“Welcome back,” Cutter began that week’s class, “this week we’re going to start looking at the Fossil Record, which will be something that you will refer back to when studying fossils,” he explained, “the fossil record is a history of life on Earth documented by fossils and this is through the remains or imprints of organisms from earlier geological periods preserved in sedimentary rock,”
“Study of the fossil record has provided important information for at least three different purposes. The progressive changes observed within an animal group are used to describe the evolution of that group In general, but not always, successive generations tend to change morphologically in a particular direction e.g., the progressive acquisition or loss of specific features, and these changes are often interpreted as better adaptation through preferential selection of beneficial mutations to a particular environment,” Cutter added, nodding over at Connor for him to continue the lecture.
Connor nodded and then continued the lecture, glancing up from the notes in his hands “Fossils like bones, shells, footprints, and even preserved soft tissues can be turned into fossils under the right conditions. They can reveal information about an organism's size, shape, and behavior. Fossils are arranged based on their geological location in rock layers, allowing scientists to determine their relative age.
The fossil record provides evidence of how species have changed and evolved over time, giving us a glimpse at what life might have been like before humans existed. It’s a vital tool and one of the first points scientist use to understand the ancient past.” Connor considered the class for a moment then nodded back to Cutter to see if there was anything more he wanted to add before they got into the rest of the class.
Cutter nodded as he continued speaking, “For the rest of the class, I would like you to go over this fossil record
activity, this will go in more detail to the process of the fossil record and what a fossil is,” he finished, “and as always if there’s any questions for either myself or Mr. Temple, we’ll be happy to talk to you after class has finished,”
