Balancing his coffee and a blueberry muffin precariously on one arm, Bridge opens up the library and settles in behind the desk with his mp3 player.

The plasma screen in the computer lab is on and showing an episode of Galaxy Quest when the students enter. Abby waves from where she's eating popcorn and watching.

"Good morning! Today we're going to work on finding video's and music on the web." She launched into a description of Youtube, Google Video and iTunes.

"Those are the legal ways to view or get movies. The illegal ones are a lot more fun." Abby grinned. "There are communities and message boards set up where people offer up songs or videos to share. Or you can download a torrent for whatever you're looking for."

"Today you're going to be downloading peer to peer filesharing programs. My personal favorite is Limewire, but you're free to find one of your own. I want to see some illegal downloads before this class is over!"

Week 7 -- October 18: Jupiter, king of the planets

Syllabus | Class Roster

Handouts:
Starmaps: North | South | East | West | Overhead

Today's music? Holst's Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity.

"Good afternoon," Ellie greeted the class. "I hope those of you who went enjoyed Ms. Frizzle's trip. I certainly did. Today we're going to talk about Jupiter. Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and the largest within the solar system. It is usually the fourth brightest object in the sky (after the Sun, the Moon and Venus); however at times Mars appears brighter than Jupiter.

''Jupiter is 2.5 times more massive than all the other planets combined.'' )

"Today we're supposed to talk about campaign finance," Josh said. "Which as a teacher I should probably tell you is fascinating and important."

He took a gulp from his coffee mug. "But it's actually tedious and painful and that's what you hire campaign lawyers for because the campaign finance laws make tax laws look like they were carefully thought out to be easily understood."

He grinned. "Someone who wears a lot of tweed and tends not to come out during the daytime has spent his entire life learning how to drive a truck full of money through the loopholes in the last campaign finance reform bill. Find him. Pay him whatever he's asking for. It's worth it."

He walked over to the blackboard and wrote "MONEY" in giant letter. "Because without cash, you have no campaign. And we could get into a discussion about how terrible it is that it costs an average of a million dollars to run a successful House race and bemoan the growing influence of special interest groups but frankly we'll just go around in circles getting frustrated and it's entirely too early in the day for that kind of a discussion."

He leaned against a desk. "And no candidate enjoys asking for money. It's their least favorite thing to do. They'll bitch and moan and whine and generally act like petulant toddlers. Today, I want you to come up with three ways to get the candidates to make those phone calls."

Josh pointed at Marty. "How many more days of terrible political ads do we have to go before the election?" he asked.

Josh was on his cell phone when the government students began arriving. "Ron? Where are you?"

A pause.

"Okay, I should've told you about that bookstore. Sorry."

A longer pause.

"Third door on the right."

A tall man with a serious expression on his face and a buzz cut poked his head into the classroom, glanced around and then walked to the back of the room.

He had an earpiece and a dark suit. Anyone who had ever watched the news could probably guess who was going to come in after him.

Josh bounced to his feet, grinning. "Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States."

A distinguished looking man with a warm smile came into the classroom and shook Josh's hand, clearly thrilled to see him. They exchanged pleasantries before he turned towards the students.

"My name is Jed Bartlet," he said, "and I'm the President of the United States back where Josh comes from. Someone else is apparently President in this dimension?" Josh nodded, looking a bit pained and Jed paused for a moment, clearly mulling that concept over. "I understand that you are learning about the Executive Branch. Josh decided to call in a favor and get me to guest lecture."

He sat down at Josh's desk and smiled. "I'm here to answer any questions you might have about the historical powers of the presidency or my experiences with the job in particular." He looked around the room. "Don't be shy."

When the students come in they saw a number of items laid out at the front of the room. Those who had some experience with such things would recognise a portable electrical crucible, as well as clamps and molds and what looks like some bars of silver. There were also several handouts for them to take laid out beside the sign in sheet.

"Today," John began where everyone was seated, "we're going to be moving away from ghosts and haunted objects into more solid supernatural things.Specifically, today we're going to be looking at shapeshifters. )

[ooc: wait for the ocd's are up! Have at it. Sorry this is up so late, my connection was just not behaving last night.]

"Tonight we're going to look at the Crab Nebula. The Crab Nebula (also known as M1) is a supernova remnant in the constellation of Taurus. The nebula was first observed in 1731 by John Bevis. It is the remnant of a supernova that was recorded by Chinese and Arab astronomers in 1054. Located at a distance of about 6,300 light years (2 kpc) from Earth, the nebula has a diameter of 11 ly (3.4 pc) and is expanding at a rate of about 1,500 kilometres per second. The nebula contains a pulsar in its centre which rotates thirty times per second, emitting pulses of radiation from gamma rays to radio waves. The nebula was the first astronomical object identified with a historical supernova exposion.

"We're also going to take a look at Vega." Ellie's voice grew wistful. "Vega is the brightest star in the constellation Lyra, and the fifth brightest star in the sky. It is the second brightest star in the Northern night sky, after Arcturus. In 1850 it became the first star to be photographed, and in 1872 the first to have its spectrum photographed. It also became the first star to have a car named after it, when Chevrolet launched the 'Vega' in 1971.

"Let me know if there's anything else you'd like to see tonight!"

Today, the class tables were set up in the middle of a courtyard arena in a Roman palace. Janice's presence might not have been immediately evident to everyone, but anyone following the scent of cigar smoke would find her looking down at the class from the vantage point of the Imperial balcony.

"Ave, Caesar!" she called out from the balcony in (she flattered herself) her most stentorian tones. 'Welcome to Rome.' )

[OOC: Class Info Post. Same as last week, I'm still stuck on the crap computer at work and pretty much out of commission, hence the pie fight, or there really would've been a Roman Q&A . . . but I found out today that I am slated to get a shiny new Athlon X4 dual-core processor machine, hopefully soon. OCD up, up, and away!]

Vader stomped into the classroom, slamming the door so hard behind him that it cracked across the middle.

"Today I will give you your midterm assignment," he snapped, cloak swirling around him as he paced. "The master-apprentice system of education has long been traditional in my galaxy. The Jedi used it--" his tone was laced with scorn as his helmet swiveled towards Rory, "and my own Sith still use it. We will be following in the Sith tradition."

He pulled a piece of paper from his desk. "I have paired you up into master and apprentice teams. Throughout the coming week, you will work together. Masters, your goal is to train your apprentices to a level of usefulness in a skill of your choice. Apprentices, your goal is to become better than your master at that skill and ultimately become the master. You must provide a united front to the rest of the world while seeking to undermine each other at every turn. Next class you will report to me about the weaknesses and strengths of your partner and how you would hypothetically use them to gain the upper hand in your relationship."

And if Vader sounded a bit bitter about this particular arrangement, well, he was.

"I have heard about the master-slave exercise in the previous Ethics class," he growled, voice heavy with menace. "This is a completely different concept and anyone who tries to turn this into non-hypothetical exploitation will be answering to me personally. You will be wishing for detention when I am finished with you." He made sure to look at every student as he said that. There would be no misinterpretation of his intentions in this.

He turned his attention to the paper in his gloved right hand. "Listen for your names. I will only be saying them once."

At the end of class, he looked around the room again. "I will be holding office hours on Saturday and Sunday if any of your visitors choose to speak with me and hear how inadequate I find all of you." His helmet swiveled towards Rory again. "Other than that, do not bother me."
