Bond looked quite unflustered this afternoon, largely because he had a brilliant poker-face.

"Good afternoon. Given the kind of week this is shaping up to be, I could feign ignorance and have you channel that excess energy into physical exercise." Like certain of his fellow teachers had. "But really we'll all be better off in the long run if I just remind you that there are numerous places on the island you can acquire free or affordable protection and to remember what we talked about last fortnight before giving you the afternoon off."

The other option had been ice swimming, so you could all think Ada's water allergy for the free period.

Class started a little late today. Hardison'd had a little trouble getting out of bed. For reasons.

"Uhh, hey," he said, dashing into the Danger Shop, tugging on his collar. "So, y'all probably know what's up this week. You got any questions about it, you can ask me once class starts. Anyway, I ain't even gonna pretend like anyone's got the focus to try to learn nothin'. So, today?" He hit a button and the room turned into an awesome Go Kart track, with enough karts for everyone. "Just hop in an' go."

Hopefully an hour of zooming around would bleed off some of that energy. Because, damn, it was rough staying focused.

When the students arrived to class today, they'd find the dummies set up as usual, along with all of the weapons they'd already discussed - knives, swords, clubs, sticks, etc.

"Hey guys. Those of you who have been here for a while probably recognize what kind of... er, situation we're dealing with in town right now. If you're new, I apologize for any possibly unwanted feelings the island's hormones are giving you. I wasn't sure how focused everyone would be today, and I thought some of you may have some tension you want to release, so we're going to call this a general practice day. Please don't abuse the Danger Shop's mechanisms, and try to stay safe, okay?"

As the students entered today, they would see the following text scrawled on the chalkboard in Ghanima's neat handwriting:

In making tactical dispositions, the highest pitch you can attain is to conceal them; conceal your dispositions, and you will be safe from the prying of the subtlest spies, from the machinations of the wisest brains. How victory may be produced for them out of the enemy's own tactics--that is what the multitude cannot comprehend.

All men can see the tactics whereby I conquer, but what none can see is the strategy out of which victory is evolved.

Do not repeat the tactics which have gained you one victory, but let your methods be regulated by the infinite variety of circumstances.

"While the joys and effectiveness of a direct attack should never be underestimated, it is important that you do not forget the importance of being devious," Ghanima began briskly. "Tzu often admonishes us to make ourselves unassailable, to maintain a secure position if at all possible. However, even the most secure location can be overcome. "

"He also says, 'The clever combatant imposes his will on the enemy, but does not allow the enemy's will to be imposed on him,'" Tahiri spoke up, wheeling the AV cart up to the front of the classroom. "That's definitely the case if, say, your troops are bunkered down in some well-fortified location. Sure, you're safe, but you've also painted yourself into a corner, and what are you going to do if the enemy forces your hand and draws you out? There goes your advantage; you're not calling the shots any more."

"They don't even really need to draw you out," Ghanima agreed, nodding at Tahiri. "Once you're entrenched, you have no retreat. No way to get supplies or food; no recourse in case of flood, earthquake, or fire."

"I know it's hard for many of you this week," she continued, lips twitching in amusement although not quite giving in to a smile. It was impolitic to find amusement in the yearly 'spring fever,' but sometimes Ghanima was glad that her Preborn-state protected her from such airborne island whimsey. "--but subtlety and secrecy can be a great asset at any time, and especially when you are at war; be it with yourself or others."

Tahiri was not so immune, and it was only by virtue of Jedi training and a lot of concentration that she managed to look more or less unperturbed.

"I'm pretty sure some of you can think of a dozen other things you'd rather expend energy on today than concentrating on a lecture, so I'm sorry to let you all know that you don't get out of class early today," she said lightly, and tapped the side of the TV with one finger. "But it'll be a movie day instead. We thought that would be a reasonable enough compromise."

Granted, the fact that the movie was filled with attractive people might be making things worse, but there wasn't much they could do about that, was there?
