betterthanaplan: (why yes I have done some modeling)

Duke had planned out this class well before he knew what the island had in store for them all in the run up to Halloween — and certainly before he knew he'd be attacked by clowns just trying to get up to the school to teach today.

So while the spooky set up of the ship at sea on a moonless night, lit only by a brazier in the center of the deck, full of quietly lapping water and creaking timbers was totally intentional. The fact that their teacher/captain was leading class while splattered with orange clown blood and holding an axe . . . not so much.

But hey, you worked with what you had.

The sea is a spooky place )
raisedbybooklice: Alexandra Dowling as Elisabeth Scrivener (Skulking 01)

Elisabeth had made the foolish decision to run to town for one of those delicious 'pumpkin' coffees (that didn't taste at all of pumpkin, but the candy corn wasn't corn at all either, so clearly people just liked to name things at random here) before class this morning. That had turned into a run away from town when a painted horror had flung itself at her and tried to attack her.

The lessons she'd had all her life to fight Maleficts had left that creature honking and hollering in pain behind, but Elisabeth had no desire to test her luck further. As it was, her pumpkin drink had been sacrificed to her survival and she wasn't about to venture forth to get another.

Nope, Elisabeth was quite content to hole up here in the library, broom in hand in case anything tried to break in, while reading spooky stories to help her learn what exactly that meant.

...That was not helping her calm down, truth be told.

"So, for no reason at all, it's time for this semester's screening of The Lady Cons' Caper. No reason."

Subtle, Aphra.

If you were looking closely, you'd notice some orange blood on the edges of Anakin's robes today.

"Today we're going to talk about the ethics of violence," he said. "In related news, if you are very much against violence...avoid town today. The clowns are back and are extremely aggressive." He began walking around the classroom as he continued speaking. "There's a variety of positions to take regarding violence: you can object to it in all forms, you can decide to hit people who hit you first, you can support the government's use of violence against aggressors without wanting to be specifically a part of it yourself...you could be an angry clown in town and decide that everyone's hearts belong to you."

He shrugged. "Personally, I don't agree with that last one, but as always, this class is about finding out where your line is. Is it fine to shoot at a drive through window because they forgot your barbecue sauce? I think that's kind of insane, but you might disagree."

He clasped his hands together. "So. Violence. Where do you stand?"

"Happy Halloween, if that's your thing," Liam greeted the students as they arrived at the Danger Shop. Today's weirdness seemed to be pretty benign, but yesterday's had the teachers thinking that perhaps today's class ought to be spent on something like basic self defense.

They had spent an unconscionable amount of time searching for the gym in the school after radio had announced Lucifer had found one, but apparently the school was continuing to hide it from them. And so they were back in the Danger Shop, currently set up to look like a self-defense studio. "Usually," Verity continued, tying her hair back, "Halloween is meant to bring candy to people who dress up and go trick-or-treating, but sometimes it brings you...clowns. Killer clowns. Or maybe guys in creepy masks or with knife gloves."

"... Right," Liam said slowly, because those seemed like very specific examples. Look, he wasn't old enough to watch horror movies, okay? Don't judge.

Verity had really fallen down on the pre-Halloween celebrations, hadn't she? For shame. "So, today, we're covering some of the basics of defending yourself and your property from whatever random serial killers drag themselves out of various haunted summer camps or whatever." She paused and sighed. "Well, that's what we've decided to do. Who knows what's actually going to happen."

In Verity's defense, the last couple weeks had been pretty busy. She could be forgiven for not having the time to introduce Liam to traditional Halloween cinema.

With a somewhat resigned look, Liam pressed the button to start the simulation.

The Danger Shop today resembled a half-finished haunted house setup: the framework of the walls was mapped out with 2x4s but you could see right through into the adjacent rooms in most places. Various hand and power tools and the occasional bit of lumber were still lying around, extension cords snaked across the floor, crates of decorations and building materials were stacked up in the corners.

And there was Kennedy, leaning against the open doorframe of the first room with her arms crossed and an easygoing half-smile on her face.

"Funny thing back home," she began in a conversational tone, "this is actually the slowest night of the year in the vampire-slayage business. All the actual demon-types take the night off while everyone else pretends to be them. Not to say there hasn't been wacky on Halloween, it's just… usually weird mystical wonkiness."

She paused and chuckled. "That has nothing to do with class, actually. It's just some holiday-specific, possibly candy corn-like flavor. Wait. Ew. Other not-gross candy flavor of your choice. So, today's scenario is courtesy of a colleague of mine who reported one of her squads dealing with something like this last Halloween. You're workers just trying to get this damn thing finished in time for the holiday, only turns out? When you build a haunted house on an ancient mystical site, there's enough residual power there to --" Kennedy swirled one hand in the air in the kind of gesture you made when there was a word you kept trying to think of and it just kept escaping somehow. "To make the creepies a lot more real. For lack of a better word."

It was zombies, though. Kennedy figured after yesterday people might be a little burned out on clowns after yesterday.

"So, again, get to the end of this maze thing, using whatever you can think of that's available to you in here to fight the zombies off. Yes, you can work together if you want to. Safety in numbers, right?"
