Basics of Alchemy - First Class - Period Five - Monday, 9/1

As per usual, Abby Irene leaned at the front of the class as her new students made their way into the room. She was pleased to see that she had a smaller collection of students than last semester as, of course, the class was somewhat more intensive.

As soon as they were all in their seats, she gave them a bow and moved from her spot at her desk to the middle of the front of the room.

"Good afternoon, class," she greeted them with a smile, "I'm glad to see some old faces and even more glad to see new ones. Let's get on with it, shall we?"

Andrew looked about the class, happy to see so many familiar faces. He resisted the urge to wave at some of them.

"Hello.

"For those of you who have taken a class with me before, you already know my name, but for the rest of you, it's Doctor Garrett. In my own world, I work as a Detective Crown Investigator, a forensic sorceress, but I am still a Doctor of Thaumaturgy with a concentration in lesser alchemy, and hence will I be teaching this class."

She smiled at them mischievously.

"Don't worry. I'm not too much trouble."

She moved to her desk, where she took up a sheaf of papers and passed them to the nearest student.

"This is your syllabus (http://brandyforapples.livejournal.com/5341.html), which should be rather standard. This course is neither a practical nor a theoretical; instead, we'll be doing a little bit of both as neither really works as well without the understanding of the other.

"For today, however, I'd like it if we could go around the room, state our names, where we're from, a little bit about why we took the course, and what work we might have already done in the field."

Cimorene stood up and automatically fixed her dress's skirt. "I'm Princess Cimorene of Linderwall from Linderwall which is near the Enchanted Forrest and nowhere near here. I'm interesting in magic of most sorts, and both my attempts at alchemy ended with explosions. I have not done much alchemy for those reasons, but I have made myself fire-proof."

"Very wise, I should think. Though I don't think we'll be doing anything so explosive in this class."

"My name is Tony Foster. I'm from Vancouver, Canada," he said. "Uh, on Earth. I'm here because I just started learning magic and I want to know more. Haven't done any alchemy, though."

"Well, you will probably find some of the information on materials found here to be very helpful, 'Tony'," she said with a smile, though it was obvious that she had only just barely kept herself from calling him Anthony.

"Just so you know, you are welcome to come to my office hours if you should require any further assistance related with this class or your other studies. I would much rather have a student in my office than elsewhere, getting himself into trouble."

She almost asked him to show his tattoo before realizing she was no longer in her world as she knew it and he almost certainly didn't have one.

"I'm Sam Winchester," he said, directing that more at the other students than her, "I'm from Kansas, and I'm taking this course because I took your class over the summer and enjoyed it, and alchemy is something I really only have a general knowledge of, more than any practical experience."

"Well, I'm certainly glad to have you back, and the invitation from last class stands."

She was glad to see him. He'd thought about her questions and more importantly, had asked some of his own. She liked that in a student.

Hinata was quietly glad that she'd gotten at least one instructor that was the same as last time.

"I a-am Hinata Hyuuga," she said, trying not to fidget nervously. "I a-am from Konohagakure, in t-the Fire Country, w-which is not on t-this world. I w-wouldn't say I k-know much about a-alchemy, but it s-sounded interesting."

"We will certainly have to do what we can to correct that," she said with a winning smile.

"I'm Harry Dresden, from kind of all over the country, I'm a wizard and figured alchemy goes along with the whole magic thing. Not sure if I've done anything that qualifies as alchemy or not."

Another one; she wondered how other worlds kept track of their magic users.

"I'm Seregil i Korit Solun Meringill Bokthersa," Seregil said with a quirk of a smile. "And yes, I'm aware that's quite a mouthful. I'm most recently from Rhiminee in Skala. I know some theories of alchemy but haven't really had all that much chance to put them into practice."

He stood up and waved to the class. "Hi! My name's Andrew Wells. I'm from Sunnydale, California. I've actually done a lot of reading on alchemy, so I thought it would be fun to take this class. And I'm in the market for a new hobby." He nodded and took his seat.

"I'm Savannah Levine. I'm from a few places, and I'm a witch who does spells and magic. I'm taking the course because I enjoyed having you for a teacher during summer session and I'm curious as to what else I can learn."

"If anyone needs me for anything, or should like to be my teaching assistant for the semester, please do come speak to me after class. I'll be right here at the desk."

And so she was.
