Okay, this whole lack of sleep thing suuuuuucked, and Summer was just ready to get through whatever kind of weekend they were building up to so they could be done with it and move on with their lives and maybe sleep for the next few years as a result, but, right now, she had a terrible class to teach while feeling terrible, and clinging to a cup of coffee for dear life.

"Hey, everyone," she said, sighing heavily and not even caring that she was slouching on the counter of the community center's kitchen classroom and probably looking like she hadn't slept in four days because guess what she hadn't! "Welcome to Ancient Food Crimes, a class where we explore some of the most disturbing and traumatic food events of the past century, maybe a little before that, because some of the things those people did to food are too terrifying and disgusting to just ignore. Or maybe you actually like that sort of thing. Who knows? I've met all sorts of people and I've met all sorts of foods that they're still willing to put into their mouths.

"Now, I looked at the roster, and I know most of you, but there are a few names I'm less familiar with, so, lucky you guys, you're in for a treat. Anyway, my name is Summer Smith, I'm sort of notorious around here for doing terrible things to jello, and I hope to prove it to you in this course. Why do I do this? Who knows? Maybe just because it's fun."

And it got her a weird amount of validation, popularity, and a strange sense of accomplishment, three things she desperately craved even more than sleep. Yes, even right now. Give her that tasty, tasty validation, and she'll be fine never sleeping ever again.

"And I don't know how many of you are really affected by this whole sleep thing...I know it's definitely kicking my ass. So I feel like introducing you guys to some of the really messed up shit right off the bat is going to to some mega-regrettable nightmares down the road. So today, even though it deprives us of at least one truly cursed vintage recipe, I just can't in good conscious actually subject any of you to that in my current state. Well. That's not entirely true. Since I haven't been sleeping, I did make..."

And here was when she moved over to a clouche that had definitely been there the whole time and lifted it up to reveal....a monstrosity and an accompanying beverage.

"....these, soooo...."

She did not look like a proud woman in this moment, no.

"I guess what we're going to do is...since it's the first class and I'm tired as hell, is come on up, help yourself to a little bit of my sleep-deprived madness if you're feeling so bold, and tell us who you are, any allergies I should be aware of, how you've ended up in this class, and, if you can think of it, what's the worst thing you've probably ever eaten."

There was a slight pause. "I'm not sure my answer is actually appropriate for a classroom setting," she offered, and then looked over the room. "Who's next?"

Stark had not slept since Sunday night. Stark was exhausted. His eye was red. His shoulders were slumped. He hadn’t shaved in days. Sleeping poorly was nothing new but a complete lack of sleep like this for days was not something he’d had to deal with before. Stark was still standing in front of the cupcake students in the home ec classroom. Perhaps standing was too strong of a word. Stark was upright but leaning heavily against the wall and looking blearily at the assembled students.

“I haven’t slept,” he said, sounding just as exhausted as he knew he looked. “No sleep all week. Not at all. I…I can’t. I know I’m not the only one but that doesn’t make it better. I hope some of you have slept. Maybe all of you. Have you? No. It doesn’t matter. I…we’re not baking today. Not a good idea. Next week. If we’re still functioning then. Am I even really functioning now?” Yes, Stark was talking mostly to himself there.

He shook his head then as if trying to clear his thoughts. “I brought coffee. I brought lots of coffee. If you want that. And coffee cupcakes. If you want them. And…chocolate covered espresso beans. It might help. A little. It might not. I don’t know. At least it all tastes good. Or I think it does. I don’t know what you all think.” If anyone didn’t think coffee or cupcakes tasted good, hopefully they wouldn’t tell Stark that today. He might not be able to take it in his current sleep-deprived state.

Someone in the administration had insisted--strenuously--that Beaker have his class in the Danger Shop (something about insurance and liability and fire suppression systems), so welcome to the Danger Shop, everyone!

Beaker was wearing his lab coat and standing in front of the classroom, looking extremely nervous. This was his default expression, so don't read too much into it.

"Meep meep meep," he began as everyone found a chair. "Meep meep meep--" he gestured expansively with his arm, "--meep meep meep mee!"

Everyone get that? No?

"Meep," he said, moving around to the other side of the lab table and picking up a beaker of a clear liquid. "Meep meep meep meep meep!"

Then he picked up a huge piece of sodium with tongs. So...hopefully people who recognized that were stepping back a bit.

"Meep meep mee--" he said, tipping it into the beaker of water.

Explosion.

"MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"

Don't worry, the fire suppression system would kick on in a second, plus there was a very wise firefighter in the classroom.

"Good afternoon," Lana greeted them all. Class was meeting in the Danger Shop, for Reasons. She was content and confident in front of the class. Had she slept all week? Nope! But that was what the Force was for, right? She was dressed in low black boots, a stylish but sensible grey suit, and a dark green blouse. Never let it be said that all Sith were fashion disasters.

"Welcome to the last class of the week, where you're probably all sick of introductions but we're doing them anyway, because I either don't know you or I haven't seen you in almost thirty years. My name is Lana Beniko. I went to school here last year apparently, but it's been a lot longer for me back home. Which is another galaxy, for those of you who don't know.

"I've been spending a lot of time there wrangling, coercing, and occasionally violently persuading people to work together, so I thought I'd bring some of my expertise here. And perhaps learn more from some of you, as well."

She looked around the room and nodded at them all. "Right. So, give us your name and something interesting about yourself."

Unlike last semester, Jo only had one class on Fridays so she was able to stay at the library longer and she was glad she only had the one class because she was finding it very hard to get the energy to do anything.

Jo had been unable to sleep this entire week and at first she had been fine and been able to go about her days as normal but by Friday she was finding it a struggle and all she wanted was to sleep but found that she couldn’t.

Eventually she found herself mostly sitting at the front desk unable to do much else since all of the books in the library seemed to be about sleeping and bedtime stories today and it wasn't helping Jo try and distract herself from her lack of sleep.
