The Danger Shop looked like a cave of wonders today. A cave of battered, broken wonders, often with very suspicious burn marks along with a number of work-benches.

"So I've already taught those of you I recognise about actually finding artifacts," Aphra said clapping her hands together. "But it turns out they're much more valuable when they're not all kinds of broken. Now, when we're talking about artwork and pottery, fixing that is a specialised field that takes years of study, skill, and something resembling talent. Trust me, the results aren't pretty when amateurs try it. Tech, on the other hand, you still need skill for the real tricky stuff, but the bar for entry level fixes is a lot lower."

She waved a hand around the room. "But we'll get to all that later, for now, pick something you think is interesting from the pile. You don't even need to know what it is, but take your time because it's gonna be a project over the semester. Then introduce yourself to the class and explained why you picked it."

Most of the stuff looked unfamiliar, and Breq wasn't really sure how this class would be useful. But eventually she looked like something resembling a large gun. It might be something else, and she hoped it wasn't some kind of alien cleaning equipment.

Mara picked through the pile until she found something a little lightsaber-esque, but with a completely stupid crossguard that looked like it might have shot out beams from each end too.

No wonder people'd stopped using it.

Ringo wasn't really sure what she was digging through all the piles for until she came up with a pair of sort-of boots. The exteriors were cracked, and they had all these wires dangling out of them. There weren't any wheels, so they clearly weren't some form of AirTrek, but maybe they were as awesome?

Who are you and why did you pick that?

"I'm Breq," she said. "I picked this because it looked like it could be useful, if it is what I think it is."

"Depends on what you think it is, new kid." It was probably what she thought it was. Because Aphra.

"A weapon." Breq saw no reason not to be hones about this.

"I prefer the term 'conflict resolution tool', at least as far as public liability is concerned."

That wasn't a no. It was very much not a no.

It was about as descriptive as the way the Radchaai used "annexation" instead of "invasion".

"But it does the same job, regardless of what you call it, doesn't it?"

"If you can get it working, kiddo."

"That's my plan," Breq replied.

Ringo offered a little bow. "My name is Ringo Noyamano." She held up a pair of things that looked mostly like boots if boots had wires sticking out every which way. "These reminded me sort of like ATs from back home, so I want to see if I can fix them and figure out what they actually are."

"What's an AT?" Aphra asked, certainly not looking like she was trying to remember what those actually were.

"Oh!" Ringo perked up. "It's like inline skates, but with motors in them, so way better."

She beamed. "I could show you if you want?" After Ringo's first semester on the island, she'd stopped showing up for class without a pair of ATs in her backpack. Just in case.

"That seems like a...less than safe idea," Aphra said without a single trace of irony.

"It's a great idea, as long as you're, you know, careful?" What could go wrong, after all?

"I'm Mara Jade and this is some kind of weapon designed by an idiot," Mara said.

"Yeah, the Malachor Moron Special," Aphra said. "Some ancient Jedi or Sith didn't care about their fingers too much."

"All the good Jedi have fake hands," Mara deadpanned.

"Can't be that good then." Since she hadn't been guilt-tripped by any Skywalkers lately.

"I'm not a Jedi!" Mara yelped.

Aphra definitely didn't look like someone making a 'possibly a Jedi' mental note next to Mara's name now. At all.

She's a professional!
