Basics of Alchemy - First Class - Period Five - Monday, 9/1

As per usual, Abby Irene leaned at the front of the class as her new students made their way into the room. She was pleased to see that she had a smaller collection of students than last semester as, of course, the class was somewhat more intensive.

As soon as they were all in their seats, she gave them a bow and moved from her spot at her desk to the middle of the front of the room.

"Good afternoon, class," she greeted them with a smile, "I'm glad to see some old faces and even more glad to see new ones. Let's get on with it, shall we?"

"If anyone needs me for anything, or should like to be my teaching assistant for the semester, please do come speak to me after class. I'll be right here at the desk."

And so she was.

Sam waited until after class to approach the desk.

She looked up with a smile.

"Yes, Sam? How may I help you?"

"I was actually wondering if I could help you," he said. "Do you still need an assistant?"

"I do indeed," she admitted, pleased. "And if you're interested in the position, it's yours."

She liked Sam. He'd shown an interest, which was just as good as a base of knowledge when it came right down to it. Someone who knows might not care, but someone who cares will make sure he knows.

Sam practically beamed as he nodded. "I'm very interested. Thank you."

She stood and offered her hand.

"I'm glad, then. Can you be at the classroom a half an hour before class time to help me set things up?"

Savannah went up to Abby Irene's desk after class was over.

"Here to help me again?" she asked with a genuine smile.

Savannah smiled and nodded. "If you'll have me."

She considered for a moment.

"The class is smaller," she said thoughtfully, "but we will also be doing practical work and the more eyes on that, the better."

She nodded.

"Yes, I think I will take you on, if you don't mind."

"I don't mind at all. Thank you, ma'am."

"Very good. I'll need you a few minutes before classtime to set things up properly. Will that be a problem?"

"That won't be a problem at all, ma'am."

"I'm glad to hear it. I'll see you on Monday, then, or you're welcome to come by Friday during my office hours."

Savannah beamed. "I'll see you then, ma'am."
