"So, I don't know about you guys," said Summer, from the front of the classroom sim in the danger shop that was looking out over the pink beach from yesterday's
relaxation class, because, um, hi? Why
wouldn't she totally just borrow that? "But with the school trip next week, and it being Friday and all, my brain is already pretty much on island time, and, yes, don't worry, I absolutely want to punch myself in the face for just now using the phrase 'island time' in any real and serious capacity.
"So let's talk about theory today," she continued with a shrug and a wistful glance out the window, "and if that's not vibing with us today, then we'll just call it early and you guys can go get your vacations started early, unless you're in one of the other classes today, anyway. Specifically, I was thinking we can touch on the idea of, like, choice and free will or whatever, particularly in the context of how our decisions might influence other dimensions.
"For
example," she gestured vaguely, "me deciding to do this topic for this class today is what becomes the reality in
this dimension, but there are
infinite other dimensions where I decided to teach something else today, like dopplegangers or what to do when you cross dimensions or I canceled class or I just brought in jello to torture you all with, or I turned into a robot or there's a substitute teacher instead. And the real question here is: were all those other dimensions already existing and going along their own path,
or, by making a decision and rejecting those others, did I create
new dimensions that followed the pathway of those ideas that I rejected? Essentially, then: do multiple dimensions just exist or do we actually create them, spawning more and more
ad infinitum whenever we make a choice or a decision.
"This
does tie in to the
Many World Interpretation we've brought up in this class before, and essentially then creates just, like, the
messiest branching tree of possibilities. And then I always have to wonder, especially since I deal with a
lot of crossing those branches back in my home dimension....if the branches can branch out from each other, do they were grow
back? Like, do two different decisions somehow lead to the same event anyway and, like,
merge? Do dimensions ever just get straight up destroyed, like pruning the branch? What then? Does it ever start back up again? Like, these are all clearly theoretical, most of this quantum crap is, but that
is the class, so let's, like, talk about it, or whatever. Or not. That's kind of all I've got for everyone today, and, quite frankly, I'd rather be trying on cute new swimsuits for next week right now than thinking about any of this, but it's my job to at least try."
There was a pause, and then she sighed.
"Ugh, there's a ton of Summers out there right now trying on cute swimsuits instead of talking about this, fuck.
But....were those Summers
always out there trying on cute swimsuits? Or are they only doing it because
I made a decision? Now
that's the question."
