Technically speaking, Gabrielle was here today; she just happened to be latching onto any excuse necessary to head into the stacks and reshelve books, or check on the coffee supply, or investigate some nonexistent noise.

If whatever was getting to everyone else on the island today was affecting her too, she was a little too lost in her own thoughts to notice at the moment.

So the library was open, and the Monday aide was on duty . . . if a little scarce.

Don’t check your calenders. It certainly was Monday, despite the classroom where Kappa Kappa Gremlin typically met looked a bit more like it was set up for the fighting reserves. But. for some odd reason, Zack and Alexander were having a feeling that, perhaps, some focus should be spent on releasing some energy in...alternative ways. Thus, there was a wide assortment of Nerf weapons, from crossbows to swords to little foam dart guns, spread out on one table, while the usual snacks and offerings were available on the other.

Alexander cleared his throat. “Welcome back, guys. I’ve got good news; there will hopefully be no singing today. Instead, Zack and I were thinking we could let out some, er....aggression with some fun harmless weapons. Er. Because they’re fun. And, uh, besides, it might always be good to know how to fight, even with...um,...foam things.”

Naturally, Zack had snatched up the biggest Nerf sword he could find, because some things just never changed, freaky hormonal sex-pollen or no.

“I’m pretty sure you guys aren’t going to be able to hurt one another with these things,” he noted, resting his foamy sword over one shoulder, “but at least try not to put anyone’s eye out with these things, okay? Other than that? Just have fun!”

Yep, just like that. Smack one another with foam, guys.

It was healthy.

Max suspected that most of his students were going to pick up on the topic for today's class rather quickly since guns tended to be pretty obvious and recognizable, and there was a large locker full of them against one wall in addition to the ones on his desk. Everything from matchlock pistols to modern sniper rifles.

"Today we're going to be discussing one of the most revolutionary shifts in the history of weapons. I suspect most of you can guess what that is. Gunpowder, and more specifically the gun, represent a fundamental change in the equation of war. That change comes from the fact that gunpowder uses chemistry to provide the energy to kill people with, and that means that it doesn't really care how strong you are personally."

"Swords, clubs, axes, and all the other hand weapons merely enhance your innate strength. So that while everyone becomes more dangerous, someone with my size and strength becomes that much more dangerous. In a serious fight with swords, I don't think any of you could overcome my physical advantages." Though, this was Fandom, someone might surprise him. And Max wasn't about to make any bets where Zach was concerned, either.

"This is just as true with thrown knives and spears, and remains true, though to a lesser extent, with things like bows and crossbows. Your personal strength controls how powerful a bow or crossbow you can draw, and it especially controls how quickly you can reload. So while any of you could get a crossbow powerful enough to kill someone, it might be difficult to reload for some of you, so you'd only get one shot."

"Gunpowder changed all that. Since the power it can deliver doesn't depend on how strong you are, it puts everyone on an even playing field. Any of you could fire a gun big enough to kill me, for instance. I might be able to absorb more damage than some people simply due to my size, but a shot to the heart or the head is going to deliver enough force that it won't matter."

"This fundamental shift in who can kill who means that I can't tell you what to do just because I'm bigger and stronger than you because, if you want to, you can kill me. I can no longer act with impunity. And you don't even have to be in particularly good shape or have much in the way of training, either. On the other hand, killing becomes much easier for everyone, and for any reason."

Max's eyes scanned the room slowly. "I know that I make a big deal about safety in this class, but today I want you all to be clear on just how big a deal it's become." Even if the danger shop's safety protocols were in effect. "Accidents with guns are often fatal for the same reason they change things so much: they're always at full power, and that power is always enough to kill."

"So, today's activity is simple. Find a gun you've never used before." And for many of his students Max figured that might be 'any of them'. "Try it out on range at the back of the room. After you've gotten familiar with your weapon, find someone who's picked something completely different and swap impressions. Get a feel for just how broad a category of weapons this is."

"Bonjour," Sookie said, and if her voice sounded a little distracted, it was perhaps because she hadn't ever really noticed how attractive her classmates were. Especially Emma. "Emma, may I just say, your hair is looking really, really nice today. Very soft," she said, kind of forgetting the topic at hand today. "I wish I could get my hair that...shiny."

"Thank you, ma mie," Emma replied. "Tu as de très beaux yeux."

Why was her concentration so flighty today? It was like everywhere Emma looked, there was something shiny to catch her attention, like Sookie's eyes. They were very pretty...

Right. Focus. "So. We're here to work on French."

Sookie cleared her throat. "Yes. French." French...language. Right. Not French anything else. And see, now her thoughts were wandering again. "Anyway. Y'all look lovely today. We're gonna talk about how to say so."

"If someone calls you their 'little cabbage' or 'tiny flea,' it's not an insult, believe it or not," Emma agreed. "So go around and come up with a pet-name for your classmates. It could be fun."

Pheromones.

A specific type of them. Kerrigan had smelled it since the moment she stepped anywhere near close to another human being that morning, and it was mildly disgusting. Her own system had filtered them out - Zerg physiology being what it was - but with these kids...

... well, there was a reason why they were meeting in a rainforest in the Danger Shop. Rain was pouring down from the sky at an alarming pace, in fact. Because Kerrigan was considerate like that, she'd laid out some raincoats, but that was about that.

"This isn't really macro-level," she said, idly, "But it might get you some insights on battlefield mechanics. For each of you, there's a duplicate somewhere in this woods. Well, 'duplicate' - they'll have your measurements, and they'll be identifiable by colour," she nodded at the differently-shaded strips she'd had the TAs hand out, "...but I'm not interested in pitting you against anything with your face."

Interesting experiment as that might have been.

"You have, as before, five minutes to discuss tactics. Work together, work individually, I don't care. Your goal is to take out your duplicate in whatever manner possible. Go."

When Jaina figured out she still felt just as restless as she had yesterday, and then she heard radio, she figured she should maybe rethink today's class. Rather than making them learn something that might frustrate anyone, she'd just let them choose their own comfort level. "I'm going to take a wild guess and say most of you probably have some energy to burn off. So today we're going to have a bit of a refresher class. Choose a ship we've covered, and I don't care if you just want to redo a simulation you've done before to get some extra practice, or if you just want to blow something to bits. Sometimes that's cathartic.

"Oh," Jaina added, "and if I see anyone doing more than making googly-eyes at each other in my class, I have a water pistol and I will hose you down."
