Speech Comm

201--2nd period

Ok, by now you should have your idea. I want 100 words. That's it. Sum it up. If you can be that precise, you won't have any trouble with the actual speech.

*** *** *** *** ***

301--3rd period

So we have fish and cats and dogs and bunnies and lemurs and all manner of animal companions. Is it human nature or social conditioning...or is it some kind of mental illness, that makes us talk to beings that can't communicate back?

She's in her office 4th period on, tearing through books and videos and loading the good stuff into a box. Several times she can't help but laugh out loud. God, he's going to really hate me. Oh, yeah. There's going to be payback for this.

She's expecting a student, but anyone is welcome.

The announcements are actually slightly closer to on time this morning, if "after second period" counts.

"Good morning. The school administration would like to officially announce that all current students have the option of enrolling in one or both summer terms; further information will be forthcoming, as will information on how to sign up."

In the background, Alpha 5 seems to be attempting -- attempting -- to rehearse playing reveille on a bugle. It's not pleasant, to be as charitable as possible.

"In addition, all students and faculty should proceed with caution this week. We have received reports of random slime attacks occurring in the hallways of both the school building and the dorm. Attempts to determine the actual source of the slime have proved inconclusive, however. Thank you, and please bear in mind that you can't do that on television."

Angela made it to the library early. Too early, in her opinion, but it always was.

She decided to spend the day doing some of that "work" stuff.

The library was open.

Dream sat calmly behind his desk, waiting for students. When the classes arrived, he addressed them.

"You have a relatively calm day today, though not one without work. Foreign literature students, please select and read a story from the thousand and one nights, also known as the works of Scheherazade. We will discuss the stories you selected on Thursday. Classics students, you should still be working on your translations of works from Ovid's Metamorphoses.

I am here, should you have questions."

"Today we talk about field organizing," Josh said to the class. "You might've noticed that running a campaign looks a lot like sending an army into battle--and if you haven't noticed, please, please pay more attention--and field organizing is the 'boots on the ground' portion of your strategy."

He smiled. "This group marches on its stomach, too--pizza, sandwiches, coffee. Make sure you have lots of it. This is where you use your volunteers. Field organizing covers phone banks and door-to-door campaigning. For Democrats especially, this is where we have to do most of our campaigning because as hard as we fundraise, the Republicans are generally going to have more money. If you organize your volunteers and target your undecideds correctly, you can outthink your opponents. The South Dakota 2002 Senate race is a brilliant example of that--the Democrat there had field offices spread across the state and managed to contact every single voter at least five times before Election Day. There was a report that a volunteer was knocking on a door at the same time another volunteer was calling from the phone bank."

Josh grinned. "That, my friends, is saturation. So today I want you to make up a number come up with a rough idea of how many volunteers you think you'll need, with more for the weeks leading up to Election Day, of course. Will you pay them? Will you bring them in from out-of-state? Will you use a set of cunning robots? Whatever."

He sat down and put his hands behind his head. "As always, ask questions. Never be afraid to say 'I don't know.'"

A vat of green slime poured from the ceiling onto Josh's head.

"What. The. Hell?"

"Um, hi," Rory said a bit nervously. "Professor Tick is out sick, so we're just going to watch some more movies and do a reading from our awesome textbooks, okay?"

She stuck a DVD into the player, and smiled as the Looney Tunes music filled the room.

She turned to face everyone quickly. "Oh, and this week's metaphor is, um, capes and your extra credit is to tell me how a weetiny bunny could aid someone's work for Justice."

"Change of plans," Rita said without looking up from her paper. "Your projects will be due the third of May. I want your interview subjects and any information on where you might be going on my desk no later than a week from today."

She turned a page. "So, work on those things today. Think about questions. Basically, stay quiet."

There's a TV set up at the front of the class and if anyone heard Camulus humming when they came in they are obviously completely out of their heads. He isn't humming. Nope. When the class had assembled, Camulus announced, "Today we'll be watching a film that incorporates many aspects of different Arthurian traditions and introduces some new elements into the story line. While watching the film, pay attention and take note of those aspects of the legend already familiar to us, and how some of these new elements could have evolved from older stories. We'll finish watching the film next class and discuss it."

He turns off the lights and sets the film to play. A 1950s-style ad for toothpaste begins, before a voice offscreen grumbles about it being the wrong movie and switches reels. Title credits began to roll, conveniently subtitled in Swedish.

"Progress reports," Lorelai said once the students were seated. "Let me know what you've found so far while doing research for your final project."

HR Management - Period Six

"What have you guys come up with so far?" Lorelai asked after everyone entered.

"Good morning, class. I hope you all enjoyed the extra week. Let's talk about Belloc and Holmes, okay?"

"Hillaire Belloc (1870-1953) was a devout Roman Catholic famous for saying 'Europe is the faith, and the faith is Europe.' His strong beliefs are reflected in his writings. I deliberately chose some of his more humorous works, because I wanted to talk about intent. Belloc obviously intends to amuse here, but he also intends to educate on a grotesque level. Occasionally the morals are obscured -- Henry King dies of eating string, but with the lesson that food is the only thing to put in your body. This could be taken as a strongly anti-drug message. Note that Rebecca, who's only crime is slamming doors, is killed by the bust of Abraham, who nearly sacrificed his own child in the Bible."

"Holmes, on the other hand, uses strong imagery to uplift and uphold, rather than condemn. Old Ironsides famously saved the Civil War-era ship from the scrapyard. In Contentment, he extolls the joys of a simple life, showing his willingness to live the virtues he believes in. One can feel the yearning for nothing more than 3 meals, a home, and 50-score books. Every man has his place of excess, I suppose, and I can't argue with that one."

"Your assignment for this week is to write a poem using heavy imagery that either upholds a virtue or tears down a sin. You may emulate the styles of either writer, or you may branch out, but please write at least 10 lines."

"Also, don't forget that your final project is due April 25th. Either a Shakespearan sonnet or a sestina."

"I hope you all enjoyed the game from last lesson, and that you learnt something from it," Daniel said.

"Today, I want to talk about Ancient Egyptian scripts. I'm sure you've all heard of hieroglyphs, but traditionally Egyptologists divided hieroglyphs into three types based on appearance: hieroglyphic, hieratic, and demotic.

What do you guys know about any of these three scripts?"

Broots is doing his best not to yawn too frequently today. "Okay guys, if you owe me make-up work, today is the last day to turn it in. Also, Intermediate? I want your proposals today. You have until the end of class if you need the extra time.

Beginners, today you get to measure stuff. Take a piece of string, get a circular object, and use the string to measure the circumference of the object. Then, take a ruler and measure the diameter of said object. Divide the circumference by the diameter and you should get an interesting number. Do this for about five objects, then use the computers in the back to see how close your estimate was.

Intermediate, you guys have five problems today.
Problems )

Have at it. Don't fall asleep."
