Brian's class was back in the Danger Shop, in a parking lot in LA, empty save for eight matching bright green Mitsubishi Eclipses, one blue one, and an assortment of items spread out on a tarp. "When you have a car, you've gotta take care of your car," Brian told his students. "Which means a few things, but today we're going to be working on changing the oil. There's no reason to pay someone to do it when it's easy to do yourself and that way you know it's done right. So let's get started. Everybody gather around the blue car."

Brian proceeded to walk them through how to change the oil, demonstrating as he went. When he was finished, he asked, "Any questions?" and, after that had been taken care of, "Your assignment for the week: change your oil. Everything you need is on the tarp. This is a race. First person to successfully finish their oil change, start their car, and drive it around the block and back to the lot wins first prize, which is--" He held up a candy bar. "Only catch: the simulation has been programmed so that if you do something wrong on your oil change, your car won't start until you fix it. Your time starts on one, two, three, GO!"

When the students arrived to class, they would find a television and a DVD player set up, along with a note.

Hey guys,

Had a family emergency. Please watch the movie - it's slightly silly but will be good for when we talk about
real ghosts next week.

"All right, so last year, this class tended to focus on the smaller things," Atton began. "But based on your introductions, I'm going to shake it up a little. So welcome to 'how to deal with things - or yourself - being set on fire'."

There was a long beat.

"If you're ever tempted to set anything on fire, no matter how upset, bedraggled, screwed-over or otherwise horrible you feel, do not set anything on fire. I cannot say this enough. Okay? Do not set anything on fire."

Okay? Okay.

On fire. )

And with that, Atton stopped talking. Studied the class. Pursed his lips.

Then added, "And just to emphasize this one last time, because it's important, never set anything on fire, ever, ever, ever." Beat. "Unless you're planning to eat it. But even then I wouldn't risk it."

There had been some delay for... research purposes, but late in the morning, the PA system finally screeched to life and Zoe's voice could be heard.

"Good morning. I'm pleased to announce that the following students will be serving on this year's Student Council:

Alana [microphone feedback], Gwen Stacy, Frank Doyle, Isabela [microphone feedback], Tali'Zorah nar Rayya, Dante [mumbled noises], Eric Bittle, Maria DeLuca, and April [microphone feedback]. Thank you all for volunteering, and I will see you at our first meeting tomorrow during lunch."

It wasn't entirely unheard of that someone might throw a book across the room in reaction to something in it. Cosette knew this; Éponine in particular was guilty of it whenever she read books that were part of a series, and ended on cliffhangers, and she herself had gotten exactly that carried away on a few occasions.

None that she would admit to in front of the library books, though. Especially not today, when one of her tasks was inspecting returns for damage. Luckily the worst of it so far amounted to a few torn corners, a fraying binding or two, and a telltale round brown stain where someone had clearly put a coffee mug on top of the book.

"You'll be all right," Cosette told the coffee-stained book, patting its spine lightly. "I'm afraid I can't do anything to take the stain out, but you're all right otherwise, and I promise it won't make anyone want you any less."

Because of course she was the sort to give books motivational pep talks.

[OOC: The OCD forgot to set its alarm this morning. 'tis open.]
