You know, say what you will about Summer's masochism and cruelty for even conducting and conceiving of a class like this, but at least she wasn't the monster who did the schedule that meant having to subject people to this experience first thing in the morning. But Summer was eager and excited to get started, as she stood at the front of the room with three dishes before he and an eagerness to begin.

"Today," she began, "we're going to be discussing three cases of vintage desserts with ingredients you probably wouldn't normally expect in a dessert and whether or not those ingredients belong in them. I mean, I could literally do a whole class on the discourse of the classic beef fudge, but I decided to bring a couple other examples into the mix to give us a better overview of the range of possibilities.

"Our first case involved a recipe that I was able to trace back as far as the 1800s, but really rose into popularity with the introduction of Ritz Crackers in 1934 and the subsequent Great Depression going on in America at the time. Behold, the mock apple pie, perfect for when you want a nice slice of piping hot Americana but apples are scarce or out of season!

"Next up, we have the chocolate mayonnaise cake, a recipe that started showing up on jars of Hellman's mayo as far back as 1937, though it may have been a more traditional recipe in some circles before it got that sweet, sweet corporate capitalism boost. It's still actually pretty popular in some circles even today, but the one we have to try here is definitely from a vintage recipe in the spirit of the class.

"And, finally, we have the infamous beef fudge, coming to us from a 1967 cookbook published by the wives of cattle farmers and ranchers, which just goes to prove, there's always an economic tie-in for these things. And, yes, it is exactly how it sounds, it's fudge...but with roast beef blended into it.

"So! I'm going to go over a little bit more of what was involved in making these particular examples of bizarro dessert ideas from the past, and then ye brave among you can go ahead and give them a try while we talk about how these came to be, why they came to be, and if they should ever have come to be. Also, if you have any other great stories of unexpected ingredients in desserts, please, for the love of god, share them, so that I can try to make them and foist them upon others as I am foisting these ones upon you today."

Class was back in the Danger Shop, and Lana looked faintly concerned, which meant you probably should be, too.

"I'm not convinced this exercise will work with non-lethal incentives, but we're going to try it, and I encourage you all to take it as seriously as if it were life or death." The lack of killing students was definitely nice when you were a student, but it did make planning lessons more difficult.

"Today's task is to get to the top of that plascrete wall." She pointed at the tall edifice behind her. "Whichever team makes it to the top first - without use of the Force or other powers - will get ice cream. Or rather, gift cards to the ice cream shop, because I didn't want it melting first. However, before you get there, you each must complete a task."

A fair distance in front of the wall were two plinths with buttons on them. "One person from each team will step up to one of these, and you'll each press a button. If you both press green, you'll both continue on as you were. If you press red and your opponent presses green, you will get a grappling hook and your opponent will get doused in lubricant. However if you both press red, you both get doused in lubricant. So you must decide - how badly do you want to try to win, and how much can you trust somebody on the other team?"

She really wished she had popcorn for this.

Stark, standing in the front of the home ec room, was looking much better this week and not at all like he might collapse at any moment from sheer exhaustion.

"Welcome back. I hope everyone is rested today. Feeling better than last time. Unless you weren’t sleepless last week. Then…I hope you're still fine?" He hadn't really thought that 'unless' through.

"We can actually bake today, I think. Without worrying we might burn the school down or have some sort of terrible baking accident."

"I thought we could try colors as a theme this time. Something different. Yellow, to start," he said, gesturing toward the box on the counter in front of him. "I've brought some yellow ingredients to make yellow cupcakes or at least cupcakes with yellow."

He opened the box then and started removing items one by one. "Lemons. Bananas. Pineapple. Something called yuzu. And…canned corn? I didn't bring that. Why would that be here? I don't want corn."

Summer was getting a suspicious look right about now if she was in the room even though this was entirely a strange island occurrence and nothing to do with her at all.

"There are recipes, if you like, and some already finished yellow cake cupcakes if you'd like to eat one or just make frosting for those."

When students arrived in the classroom, they wouldn't find a teacher, only the smell of sulfur and burnt felt.

It was probably fine.

"CLASS CANCELLED. BRB GROWING FUR" the sign said.

So that was helpful.

[OOC: Family emergency, gang. No brain for Beaker today.]

Jo wasn’t feeling as tired as she had been last week and the books seemed to have gone back to normal, so she was spending some time that morning reshelving books .

She didn’t have a lot of books to reshelve so it didn’t take her that long to put everything away and once she had completed that she sat down to write a new letter home to her friend Deidre and let her know about how the new session of classes was going. She even mentioned that she had gone swimming in the beach for a bit, which she knew Deirdre was going to be surprised to hear about considering how much drama swimming had been for Jo last year at school.
