batch of bright and shining students.  Each desk had a copy of the syllabus ready and waiting, and Ghanima sat on her desk, hiding her smile behind her tea as they filed in; mentally cataloging the new and familiar faces.  Apparently, a few of them were gluttons for punishment.

The moment the bell rang, her eyes snapped from the door to the children seated around the room.  "Good afternoon and welcome," she said in a clear voice that carried effortlessly.  "This is the Art of War, and I am Lady Ghanima Atreides.  You may address me as Miss Atreides, Lady Ghanima, Miss Ghanima, or some variation thereof.  If you are in the wrong class, please feel free to leave at this time.  For those of you whom I have had in class before," she smiled suddenly, looking far less severe.  "Welcome back."

He who wishes to fight must first count the cost. )

"Know thy enemy, know thyself.  We'll cover it more in-depth later, but for today I would like you to go around the room and introduce yourselves.  Give us your name, class, and some random fact about yourself.  Pay attention to what your classmates have to say, you never know when such information could come in handy."

"Oh, and Reno, see me after class please."

As per usual, Abby Irene leaned at the front of the class as her new students made their way into the room. She was pleased to see that she had a smaller collection of students than last semester as, of course, the class was somewhat more intensive.

As soon as they were all in their seats, she gave them a bow and moved from her spot at her desk to the middle of the front of the room.

"Good afternoon, class," she greeted them with a smile, "I'm glad to see some old faces and even more glad to see new ones. Let's get on with it, shall we?"

The start of a new school year was always fun, and Lily was completely excited to have a new class. And one that had desks and she actually got to teach stuff to.

"Hi, everyone," she greeted them. "Welcome to Hands-On Art. In this class we're going to be learning not much about the history of art, though we will get into that a little, but it's more of a how-to, where you'll get to create your own works and figure out what mediums and styles work for you. And if it's not something you're serious about, sticking a lot of colors on a canvas can be a lot of fun. Or even cathartic.

"We'll get into that next week, though. Today's your token introductions class, nice and easy for the first week. You can just stand up, tell us your name and what year you're in, and why you're taking this class. And then we have the world's easiest art project, which is stick figures," Lily said, handing out sheets of paper and pencils to everyone. "I know, it sounds amazingly easy, but believe me, I've seen people get them wrong. Get as creative as you want. Give them a house, a little stick dog, whatever you want. I even have some markers up here if you want to add color. And extra paper if you're really ambitious and want a stick city or something. ...Okay, extra credit to anyone who can draw a stick city.

"And I am still looking for a TA. If anyone's interested, see me after class."

When the students come in, they find a sign in sheet and a pile of handouts just inside the door with a sign that said "Sign in and take one."

Once everyone had done so and was settled, John leaned against the desk at the front of the room and regarded his students.

Welcome to Hunting 101 )

At the end of the class, John collected the devices he'd shown the class and said, "Next week will be our first practical class and we will be meeting in the Danger Room. You'll get your first chance to track and dispose of a ghost. Everything you will need to know to do so was covered in this class," he grinned wolfishly, "so I hope you were paying attention."
