Mathematics: All Classes: Wednesday 4.12.06 Period 1

Broots is doing his best not to yawn too frequently today. "Okay guys, if you owe me make-up work, today is the last day to turn it in. Also, Intermediate? I want your proposals today. You have until the end of class if you need the extra time.

Beginners, today you get to measure stuff. Take a piece of string, get a circular object, and use the string to measure the circumference of the object. Then, take a ruler and measure the diameter of said object. Divide the circumference by the diameter and you should get an interesting number. Do this for about five objects, then use the computers in the back to see how close your estimate was.

Intermediate, you guys have five problems today.

1. A student at Fandom High decided to become his own employer by using his car as a taxi for the summer. It costs the student $693.00 to insure his car for the 4 months of summer. He spends $452.00 per month on gas. If he lives at home and has no other expenses for the 4 months of summer and charges an average of $7.00 per fare, how many fares will he have to get to be able to pay his tuition of $3280.00? Is this physically possible?

2. If twenty people at school write 43 pages in [(3)^.5] / 2 hours, then how many pages do they write in an eight hour day?

3. Parker went to Toronto to see a Blue Jays game. He had $650.00 for the trip. It cost him $40.00 for his ticket to the game, $216.00 to stay 2 nights at a hotel, $329.00 for his flight and $29.00 for food. He met a man on Young Street who was running a small casino. Parker bet $5.00 in Black Jack and won an amount of money that was triple what he had left after making the bet. He spent half of this at the ball game. How much money did Parker take home?

4. Walter was driving on the highway. A car ahead of him was driving far below the speed limit so he decided to pass. In the first second he gained 5m on the car and as he accelerated he gained 1.5 times as much distance in each second as he had the second before. If there was 30m between Walter and the car he was passing, then how long did it take him to pass?

5. Angela and Rory agree to go on a road trip together. They travel (x + 5)km on the first day. On the second day they travel 2km more than half of the distance they travelled on the first day. On the third day they drove 3 times as far as they did on the second day. If they drove 5000km total, find the value of x.

Have at it. Don't fall asleep."

He signs in but his writing is definitely more than a bit wonky.

John devours the smorgasboard. And then has something to eat.

Just to be difficult, Kiki's first object is her pen. Not surprisingly, she comes out with a number of 3.67. She then tries a coffee cup, a chair leg, the plate the cookies were on, and a water bottle, and calculates values of 3.31, 3.45, 3.18, and 3.24. Some are actually close to pi!

Molly waited for Cam to show up before starting on the assignment.

Taking a seat, he looked around the room for a moment. His attention definitely settled on the green kid for a moment before he looked further around the room. The girl without hat looked familiar and he remembered the picture he had found yesterday and gave her a small nod.

Pippi doesn't bother to measure anything.

"Pie!" she tells Broots smartly.

Pip gets up and excuses himself to the bathroom. When he comes back, he has the measurements of his eye-patch. He also measures a doughnut.

For number two? That would be 397 pages. Not shoes. Hi copy-and-paste without looking!
