How to Look like You Belong: Period 3, Week 5

"Afternoon, guys," Aly said, smiling at the class as they came in.  "Glad to see you all survived the volcano that decided to explode off our shores."   She waited until everyone was seated then began.  "So today's our second to last class.  We've talked about basic guidelines for blending in, disguises, putting together a background, and we've had a trial run.  Next week we're going to take a trial run in the real world, but today, we have an important concept to discuss."

She waited for a moment then grinned.  "So how do you know when to get the heck out of town?  When is it time to salvage the mission and when is it time to screw it and get out of Dodge?"

"It's not something I can answer for you.  It's something that everyone needs to answer for him or herself.  So...I present the question to you.  When you're trying to blend in, when should you cut and run and when should you try to muscle your way through?  The floor is open to opinions, questions, and answers."

[OOC: Please to be waiting for the OCD is up!]

Romeo listened thoughtfully. He hadn't really considered what he would do if his cover failed.

Michael was listening. He didn't know about the concept of mindwarping yet, which was probably a good thing.

Hinata listened carefully, though she wasn't taking notes today.

Jen was scowling thoughtfully throughout the lecture; all of these things were much more subtle than she was used to, but when you lived in a world where people were amazingly oblivious to things like 50-story robots fighting in the streets on a regular basis, you didn't need that much subtlety . . .

Considering the call (http://dojima-hime.livejournal.com/6948.html#cutid1) she'd gotten earlier, this was startling apt, and Yurika slouched down in her seat slightly as she took notes. The universe was against her today, clearly.

Wes listens carefully. Retreating wasn't ever really an option as far as his father was concerned. Then again, his father's battles were fought in corporate boardrooms and he had the kind of money and influence that made sure it was always the *other* side that would retreat.

Jen's watching Wes out of the corner of her eye, as she usually does.

Liir had considered this thoroughly, mostly because he usually thought he'd screw up.

But now he considered it tactically.

Jack tried to listen carefully, but the paper was really tasty.

Alex was a big fan of muscling his way through. It had worked so far, as far as he could tell.

"It d-depends on the mission," Hinata said honestly. "It d-depends on whether the m-mission is more i-important than your life or y-your cover. Y-You can't j-just say one a-answer for everything."

"I think that unless your life is on the line, you should keep trying to bluff until all hope is gone," Romeo decided. "If you get thrown out, at least you'll know you did all you could."

"I should think it would depend on the nature of your mission as well as the odds," he said.

"If you're seeking information, such as the location of someone or something, muscling through will only cause more trouble as the item or person will leave that spot upon being discovered.

"If you're attempting an assassination or somesuch, I should think it would depend on the remaining obstacles as well as your current status.

"Things like that."

"What are you after, and what are the stakes?" Dōjima asked. "Depending on your goal, you can't serve your mission if you're dead. Sometimes it's just best to cut your losses."

"It's not really something you can decide ahead of time," Seregil said. "It all depends on the situation, how badly you've misstepped, what you are after, its importance, how much time you have to get it, the availability of other options..." He shrugged. "Far too many variables to make one sweeping answer."

"I think you should cut and run as soon as you get that screaming feeling in you that oh crap, they definitely know who I am. The difference is if your mission is of the extremely vital, needs to be done as soon as possible variety or if it's something that you can pull back from and someone else can go in and do. Because if it's urgent and immediate, all you can do is get out, try and find a quick different look, and go back in."

"I think I would try to finish the mission as much as I was able, and try to brazen it out," Inara said, after some consideration. "Sometimes all it takes it making a new lie believable."

Zuko was there and if you asked him you cut your losses when there wasn't a chance of winning.

I saw Iron Man on Friday with a friend. Leslie Bibb is in it.

There was much giggling by me every time she was onscreen.
