When students entered their Etiquette classroom today, they might notice two things that differed from the usual. One was that Miss Elizabeth Bennet had enlisted the help of an assistant this week, a polite gentleman named Dr. Simon Tam. The second item which might attract attention was the fact that Miss Bennet was somewhat flushed this week, and fanning herself, while carefully trying to avoid Dr. Tam's eyes.

Miss Bennet had terrible timing ... )

When the students entered the classroom today, they might, if they weren't too distracted by their own issues, notice that their teacher looked a little more disgruntled than usual today. He also looked cold. And wet.

Somebody had realized that it would be a very good idea to take a long, cold shower before work today, yes.

"Depression," Algren began, leaping directly into the lecture and apparently thankful that today's item on the syllabus was the most mood-killing one this term, "is probably the most common and definitely the most noticeable stage of culture shock. It tends to settle in around the edges, even while you're experiencing the other symptoms, and often manifests itself as a feeling of hopelessness and longing. It seems by that point that the only way to deal with it is to leave where you're at, go back home, and forget that you ever had the insane notion to leave in the first place."

Speaking from experience? Oh, yes.

"It doesn't have to be severe. It isn't always rational or even immediately explicable. But it can do a great deal of emotional and mental damage until it's overcome. A person might opt out of leaving home in order to socialize, or even to buy food. They might start doubting everything that they do, including tasks that are still familiar to them from home, while they're in their new surroundings. Know that none of you are inferior, simply different, and that if the insanity of Fandom Island is making you doubt yourself? We're all in the same boat on this one."

Pacing? Algren? How could he not?

"I've organized a couple of handouts on coping with depression. Look at them. Keep them, in-case you're feeling it yourself in this new environment. And discuss." Pause. "Keep it clean. And if anyone mentions crocodiles to me today? Detention. For life."

Probably not for life.

[OCD on the way. Class is up. Have at thee!]

"Stupid short lady," Claudia muttered to herself as she wobbled into the library in ridiculously slutty high heels. "I look awesome. There's nothing wrong with flaunting what you've got."

She sat down in a chair, smoothing her slip dress (which was really a slip) over the tiny bit of leg it covered, then picked up a copy of People magazine and began to read.

[OOC: The OCD ran off with Claudia's remaining sense of dignity.]

Abby Irene was distinctly uncomfortable today. She couldn't quite focus on what she was supposed to be teaching and as the students filed in, had to admit that she wanted nothing more than to go find Murdock and drag him into a closet.

...well, a bed really, but she thought a closet would be easier to find.

That would be why today's class was, well, a little informal.

"Today is going to be an active day for you all," she said, realizing only after it was out of her mouth what it could sound like.

"In short, you're going to go through a list of things you need to do what you do, no matter what they might be" and that went out to a few people probably knew who they were, "and I'm going to ask you to try and figure out what you could substitute for that thing.

"If you use ingredients, figure out what might happen if you don't have them around. If you use words, imagine you can't speak. If you use thoughts, imagine that your mind has been clouded. Regardless of how you work magick, I'd like to see you consider how you would act if it was impossible for you to use a vital component of your spellwork."

[ocd up!]
