Once changing-into-jumpsuits-and-boots was done and students filtered past the obligatory sign through the circular sliding doors, they'd be watched by the usual wall-mounted video camera with its blinking red light, just inside the starting area of the chamber. A quick glance would show that it was a fairly large room, albeit partitioned off into several sections by floor-to-ceiling safety glass panels and one floor-to-ceiling Material Emancipation Grill. It was probably also pretty hard not to notice the long, bright orange smear of gel on the floor, bordered by a stripe of blue repulsion gel on the edge of a pool of that gross-looking water.
"Congratulations on remembering how to make it back here for yet another consecutive week," GLaDOS said snippily. "I'm waiting for the day when you collectively forget and break your streak. You're statistically due for it any time soon."
That wasn't true. She hadn't actually run any statistical analyses on that possibility.
"Or, who knows, you could have a complete, spontaneous case of amnesia and forget everything you ever learned in these sessions, possibly right in the middle of something especially dangerous," she continued, sounding disturbingly fond of the idea. "Since today's test involves practical application of vertical movement and velocity in conjunction with portals, the 'something dangerous' is guaranteed today, anyway. Try not to break everything."
She paused, just long enough for the camera's LED to flicker twice.
"In the test chamber, that is. Unlike you, this room isn't designed to be easily breakable. Good luck."
Somehow, that 'good luck' never sounded genuine, did it?
