Fjord was alone in the Danger Shop today as students started to file in, though the exhaustion on his face wasn't from staying up late for any New Year's countdown (and really, he hadn't been aware that it was much of a thing around here anyway), but because he'd woken up early to try to figure this damn room out. And he'd done a nominally functional job of it, too. He'd managed to achieve 'standing in front of a pub overlooking the docks of a port town,' anyway, though the water seemed to be frozen in place. Not ice. Just... unmoving, droplets hanging in the air where the waves had presumably broken against the pier. There were no people, himself and the students being the obvious exception, and if one were to attempt to go into the pub, they'd take a step directly into a two-foot drop down into a ballpit.

So, a work in progress. )

It was New Year's freaking Day and Brooke had a first period class, and she was maybe wondering if she was in hell a little bit.

But she was pulling it together! And she was double fisting coffee when she had the students meet her over at the causeway. Don't judge, children, you'd know this life too someday, possibly.

"Good morning, and welcome to Make It Fashion," she said. "In this class you're going to learn how to make your own clothes from someone with a successful fashion line that she started in high school. That would be me. Brooke. Ms. Davis. I don't care. Today we're going to start off by going to a fabric shop that's actually open, and you're going to buy ten fabrics that you like and will be using in class. We'll go back midway through the semester so if you miss out on something, don't worry."

"Hey." Miguel greeted the students with a little wave from the hand that wasn't holding his coffee. "For those of you I didn't have in the Fall, I'm Miguel O'Hara. Sure, call me Doctor or Mister if you have to, otherwise Miguel's fine. And no, I'm not hungover, my eyes are light-sensitive. I got to choose my own class this time, so we're doing fun things with science instead of trying to figure out impossible things. But hey, if you figure out an impossible thing, maybe we can patent it for you."

He gestured at the Danger Shop around them. "We'll be meeting here every week. Safeties are a good thing, and this way you won't kill each other." Especially since Beaker was in the class again.

"Today's for introductions, but don't think that gets you out of science. It's problem solving, so I want you to solve the problem of how to introduce yourself with flair and give me an idea of who you are. With science! If you need some ideas, here."

He passed out tablets with several different suggestions of things they could do.

"Any of these, anything else you can think of as long as you can explain the science behind it in at least general terms. Give us your name and where you're from, and show us some science you like! Oh, and if anyone's interested, I could use a TA; come let me know."

Aphra showed up to class late. And very visibly hungover. Things were clearly off to a great start.

She chugged back her caf before speaking. "Look, there are three options here. Either you want to learn to lie, which you're gonna, you missed the part where the name of the class is ironic, so it sucks to be you, or there was a paperwork error and it really sucks to be you.

"I don't really want to be here today, and I doubt most of you do either, so I'll be quick. Honesty is great in principle, but it doesn't work because people. People are jerks, people's feelings get hurt, people really don't like it when you point out they've karked something up or they're wrong. Lies help smooth things out, lies protect you, especially when you come from the kind of galaxy I do, lies are useful. You just have to know how to use them right.

"It's the first class, so introduce yourselves to each other. Lie. But not about everything. See if you can figure out which is which. But, you know, quietly."
