Alex was, thankfully, not green today. And she was even in a good mood, thanks to socializing, beer, and Tyra Banks. Stranger things had happened, but not many.

"Today," Alex said, "we're going to talk about international relations. Thus far we've been focusing on getting your own country up and running, and how to maintain order and promote the welfare of your citizens. But your country is part of a larger, global community, and you'll have to deal with fitting your country into the established framework. Other countries won't want to give up their sovereign rights, and won't necessarily care what it is that you want."

She lifted a shoulder. "Your country should never compromise its own integrity, to bow to foreign interests, but there's no need to alienate all of your neighbors, either. Where, in the middle, do you meet, in the interests of keeping the peace?"

"Welcome back, children," Jane, feeling a bit better this week, gave the student a smile and a nod, chalk in hand when class was ready to begin. "I hope you enjoyed the film from last week. I know such media presentations can hardly take the place as a good old-fashioned intriguing lecture and all, but hopefully you'll forgive me that one indiscretion. Today, I'd like to discuss some of the topics in the film, especially the topic of the conservation of both primates and their environments, and why it is so important.

"So, today will seem very simple, but the topic is so very important. I'd like to just discuss why you think it's important to help conserve the primate environment. Or perhaps you don't. If you don't, I'm afraid you're quite wrong about that, but if you've got thoughts on why not, well, that's all part of a discussion, I suppose. Are there things you yourself can do to help this primate plight? Or is it too large of a problem to stop?

Cassidy was relieved to find that the library was in a state of peace today. There didn't seem to be any squabbles of any kind going on in the stacks. She was convinced that it was because the different armies had taken her threats of shielding them and putting them in the children's section for a few hours quite seriously.

After she took care of any of the shelving and straightening that needed to be done, she withdrew to the desk with a few books on Akido -- and a travel book about Baltimore.

This could only end well. Really.

Around the Danger Shop today, there were the contents of flatpack furniture boxes from the Isle of Ikea strewn across the floor. There were several piles of what would be furniture when it was assembled.

"Today you're going to help something that you may or may not recognise as sentient. These may look like ordinary pieces of furniture waiting to be assembled. In actual fact, they're alive in most senses of the word. They may not be able to speak, but they do have thoughts and feelings and hopes and dreams and goals. You're going to help them achieve their goal. They want to be whole. Of course, when you approach them, they're not going to know that your intentions are good or that you mean to help them. You're going to help them reach their full potential as furniture anyway. Collect your Allen key sets and get to it!"

As was usual, the class met in the Danger Shop, on a simulation of a pirate ship.

Today there was another ship, pressed up next to the pirate vessel. The boarding planks were out, and the vessel the students were on was primed to storm its new, trapped neighbor.

For he is a Pirate King! )
