Cassidy hadn't walked in to any merry little book wars this morning and for that, she was very grateful.

She shelved books and then cleaned up anything that looked out of place. Once everything was straightened up, she went to certain sections with a single minded determination.

Once she got back to the desk, she had a book on baking, one on chemistry, one on Latin and one on Tai Chi.

Peace reigned in the library today and Cassidy was cheerful as ever.

Probably because she hadn't yet had anything to drink today. She was blissfully ignorant about today's holiday.

Alex had a cup of tea with her as she entered class, and was dunking the tea bag thoughtfully. She had yet to drink any. You could tell by the rosy glow of her non-green skin.

"Deceptively simple topic this week," Alex said. "Do your citizens have any say about law-making? Let's say there's a dangerous practice going around, and your citizens lobby to have it outlawed. Do you listen? You're the ruler, after all. It's your say.

"What if it's not a dangerous practice so much as a morally objectionable one? Or one that some people condemn on religious grounds? Or, conversely, an activity that a particular religion promotes, which others outside the religion object to, such as ritual scarring or animal sacrifice."

She took a sip of her tea. "This could be anything from drug use, to sexual activity, to something like driving while intoxicated -- or while texting on a phone. The people in your land want something to be outlawed, or they want to allow something that you, in your infinite wisdom, have deemed to be illegal, for whatever reason. How much weight to you put on public opinion?

"Democracy is supposed to be by the people, for the people, and of the people -- not that any of you are constrained to leading democracies -- but at the same time, you're obliged to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority. Which means --"

Alex broke off abruptly, staring at her hands. "Am I green?"

"Hello, class," Jane's usual smile was a little muted today as she greeted the students when they got settled. "I'm terribly sorry to have to do this with you today, but I'm afraid I've come down with a bit of a bug and I'm in absolutely no condition to offer a lecture today. Luckily, though, there are all sorts of glorious technologies that can offer a suitable lesson in my stead, and I've even managed to figure out how to work the darn bloody thing, too!

"So today, I'd like you to watch this film about the gorillas of Africa and some of the brave actions taken to help preserve their habitat and those who dedicate themselves to their study and preservation. Please take whichever notes you'd like, and next week we'll have a discussion about some of the topics covered in the film. Now, if someone would please get the lights, and we'll begin."

When Alex sat down with his lunch, he spent a good long while staring at the green orange juice. He sniffed it and while it smelled like orange juice, it bore no resemblance to anything green so, naturally, Alex was wary. He didn't think any of the cafeteria people had a reason to seek vengeance against him so he was going to chalk it up to St. Patrick's Day and the cafeteria staff being into the holiday.

So, he took a sip and was satisfied to realize it was just green colored orange juice. Fine, the cafeteria staff were a bunch of smartasses who thought this was funny. Whatever, his juice was still good and Alex would let the staff slide on this one.

And that was then he saw that his hand was slowly turning green. "What the fu -- " His other hand? Doing the same thing. He tried to brush off the coloring but the green just got deeper and deeper. Alex didn't even want to think about how the rest of him must look because his arms were completely green.

"What the hell?!"

Great, he was green and he was in public. That was perfect.

The Doctor was waiting outside the Danger Shop for everyone today. As they arrived, he handed them each a red football jersey suited for their size. "Put those on. Football, or soccer, is a sport or a religion on Earth depending on who you're talking to, where on the planet you are and which era you're visiting. You're all going to learn a blatant lesson today about how no matter where you go and what sort of trouble you get yourselves into, there are going to be people who will judge you by how you look rather than what you have to say. The lesson is about why it's wrong, not how to do the same, in case anyone hasn't caught on. Once you have your shirt on, in you go. Mind the locals."

Inside the Danger Shop was a pub. A British pub, actually. It was busy, the beer was flowing, the patrons were largely inebriated and there was a football match on the big screen TVs around the place between the blue-shirted local team and the red-shirted team that the students were now apparently supporters of due to their attire.

Their arrival drew the attention of the blue-shirted supporters, who it seemed didn't take very kindly to the opposition ruining their party.

When everyone was in the darkened classroom today, Lucas hit the play button on a remote control.

On a TV screen was Lucas, laying down and looking sad as an attractive young woman held his hands. "It's time, Isabella. I've held on for as long as I can but... *cough* I just don't have the strength anymore."

"Oh, Jayden," the attractive blonde said. "These last few weeks.... I never felt I could love again after the cancer set in. But you showed me... I don't have to be afraid to love anymore."

"Every moment you have left here on Earth should be filled with love," 'Jayden' said. "It's what I did. And trust me, Isabella.... *cough* it's been pretty great."

"I know," 'Isabella' said before starting to cry. "I was there with you."

"*cough* One last time, Isabella... kiss me... I'm dying..."

Isabella leaned down to give Jayden one final kiss before he gently succumbed to whatever fatal illness it was that he was suffering from. Probably cancer. When Isabella lifted her head, tears streaming down her face, she said, "I'll love you until the day I die. And when I do, let's hope there's a Heaven so we can be together again."

Lucas hit the stop button and turned the lights back on. "It's okay to cry. I know, it's very emotional," Lucas said, wiping away a single manly tear from his manly face. "So that's what you're doing today; dying. And take it from a guy who actually died recently, you don't get to go out with an emotional scene in real life, so make this one count."

"I went ahead and put a bunch of causes of death in a hat and pulled them out for each of you. Figure out how you want to play out your death from that cause, then come up here and start pretending to die already and give your final little speech. And don't worry, nobody expects you do be as good as I was in Let's Hope There's a Heaven. You're not professionals."

And then he handed out the slips of paper telling everyone what they were dying of.

I had help coming up with the the deaths. The RNG assigned deaths to the people. I'm technically blameless. )
