So Summer felt like she was is a little bit of a conundrum...a very little bit of a conundrum, since it was definitely pretty miniscule compared to the conundrum that was people and buildings disappearing down holes or whatever. Like, people were falling down holes and yet this was (technically) a school, and should workshops go on as scheduled? And when a comparrison of her roster to the the people actually able to make it class made a few things clear, it just didn't feel right> to torture whoever remained with terrible pies in light of everything.

Especially when the two people who were the most fun to torture with mind-boggling recipes weren't there.

RUDE.

So Summer decided to maybe be a little surprising and a little nice to whoever managed to remain on the surface for the time being, and gave whoever did show up to class a little bit of a smile.

"So, hiiiiiii," she started. "Welcome to a Summer summer pie class, which is a little awkward to get started when a good chunk of your classmates and fellow island residents are, you know, missing and stuff, but I guess the pies must go on? Or something? So we're still going to learn something today. Sometimes that's good, too, it gets your mind off of things for a little while and by the end of it, you'll have a delicious pie!

"Well, probably not usually a delicious pie, in this class, but today's going to be an exception to that. Today, we're going to go ahead and enter the world of pies in a very traditional sense, by learning how to make you basic bitch pie. That way, next week, when all this is figured out and the rest of the class is here, you guys can brag about how you actually had a good pie before we start delving into some potentially horrific ones. And it's just good to know there's a basis for comparrison for this kind of thing. I mean, unless you're just really bad at making pies, but, hey, that's another benefit of today's class, is that we'll find out where you currently are on the pie-making spectrum right off the gate.

"So, unless there's any questions, we'll go ahead and get started on your good old classic apple pie. No weird ingredients. No gimmicks. No nothing. And I promise, this is not a trap."

Was it entirely possible that Shunsui might not have even noticed anything odd going on around the island if it wasn't for a few text exchanges with Summer-chan regarding the store and his own status of being not sucked into a hole?

Yes. Yes, it entirely was, but now that he was quite aware of the situation, he was clearly going to be using this to his advantage and sending out a message as best he could to all his students, who would hopefully receive the texts and squirrel notes free of any raccoon delivery holes:

It would appear that our fair island is currently suffering from an epidemic of potentially dangerous holes ♥. Far be it from me to put anyone at risk of falling into said holes for the sake of an education in a trifling subject ♥. Let us put off our first meeting, shall we, until we know it is a bit safer for us to traverse about and pursue our battle games. I shall see you next week when this all blows over, but, of course, should any of you need me for anything in the meantime, I shall be dutifully at your disposal ♥.
    ;   ♥ ♥ Shunsui Kyōraku ♥ ♥

As if anyone would be terribly surprised that Shunsui would use the current state of the island as a convenient excuse to get out of teaching his class. Honestly, it was a bit more surprising that he didn't lean on the island's oddities to do so more often.

But he would also make the case that knowing when to fight and chosing your battles, which one could argue he was doing right now, in a sense, was a lesson in and of itself!

Now if you'll excuse him, he was just going to go back to napping.

Sam was feeling extremely patriotic today. Moreso even than usual. But could you blame him? The 4th of July had been mere days ago! Why, it had been observed only yesterday! So it was only natural that Sam was here, at the front of the classroom, dressed in some of his patriotic finest. Yes, some. Of course he had more where this came from!

“As you all know, students, Sunday was a very important day in this country! It was the Fourth of July! INDEPENDENCE DAY! And what finer way to begin our study of Americana than with a discussion of the very founding of this great nation!”

“Yes, in 1776 on the fourth day of July, America declared its independence!! Traditionally this is celebrated with barbecues which we discussed in another class. And with fireworks! There was a shameful lack of fireworks to be found on this island. Very disappointing! An utter lack of patriotism! Why, there was no celebration here at all! I am extremely disappointed!”

There was also a shocking lack of fireworks during this class. If only Beaker were here, rather than trapped in a hole, they could have had a fine fireworks display here in the classroom!

"I am also disappointed that my colleague, Kermit the Frog, was invited to our nation's capital to host 'A Capital Fourth' on PBS, the least weird of all broadcast networks, this weekend when I, Sam Eagle, was both available and nearby!"

The indignity of it all!

“I have brought, for your enjoyment, footage of a reenactment performed by myself and my colleagues, of the signing of the Declaration of Independence! And after we have watched this stunning performance, we shall all introduce ourselves!”

Anyone who made it as far as the classroom for Yennefer's workshop would find a sign on the door:

What are you doing here? Go home. Be safe.

You couldn't scam anyone if you'd fallen down a hole, after all. Consider that your first lesson, kids.
