Students had been handwave alerted to the fact that the class would be held in the Danger Shop today, and so V was waiting for them when they all filed in.

"Good morning," V said as the simulation immediately placed them in the spacious, white lobby of a building. "Today, we'll be doing a tactical simulation. You and the partner you chose last week have a mission: to find the control room at the top of the tower. In it, there is a ticking device, which will have quite an impact on the entire city if you don't stop it. And no, the lifts aren't working. Your mission, young ones, is to make your way to the control room while dodging guards and personnel, and disengage the device using only your available resources, and to do so by the end of the period."

He tilted his head. "And for now, that means wits and no weapons, though you all do get maps of the building. Oh, and a final thing. The building is not empty. This is a business. The civilians haven't any idea what's going on, though, and you mustn't panic them. You may, however, ask them for assistance in such a way as to not alert them to the situation."

V clapped his hands once, and then retreated to fully start the simulation. He didn't want to be in it, if old friends showed up.

Lorne is sitting back in his usual spot as the students enter the room.

"Afternoon Kittens! I hope you remembered your assignment this week! Now why don't you head to the stage and show us what you got."

Coffee, donuts and juice were set on a table at the front of the class, and Elliot handed out the lab as the students walked in.

"Hey, guys. Today we're going to learn about blood types, which is kind of like DNA but with training wheels on, in that they used to be used for identification back in the dark ages before we had DNA testing. Or, you know, 15 years ago.

"In the human population, there are four major blood types -- O, A, B and AB, and then each can be Rh-negative or Rh positive. In a typical human population, roughly a third each will be A positive and O positive, and the other six groups will split the final third."

Elliot continued with her lecture, explaining antigens, transfusions, and other factors relating to blood type.

"Two activities today, one serious -- well, graded, anyhow -- and one completely goofy. First, I want you to pair up and do one of the activities in your lab handouts. It's your choice whether you do the one with the baby or the one with the murder.

Second, if you have time I want you to look at this handout about the Japanese blood type theory of personality and see how it applies to yourself. There's a test on the bench that will let you type your own blood if you don't know. Like, I'm AB, which makes me, 'Cool, controlled, rational. Sociable and popular. Empathic.' Huh.

"That's it for today, so please get to work."

There was the usual plate of fruits and cheeses with tea and cider on offering as well. Wilson was sitting up on the desk, nibbling some cheese and watching as the students filed in.

“Good afternoon.” He started out cheerfully as they all settled into their seats. Reaching for a stack of blue books, he hopped down off the desk and walked up to the seats, handing out the books.

Each student got two books and then Wilson headed back down to the chalkboard where he began to write as he spoke.

"Thank you all, by the way, for a very enjoyable field trip. I was quite thrilled not to have to bail anyone out of jail, the hospital or hotel security. Now, to get to the purpose of this field trip..."

Up on the chalkboard, Wilson wrote...

This weekend, you were given the opportunity to observe a professional entertainment act with comedic tones as well as illusion. Today, using any notes you took during the act or your own recollections I want you to write up your thoughts about what you saw.

In this write up I want you to reference one of the following types of humor and explain how the act exemplified this form of humor.

The Fool’s Humor
Various Types of Humor
Senses of Humor

Also, I want you to detail out the reactions you observed in the audience in response to the show.

Moving away from the chalk board, he brushed his hands off and smiled to the class.

“Individual work please, you have the whole class period in which to finish and turn it in. This will count as a project percentage to your grade.”

At some point while they were working, Wilson added more writing to a free spot on the chalk board.

Homework:

Work on your projects for the end of the semester. You should be about 2/3rds completed at this point. Remember, the final project is worth 20% of your grade in this course. 0’s are brutal.

Aly was looking very, very amused as the class came in.  For those following the home game, that and the fact that there were still piles of clothing, costumes, and makeup in the back might be a reason to be worried.

"Good morning all," she said with a smile as they sat down.  "Last week we discussed disguises, and all of you put one together.  This week, we're going to talk about what makes your disguise believable - your cover story."  She grinned.  "Yes, normally you do this the other way around.  This way is more fun.  What you're going to do today is make up a cover story - a legend in the technical term - to fit the disguise you devised last week."

"Very well then.  You have two tasks for today.  The first is to develop a cover based on the disguise you came up with last week.  I don't expect anything too elaborate, but I want to know what you're thinking about.  The second is a homework assignment.  Next class, I like you all to hand in a paper detailing a cover that you could use.  You can feel free to make the situation you're going undercover in, but I want the situation detailed, the cover, how you're taking what we discussed today in class into account, and the disguise you'd use.  At least three pages, I'd think."

She looked around.  "Any questions?"

[OOC: I don't know how much I'm going to be around as I still have a killer migraine, but I'll tag Aly in as much as possible.  Credit again to the Handbook of Practical Spying for helping put together the lesson.  OCD is up]

The desks have been cleared to the walls in the classroom today, and Daisy leaned against the chalkboard, holding a blunt rapier.

No, she won't cut you with it. Yet )

"Okay, that's the very basics of unarmed stage combat. We're not working with weapons today, we'll save that for next week. Take a look at some of the techniques described here, and then slowly and carefully try them out. Anyone who gets injured gets a failing grade for the day, along with their partner."

Peter was looking perhaps a bit under the weather, but he was in the salle and setting up at 5pm because wild horses couldn't have prevented it.  He nodded at the other students.  "Good afternoon, all.  I don't actually have much to say so go to it.  Pair up or not, and so make sure to stretch out first."
[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com
Evie was carefully:

1) Taking pictures
2) Affixing index cards with paperclips and teeny bits of string
3) Roping off areas to be explored next
4) Putting up lights
5) Waiting for other people.

There was an open box of donuts and one of croissants next to the coffee thermos at the entrance to the big chamber where the Albatross had been wrecked.

The classroom was sadly lacking fictional characters today. Thursday was there though. "My son has seen fit to pass on his cold to me, so don't get too close today unless you want a sudden abundance of mucus. If I've done my job right so far, I'm sure your imaginations kicked in and you had a rather unpleasant mental image just now.

On a completely unrelated note, today's class is on the detective novel. There are nuances to the genre, which I'm sure you can pick up on by reading any decent detective novel. The Maltese Falcon was on the reading list, but I also recommend A Study in Scarlet for a general feel of the detective genre and any of the Perkins and Snell series for your typical hard-boiled noir detectives.

Detective fiction is an intellectual game. It's sport for the mind. The struggle is between the author and the reader. Can the author outsmart the reader? Can the reader unravel the mystery? If both fulfil their roles correctly, the answer is yes. What you should take away from this class today is an understanding that detective novels require two important things - an engaging lead detective and a mystery that readers can struggle with."

Thursday passed around two handouts. "The first is a blank dossier. You have the opportunity to create your own detective. The second has a mystery for you to solve. Feel free to give it a shot."
