Library; Monday [ 09/01 ]

Instead of a gym this morning, Cal Stephanides was in a library, opening it up, taking a slightly worried look around, and then settling behind the desk. He still wasn't sure why he went out and got this library position, but he figured it wasn't like he had anything better to do. He just hoped that the responsibilities weren't taxing and the he could go back to trying to get more reading done.

And coffee, of course, was a necessity.

Cal made sure to tackle the most important task early in the morning: testing the chair's comfort and maximum spininess. He also strove to finding just the right spot on the wall to try to focus on to keep from getting too dizzy or sick.

Now Cal was feeling like he should organize books, or something like that. First, though, he realized that most of it was probably done through the computers rather than a card catalog like he was used to. He sat ready at the machine, determined to work his way through this unfamiliar technology.

Indy had gotten in early and stepped out of the office after feeling victorious for figuring out how the coffee maker worked and decided to share his victory with his library aide.

"Morning," he said placing a spare mug on the desk and holding the pot up in the universal offer of a cup of coffee. "Figure that contraption out yet?"

Cal gave the computer one of the dirtiest looks he could muster, stuck out tongue and everything, and sighed. "No," he admitted, "but I will. Soon. By the end of the day, as God as my witness."

He pointed to the instruction manual he found. "I knew I should have learned to speak Japanese."

The instruction manual was actually in Chinese.

Indy looked over at the manual and picked it up to take a look. "Well you could but you'd be better off learning Chinese if you wanted to learn how to use it."

Cal looked at the man for a moment, then shifted his eyes to the manual in his hands, and then finally just threw up his own hands in a gesture of frustration that didn't surface on his face.

"Card catalogs," he said. "Perfectly fine system. Anyone with an ounce of intelligence could figure it out. Don't they say that if it isn't broken, don't fix it?"

"Won't get any argument from me," Indy said holding up his hands in agreement. "I'm just glad people are still reading books."

Cal gave a faint grin at that as his hands settled down, folding behind his head as he leaned back in his chair. "Safe to assume," he asked, "that you're the new librarian guy?"

"Indiana Jones," he said offering his hand as a greeting. "And since this Monday, you must be Cal."

"That's right," he said, taking the hand in a shake that was decidedly firm, "Cal Stephanides. Good to meet you, Mr. Jones."

He decided not to ask if that was Indiana, like the state. He'd shoot himself in the foot if his name was Michigan, and the guy probably got it all the time.

"Are you new here as well?" Indy asked. "I'm still adjusting to the fact that I'm eighty years in the future."

"Oooh, eighty!" Cal sounded impressed, and his grin grew a little. "It's only about thirty years difference for me, but it's still a trip, so I bet it's pretty odd for you, too. And I started here last summer. My mom thought I should try the summer camp thing, decide if I liked it, and then, if not, we'd try a different school."

There was a slight pause.

"Clearly, I didn't think it was too bad."

"I hear this place can grow on you," Indy said with a nod. "I'm still trying to see if that's the case with myself."

He paused for a moment and looked over at the door that was marked "Special Collections."

"You know anything about that?" he said jabbing his thumb in the direction of the door.

"Not...particularly," Cal admitted after following the jap of Jones' thumb, and giving his head a light shake. "All I know if that you need special permission from a teacher to go there."

Even if he did have something he wanted to find there, Cal was the type that was too lazy to bother getting the permission, therefor deciding that whatever it was wasn't all that important in the long run.

"Huh."

Indy turned and looked at the door with curiosity. "I probably should find some general rules and instructions about this place."

"You could always go exploring," Cal offered, trying to say it with his usual deadpan, but found he couldn't help his smirk. Exploring around here, he imagined, only guaranteed a good story out of it, but nothing else at all.

"I usually like to know what I'm getting into first," Indy said with a small smirk. "Though there's something to be said for diving in head first."

"Did the old librarian leave any notes or anything?"

Cal hadn't known the old librarian, but it sounded like something librarians would do.

"Looks like there have been a few of them," Indy said with a shrug. "Not sure who left what at this point. I'm just going by what I've found in my desk drawer."

Cal gave a glance toward the office, before his gaze shifted to the Special Collections, and then finally back to Jones. He shook his head slightly.

"Good luck with that. He's to hoping you find out the easy way that that's where they keep the constantly hungry dragon, or something."

"Dragons."

Indy scratched his chin and shook his head. This place is going to take some getting used to.

"Yeah."

He shrugged and headed back to his office. "Grab me if you have any questions and maybe we can puzzle it out together. Or if anything attacks you."

Cal nodded. "Will do."

...yup. Still working on trying to get a handle on the computer. Cal was getting the feeling that he should have tackled some of this stuff earlier.

Buffy had meant to be here earlier, but she really had to take advantage of the fact that she had no classes on a Monday because that ruled. She walked in sort of like she owned the place, even if her entire reason for being here was to scout the place out, ownership be damned.

The door opening was a welcome distraction from that damned computer; the attitude of the girl who strode through it, however, earned an arch of his eyebrow when he glanced up and over to see if it was anyone who wanted anything.

She stopped short when she saw that someone was actually around. Right, this place didn't have a Giles. "Hi," she said with a nothing's-up-here smile. "I'm just, you know, looking around. Gotta love being the new kid."

"Enjoy it while you can," Cal offered with a slight smirk. "Because it's only good for a limited time, and then you lose your easy excuse for anything." Including, he felt based on yesterday, making conversations with people, but whatever. "I'm Cal, by the way. I'd offer to help, but I'm sort of a new kid with this whole library thing, so I don't know how good it would be. Yet."

"Buffy. Apparently one of the many previous Buffys," she said. "Are you new, too?"

"Buffy?" Cal asked, blinking as he remembered someone telling him about her, but he couldn't remember who. Still, a name like Buffy and the inherent, immediate associations it gave Cal was not easily forgotten. And, after giving Buffy another, closer look, he realized that...yup. She looked exactly like any other type of Buffy he'd known so far.

He shook his head. "Uh, hi, nice to meet you. And no, I'm not new. I started over the summer, but this is about one of the first times I've been in the library. It's a bit of a jump from rarely visiting to suddenly working here."

"Yeah, I bet," she said, and tried to add casually, "So you probably wouldn't know where the occult section is yet, right?"

"The occult section?" Well, that was very un-Buffy of her, and Cal frowned a little as the expected lines of all these girls supposedly being carbon copies of each other with the one radiant exception of the Obscure Object blurred. "Um, no. But I can tell you where the Greek philosophy and poetry are, and early 1970s American history."

What? He'd gotten curious as how the things he grew up with were being studied.

That didn't really help her, but she didn't want to be that weird girl who had to know where the occult section was, at least not on day three. "Good," she said quickly. "That would be good."

Maybe she could find it while wandering around.

"Greek stuff?" Cal pointed toward one area of the library. "That way. American history?" He moved his finger. "There. Occult? I'm gonna guess...maaybe..." He pointed to another spot and then circled his finger around a little to denote a rather large and general area, "over there."

He set down his hand. "I could draw you a map if you wanted."

"Oh, thanks, but I think I got it." If she had to wander, it was less weird when you didn't have a map in hand, after all. "Newbie rule, after all: no accepting maps from non-newbies. That way potentially leads to badness. I'm street smart. Or, you know, library smart... I'm gonna go looking now."

Cal snorted a little. Because venturing off on your own anywhere in Fandom was any safer than potential pranks. Even those woods weren't safe because he'd ran into Fanbutt there. Oh, newbies.

He certainly wasn't going to say anything, though. Last night and his own annoyance with constantly being told how weird this place was inspired him to keep his mouth shut. He gave Buffy a half-hearted little salute and said, "Good luck. If you need anything, just shout and we'll play Marco Polo 'til I find you."

"Got it, thanks," she said with a smile, and headed off in one of the directions he'd pointed.

And if she was examining the floor as she was wandered around, looking for possible evidence of a Hellmouth breach, well, who could blame her?

Cal ran down to the cafeteria to grab a bite and take a much needed break from the computer, so the library is open only to the librarian and other aides!

Refueled with food and armed with even more coffee, Cal wondered whether this whole library thing was a horrible idea, wanted to just crawl over to the gym and work out, but he was back at the computer for another try.

Cal was finishing off his day by wandering the shelves and trying to see if he could just figure out where to put the books. Quite a lot of them seemed to already be in the wrong spot, anyway, so he wondered if it even mattered.

This change in location had nothing to do with the fact that the computer was now making funny sounds.

Really...

I'm totally crashing, but I wanted to get this up before I did! Mmm, library. *hugs it*
