This week, the Danger Shop had been set up to look like Tokyo. Again. But unlike the cheerful, sunshiney 70s version from a couple classes ago, this one looked like it had survived the apocalypse, with blocks full of rubble and half-destroyed buildings.

"Welcome to Neo Tokyo!" Prof Tomoe said. "As you can see, it's a bit of a mess. Massive explosions and global wars tend to do that."

He leaned against one of the dozen or so futuristic motorcycles set up in around the area the class was in. "It's also the home reality of Dr Onishi, a scientist working with the Metropolitan government on the Akira Project. His main interest is in ESP and the potential of enhancing psychic powers in potential test subjects." He grinned. "No matter how you go about doing that."

There was an ominous rumble somewhere nearby. Prof Tomoe ignored it and kept on talking.

"Unfortunately, most of the societal dregs they kidnap to experiment on simply die. And their successful case is even worse."

A building across the street blew apart, and a hideous, misshapen blob of a man emerged from it. He must have been normal looking once, with spikey black hair and a red cape tied around his neck, but now he was a mess of pulsing, rippling flesh and metal.

"And there would be be Mr Tetsuo now. You're going to want to do something before he tries to kill you."

The students were in the Danger Shop today, which was set up with the gun range from a few weeks ago on one side, and some sparring mats on the other. "I figure after the weekend, some of us-" Her. "-might want to get a little frustration out still, so it's going to be kind of a sparring day today. Go ahead and pick a partner, hit each other, and if you'd rather go solo today, you can go ahead and practice at the range.

"Also," she added, as she saw a little blue donkey go running towards a red elephant out of the corner of her eye, "please don't step on the animals."

Anakin watched a little sourly as a small blue donkey and an equally small red elephant tried to beat each other to death with campaign placards on his desk before class began.

"Politics," he in the same tone most people used for talking about sexually transmitted infections. "The country we are living in right now is electing their political leaders today: their president, members of their legislative body, and members of the local governments. Most people running have aligned themselves with two major political parties: a liberal one that believes in a strong centralized government that helps to take care of the population, and a conservative one that believes in distributing powers to the local moffs--" not what they're called here, Anakin, "--whenever possible and trusting that the local areas would know best how to help their populations. The nation is divided 50-50 in national polls and the arguments have become loud, screechy, and frequent in questioning the personal ethics of the person who holds the opposite opinion."

He began pacing. "My questions are these: do you believe it is possible to create a sustainable, ethical government? If so, is it through a democracy? Would it be easier to just chuck the entire thing and establish a benevolent dictatorship?"

Anakin, your Vader is showing...
