The Danger Room simulation had changed again. Instead of the posh surroundings of Club Mystique or the imposing theater, this week's class was in a club that was a little rough around the edges. There really wasn't a stage, just an open area with a jukebox and microphone stand.

"This week, we're going to be covering country music," said Mike. "These days, country isn't an entirely distinct music genre as many artists start crossing over. There's an honesty about country music that appeals to people once they've overdosed on bubblegum pop. The best way to know if you're playing to a crowd that prefers country? Your audience will look like regular people, not fancy clubgoers. The club probably won't have all the fancy trimmings. No DJ, no VIP area, no fancy drinks."

After they were all done with their songs, Mike had one more order of business. "Next week is our final workshop, so be prepared to sing in front of a live audience! Go ahead and invite your friends, too. The more, the merrier."

"Afternoon, guys," Aly said, smiling at the class as they came in.  "Glad to see you all survived the volcano that decided to explode off our shores."   She waited until everyone was seated then began.  "So today's our second to last class.  We've talked about basic guidelines for blending in, disguises, putting together a background, and we've had a trial run.  Next week we're going to take a trial run in the real world, but today, we have an important concept to discuss."

She waited for a moment then grinned.  "So how do you know when to get the heck out of town?  When is it time to salvage the mission and when is it time to screw it and get out of Dodge?"

"It's not something I can answer for you.  It's something that everyone needs to answer for him or herself.  So...I present the question to you.  When you're trying to blend in, when should you cut and run and when should you try to muscle your way through?  The floor is open to opinions, questions, and answers."

Everyone in the class had received notice asking them to come to class in formal dress.  If they didn't have formal dress, some would be provided.

And it was.   The group met in the Danger Shop where there were several racks of formal ball gowns, tuxedos, and accessories in all sizes for those who didn't come dressed up.

Aly was waiting in a ball gown by a table of...weapons.  Throwing knives, very small guns, hair pins that were also stilettos, every type of moddable concealable weapon you could think of as well as the holsters and purses and accoutrements to carry them with a formal outfit.

She grinned up at the class.  "Today we're looking more at the defence end of the spectrum.  When you're wearing clothes suitable for a ball, you have to think a bit harder about how you might conceal weapons on your person.  Sometimes it's easy, a small pistol in your purse or stiletto hair pins in your hair, throwing knives under the sleeves of your dress shirt.  Sometimes it's a bit harder - I have all my dresses specially made so I can carry knives under them if necessary as well as providing enough freedom of movement to fight."

"So what I want you to do is to figure out how you can carry three weapons while wearing your formal wear.  Subtly.  Once you do that, try dancing a bit with a partner, see if you can tell where the other person's weapons are, and figure out how you'd draw yours if necessary.  Those of you without a lot of weapons experience?  Don't worry.  It's the Danger Shop, nothing's going to hurt you here.  But in reality, you may not want to slip an unsheathed knife down your bodice or something like that."

One nice thing about working in the library, was that it gave Anemone the chance to do research.  Like, say, find out where this Maddy-nascar place was.

Ignore any random musings about creating a lemur army, the library is actually open.

"Good morning!"

Jim was exceptionally chipper this morning. Whether or not this was a good thing was up to the beholder, really. Cut for Jim. )

He thwacked the blackboard with a ruler. "I wish you good luck."

The first thing the class would probably notice this week was that it was not Lady Ghanima in front of them. Lady Ghanima was seated in the back of the class, observing, while one of her two TAs was standing in her customary spot.

Alice laced her fingers together behind her back and willed herself not to fidget as the class filed in. When everyone was seated, she began to speak.

"This is a story of four queens," she said. "All very dissimilar in temperament and logic. The four ruled, together, over one land, until the day they warred among themselves for power. Choosing a side was not a simple issue, for the populace."

Hearts, White, Red, and Alice )

She was nearly finished, now. "The populace then had to choose: a ruthless leader, but one who had kept the land safe and functional for many years, or a young revolutionary, who may fall prey to the same madness that had destroyed her once before. How does one choose?"
