There was a cat in the classroom today. An average sized, perfectly ordinary looking, orange cat.

"Why is there a cat?" Cara asked. Totally just for the benefit of the class.

"Well, it's not a cat." Jane had been surprised by this too before.

Well, that wasn't at all ominous. "Why is there a not-a-cat," Cara amended.

"That... is a long story," Jane said. "He's a friend of a friend's and I ended up watching him for a little bit. But! I thought he might be useful in teaching you all about not making assumptions in a fight."

The not-a-cat just purred and rubbed against Jane's leg.

Cara bent to pick the not-a-cat up and look more closely at it. "Was it assumptions about the sex of ginger cats because she's a-"

Oh, look, tentacles. Quite a lot of them. More than should fit in a cat that size actually.

"More... that," Jane said as the tentacles just disappeared again. "Mostly that. He ate one of my chairs?"

"...I see," Cara said slowly, still holding the not-a-cat. "So, how do we deal with the good kitty?"

One nice thing about a class like this one is that it could be a little...cathartic. Therapeutic. Beneficial to one's mental well-being. Which was why, even though they were set up as usual in their little medieval Ren Faire-esque training grounds, while Amaya got class started, Rosa was busying herself with piling various radios, speakers, and other devices that were, naturally, continuing to play an endless stream of various versions of Carol of the Bells.

"Today," Amaya announced, "we're talking war hammers, a weapon that, as you can guess by its name, was used by a lot of foot soldiers and cavalry during battles. Now, we'll likely keep this short," and not even just because it was annoying trying to talk over the music, "but you'll notice a lot of similarity between the war hammer and some of the other weapons we've covered. Like an axe, you've got a handle and a head, and the length of the handle can vary, anywhere between short like a mace or long like a halberd. The big difference is the shape the head, which is usually going to have a blunt side and a pointed side, and its designed to best crush through armor and cause concussions to your enemy. The spike on the end also makes for a good way to target armor, reins, shield, the legs of a horse...I'm sure you can think of plenty of things, today our targets are going to be a little less....organic, but we'll get to that in due time."

Because, of course, even with the music, Amaya had plenty more to say about the war hammer, its history, points about making it, so on and so forth, you knew how the class went, to the point where she barely even noticed the music any more, she was that much into it. But Rosa, on the other hand, could not be so easily distracted, and was clearly getting impatient about getting to her part of the class.

But they'll get there. Eventually. Look, prolonging it would only make it feel that much more satisfying, right?

It was incredibly hard to concentrate over endless Carol of the Bells, wasn't it? After the fortieth rendition, even Steve was beginning to look a little frayed around the edges.

"Well."

"Today sure is something," Tony said with a grimace that implied he was going to end up murdering someone.

"And song wasn't even around during the Renaissance," Steve complained. Like the island was going out of its way to make them non-compliant with the class theme.

"So, today... earplugs?" Tony suggested. Then nodded like he'dsettled on that one. "Earplugs. And some cookies for braving class."

Jo was back at the library for her shift and she was expecting it to be a quiet one but once she got there she realised that the computer seemed to be playing Carol of the Bells on a loop so she was listening to that as she worked on keeping busy with reshelving the books that she had to put away that day. Every now and then she would sing along to the song as well.
