Mathematics: All Classes: Wednesday 4.12.06 Period 1

Broots is doing his best not to yawn too frequently today. "Okay guys, if you owe me make-up work, today is the last day to turn it in. Also, Intermediate? I want your proposals today. You have until the end of class if you need the extra time.

Beginners, today you get to measure stuff. Take a piece of string, get a circular object, and use the string to measure the circumference of the object. Then, take a ruler and measure the diameter of said object. Divide the circumference by the diameter and you should get an interesting number. Do this for about five objects, then use the computers in the back to see how close your estimate was.

Intermediate, you guys have five problems today.

1. A student at Fandom High decided to become his own employer by using his car as a taxi for the summer. It costs the student $693.00 to insure his car for the 4 months of summer. He spends $452.00 per month on gas. If he lives at home and has no other expenses for the 4 months of summer and charges an average of $7.00 per fare, how many fares will he have to get to be able to pay his tuition of $3280.00? Is this physically possible?

2. If twenty people at school write 43 pages in [(3)^.5] / 2 hours, then how many pages do they write in an eight hour day?

3. Parker went to Toronto to see a Blue Jays game. He had $650.00 for the trip. It cost him $40.00 for his ticket to the game, $216.00 to stay 2 nights at a hotel, $329.00 for his flight and $29.00 for food. He met a man on Young Street who was running a small casino. Parker bet $5.00 in Black Jack and won an amount of money that was triple what he had left after making the bet. He spent half of this at the ball game. How much money did Parker take home?

4. Walter was driving on the highway. A car ahead of him was driving far below the speed limit so he decided to pass. In the first second he gained 5m on the car and as he accelerated he gained 1.5 times as much distance in each second as he had the second before. If there was 30m between Walter and the car he was passing, then how long did it take him to pass?

5. Angela and Rory agree to go on a road trip together. They travel (x + 5)km on the first day. On the second day they travel 2km more than half of the distance they travelled on the first day. On the third day they drove 3 times as far as they did on the second day. If they drove 5000km total, find the value of x.

Have at it. Don't fall asleep."

Victor walked around the room and measured a soda can, a wastebasket, a paper plate, a glue stick, and the fire extinguisher.

Victor snached the lollypop out of the air with his tongue. "Thanks, Broots!"

Just to be difficult, Kiki's first object is her pen. Not surprisingly, she comes out with a number of 3.67. She then tries a coffee cup, a chair leg, the plate the cookies were on, and a water bottle, and calculates values of 3.31, 3.45, 3.18, and 3.24. Some are actually close to pi!

Coughing a little, Kiki caught it with a grin and immediately measured the circumference and diameter before she opened it and popped it in her mouth. Hopefully, it might do something about her scratchy throat.

Molly waited for Cam to show up before starting on the assignment.

Taking a seat, he looked around the room for a moment. His attention definitely settled on the green kid for a moment before he looked further around the room. The girl without hat looked familiar and he remembered the picture he had found yesterday and gave her a small nod.

Molly gave Cam a very perplexed look when he didn't sit next to her. Her confusion only deepened at receiving just a small nod in greeting from him.

She waited until Broots was done giving everybody their assignments before moving over to sit by Cam. "Morning, Cam. Is everything okay?" she asked.

"Everything is well, Molly," he assured her, putting emphasis on her name. "How does this day find you?"

Re: Beginners

Something was wrong.

Molly put a hand to her hair to draw attention to the hatlessness. "My head is a little cold, but I should get used to that," she joked while watching him carefully.

He frowned and looked up at her hair. "Perhaps a hat would be in order?"

Molly just blinked at him for a moment.

Finally, she gave him a weak chuckle. "Yeah, I'll have to try and remember to buy one," she said.

"Perhaps I can be of assistance," he supplied helpfully. "One of my peers in class yesterday seemed to own a rather fetching hat. He might know where to procure more."

Re: Beginners

Molly looked at him in confusion again.

She was still getting a strong sense of... wrongness. This whole conversation was like she wasn't even speaking to Cam. She thought about what she had heard on the radio about John and wondered if something could have happened to Cam too.

"Okay, Cam. This joke isn't funny anymore. Knock it off."

Re: Beginners

[identity profile] cameronmitchell.livejournal.com 2006-04-12 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
He sighed as somehow anything he said was always the wrong thing. This race was so touchy. "I apologise, I was merely trying to help."

Re: Beginners

[identity profile] bruiser-in-pink.livejournal.com 2006-04-12 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
And again, that was the wrong answer. Something had definitely happened to Cam. The radio said John had been talking to someone who wasn't there. Cam wasn't doing that, but maybe she should call Aeryn and find out for sure. She needed to talk to Charlie too; see what he knew.

Until class was over though, Molly decided to play along with whatever was going on. She didn't want to upset him too much.

"I know you were, Cam," she said with a grin. Then she thought of a way to see just how bad this delusion, or whatever, was. "Maybe you could get me one of those hats for my birthday. It's not that far off."

Re: Beginners

[identity profile] cameronmitchell.livejournal.com 2006-04-12 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Another birthday, he nodded slowly but asking when would probably be a tip off. "I shall endeavour to acquire one in for your day of birth."

Pippi doesn't bother to measure anything.

"Pie!" she tells Broots smartly.

Pippi sighed and measured her coffee cup and cookie.

Yay lollypop!

Pippi measured the lollypop and then started sucking on it.

"Thanks!" she said through a mouth full of lollypop.

Pip gets up and excuses himself to the bathroom. When he comes back, he has the measurements of his eye-patch. He also measures a doughnut.
