"Nature walk," Reno announced, just as soon as his students filed into the Danger Shop. Today's scenario? A nice, wooded path. Possibly even Fandom's own Preserve, though access to town was well and truly out of the way. "Because you're not gonna be inside near ready-made sharp pointy things or explosives every time something attacks. Some days, you'll be right out in the middle of friggin' nowhere, rookies, and you'll have to make do with a stick or a pointy rock, or whatever bit of litter some asshole decided to leave sitting in the middle of the woods."

As if on cue, a few little gnomes came crawling out of the undergrowth, peering up curiously at the passers-by. They didn't seem like much at first - just tiny men with beards and overalls and pointy caps on their heads. But it became apparent before long that there were more than just a few. One gnome looked thoughtfully at the group of students, pointed at the lot of them, and then started shouting.

"Queeeeens!"

It did not take long before the rest of the little gnomes were all pointing and chanting the same.

And then... well, then, they started to swarm, reaching for arms and legs and shoelaces and anything they could possibly get a hold of, in order to rudely and roughly drag everybody they could find back into the forest. Probably so that they could marry them.

Might want to do something about that.

Well, the corrupted program issue had been fixed, thankfully, because the usual let's-microwave-stuff-we-shouldn't classroom setup was back today. Along with several cans of air freshener spray, because today's experiment was bound to be a little on the unpleasantly smelling side.

"Today's task is to microwave something typically used to store information- a compact disc." If you asked Thor, these discs didn't look very compact at all, but whatever. Midgard was strange. "You will notice I've provided you with a can of scented air- this is because the results are likely to smell unpleasant, so you may wish to release some of the scented air once you have opened your microwave to observe your results."

"Since we're quickly beginning to approach the end of the summer, I thought it might be worth it to examine the opposite end of the questions I asked you at the start," Ender said. "Specifically, how much have you changed since you got here? How do you see your future, on the island or off? Has the island been an interruption in your life, to be skipped past and left there once you graduate? Or has it forged lasting changes that will stick with you in the times ahead?"

He smiled briefly.

"I realize this isn't a particularly philosophical series of questions," he said. "But it's something worth reflecting on, not just with me, but between yourselves. I have a feeling your viewpoints will be as diverse as you are."

He sat back.

"But to pull it larger: do you think there's a shared experience here on this island? Something similar we all take away from it? Or none at all?"

"Hello!" Josh screamed over the sound of tiny, hyperactive children. "Welcome to the most basic of customer service options for teenagers who don't want to mow lawns: babysitting!" He gestured around the room as the children ran in shrieking, overstimulated circles.

"These guys have just eaten a stash of leftover Halloween candy and washed it down with diet soda," he added helpfully, "and are supposed to be sleeping in fifteen minutes so....good luck with that. There's a reason I never had kids and this is about 90 percent of it."

Thanks, Josh.
