somethingwithturquoise: (just so happy right now)

Once again, class was in the Danger Shop. And once again, they would be greeted by Kanan and Summer, along with one extra special guest for the day; a medium-sized dog, all happiness and rainbow spots, who was just barely managing to keep his butt planted on the floor, looking up at Kanan and hoping - hoping! - that he'd be given the go-ahead to visit each and every new person coming into the room.

Kanan was a big ol' meanie and was absolutely making Stance stay put for the time being.

"Hey again, guys," he greeted, nodding at the students gathered. "This week, we'd like to talk a little bit about positive and negative early impressions of a new place."

With handy visual guides and/or trauma, naturally.

It just sort of went without saying. Summer, meanwhile, had to shake herself back into attention once she realized that Kanan had gone and gotten class started, but, to be fair, Stance was always very distracting and he was being just so good...so good! She was going to spoil him stupid with pets and snacks when this was over! Oh, yes she was! She was! Oh, yes, she--

--right, class. "Right!" Class now, most adorable dog in the multiverse later. Summer hit the class with a bright smile. "And just as we found out last week that there's a wide variety of new places out there, there can be a wide range of reactions to those places, as well. We all come from different places, we all react to things differently, and that's okay. It's what you do with those reactions that'll end up mattering.

"So, today," she continued, "we're going to experience two...very different things, both of them something pluck straight from the good ol' classic, actual-things-that-happened-here Fandom Island playbook! A nice little burst of some homespun culture shock in handy bite-sized pieces. And then we'll sort of, you know, talk about how you reacted, how your classmates reacted, any other thoughts, things like that.

"So, without further ado, I'll pass it over to Kanan. I actually wasn't here for this first one; it was before my time, unfortunately, so this is going to be an experience for me, too." One she was clearly perhaps a bit too excited for, shut up. "You guys ready? Kanan?"

….still a little weird to call him that, TBH.

The classroom was once again a tavern this time around. Which was what the class needed for the subject. Although, there was a pretty random chalkboard with 'Getting Out Of Conversations' written on it. Which was weird.

With 'sometimes with punching' written just below it in different handwriting. If was up to the students to figure out which was which teacher. It was a mystery.

So mysterious. "Small talk is stupid and you shouldn't have to do it," Cara said. "Unfortunately some people will insist on it." Usually people who couldn't take a hint in her case.

"Sometimes you gotta get information from an NPC, but you super don't care about anything else. You need to learn how to get yourself out of that talk subtly." Because clearly Magnus knew subtle, kids.

"I usually find punching subtle enough." Mystery solved! "Or jumping out a window. Or throwing someone out a window."

"Let's practice that!" If you thought he'd turn down the chance to get thrown out a window... You'd be wrong.

Magnus cleared his throat, clearly getting into character. "Good evening, Miss! Would you like to discuss local politics and then religion?"

Cara didn't even bother to say anything before grabbing Magnus by the shirt and heaving him out the tavern window. Pay attention to her form, kids, and remember to lift with your knees.

A thumbs up appeared from just outside that now busted window. "Now you kids partner up and try! It's cool, there's a crash pad like in the movies out here!"

There. Now it was safe.

The squirrels had delivered a note and a key from the office telling her that she'd been assigned an office and where it was.

She had a classroom. What the heck did she need an office for? Jack went to investigate it anyway. She found it easily enough. It was right around the corner from the stairs and near the bathrooms. She gave an indelicate snort. If they expected her to police whether kids were smoking in there, they had chosen the wrong teacher for that. She'd confiscate the cigarettes, sure, because free cigarettes but she wasn't going to rat the kids out for it. She saw her job more as keeping them from getting lung cancer before they graduated than imposing a moral edict.

Even she had a few morals but anti-smoking wasn't one of 'em.

The door was a plain industrial wooden door. The lock looked absolute garbage; she could pick that thing in about three seconds with a fingernail alone. Still. It was now the door to her office.

Firing up her Omni, she held it over the door at eye-height and slowly passed it over. Her Omni had far less capabilities than Kaidan's and was more the equivalent of one of the antique cell phones people around here used and she mostly had it as an at-hand medigel dispensary, but it could print in any of the materials stored in it.

Her name appeared under it, bonded to the wood in shiny chromatic plastic. "JACK ZERO". Smirked at it once she'd accomplished her tiny bit of vandalism and then let herself into the office with the key. The key turned too loosely in the lock. She was definitely replacing that lock. She'd even make sure the office got a copy of the key when she did it. A new lock would at least make picking it a challenge. Jack didn't plan to keep anything here that she couldn't live without. She knew students.

It'd be a place to put the swear jar, at least.

Inside was clean but hadn't been repainted. She could see outline by way of faded paint around squares and rectangles where whoever'd had the office last had hung things on the walls. There were file drawers - empty, she checked - a bookshelf, a desk, and a half-decent desk chair that wasn't all sagging cushions and exposed springs. Swank!

She checked the drawers of the desk and then pulled them all out and set them on the floor beside her while she investigated the rest of the cabinet. Partly looking for secret compartments and partly looking for places she could install some.

No trips to the dollar store today, which meant no arguments about getting into vans, at least. It was the little things.

"Mornin'," Hardison said, waving at the class. "Today, we're explorin' the artistic medium of puttin' images on different things. That's the very technical term. We got a lot of supplies for you to work with, though I did cheat a little today." He gestured to several laptops, each hooked up to a laser printer, and two other wireless printers. "I figured y'all might wanna print out some pictures for yourselves, either from your phones or somethin' and wanted to give you the option. Everythin' else, though, is one hundred percent dollar store bought."

There were smooth, decorative river stones, ranging in size from a thumb all the way up to roughly head-sized. Various kinds of wood lay in piles, from machine carved hearts, to palm-sized squares of wood you might see in shop class, to carved wooden letters, and even thin, unfinished wood slices with the bark still on. There were ceramic tiles, coffee cups, plates and bowls, and a ton of other moddable supplies.

Transferring images )

"Once it's completely clear, you can paint a layer or Modpodge over it; that'll protect the image against the elements an' add a layer of gloss to the front. You can do all sorts of stuff with this: make a set of magnets for the dorm fridge. Make pendant jewelry. Hell, make a chess set of different rocks with images of knights an' queens an' bishops on 'em. Go nuts. But by the end of the class, I wanna see some kind of unified project with at least five different items with transferred images on 'em."
