livingartifact: (let me explain)

Introduction to Earth Zoology met in one of the standard classrooms, this week, though when the students stepped through they might be surprised to find that rather than the usual arrangement of whiteboard and individual desks, there was instead of a warmly lit room cluttered with aging electronics and ephemera, with a single long table featuring enough seats for every student, and a rolling blackboard.

Was Jenkins secretly abusing the Library's backdoor function to transport his students to a magical library full of madcap? Don't be absurd. That would be catastrophically foolish. He quite possibly did abuse it in order to make it easier to swap out the furniture about to create a more academically pleasing atmosphere though. Really, using the back door was barely using magic. It was almost impossible that it would have any lingering consequences for the students and their souls.

He promised to try not to get the students immediately killed )

The Danger Shop looked like a cave of wonders today. A cave of battered, broken wonders, often with very suspicious burn marks along with a number of work-benches.

"So I've already taught those of you I recognise about actually finding artifacts," Aphra said clapping her hands together. "But it turns out they're much more valuable when they're not all kinds of broken. Now, when we're talking about artwork and pottery, fixing that is a specialised field that takes years of study, skill, and something resembling talent. Trust me, the results aren't pretty when amateurs try it. Tech, on the other hand, you still need skill for the real tricky stuff, but the bar for entry level fixes is a lot lower."

She waved a hand around the room. "But we'll get to all that later, for now, pick something you think is interesting from the pile. You don't even need to know what it is, but take your time because it's gonna be a project over the semester. Then introduce yourself to the class and explained why you picked it."

So, somebody had apparently smashed Summer's phone.

The phone that Peridot had spent about a week making more functional, at Summer's behest. On the downside, this meant that Peridot had to go scrounging for parts all over again. On the upside, an upgrade she'd done once already was made that much easier the second time around.

So Peridot was in the library today, tinkering and reading books. Books from the bottom shelf, because she still couldn't figure out where the ladder had gone.

She had her suspicions that the books were hiding it on her shift just to mess with her. That seemed like something they'd do.

"Hey, guys," Vanessa said, "welcome to Taking Time For You. I'm Vanessa, and I'll be your teacher. Now, there are a lot of reasons you could be stressed. You could be stressed because high school is hard and your parents are awful. You could be stressed because you have an undiagnosed anxiety disorder. You could be stressed because you're planning a wedding--hopefully that's just me. You could be stressed because your country is being run by a useless orange baboon and Houston is currently in the process of becoming New Atlantis. We're not here to judge why you need to step back and take a moment, we're here to learn how to do it. And, you know, to put that into action.

"So, why don't we go around the room, and everyone can introduce themselves, and share what's going on to make them feel they need to step back and take some time for themselves, plus one thing you do to relax, calm down, or take care of yourself. Then the rest of the period is free to do something relaxing."
