screwyoumarvel: (Steve's thinking of making out with you)
[personal profile] screwyoumarvel
"Let's do something completely innocent today," Steve said enthusiastically, "to cleanse our minds of, er, what Mr. Stark inflicted on you all. I am so sorry. But today we're going to flirt. The hallmarks of successful flirtation are going to be different in every incidence. One person you're trying to flirt with may respond very well to a compliment on their hair, while another may think they're having a bad hair day and that you're patronizing them. While it's important to be aware of these things just as a generalized part of not being a jerk to people, the most important rule of flirting is to just be yourself. So, pair up, start flirting, switch partners if you like, whatever. Remember, if you've got a significant other already or something, this is just practice. No harm, no foul. Have fun."

Jean-Paul was kicked back today, feet up on his desk, very casual. "Let us do...public relations today," he said, as if he was picking the topic out of the air. "If you cannot get along with the public, your business is screwed. So. Each of you is to come up with a hypothetical PR disaster that might be visited on your company, and tell me how you would deal with it. You have the rest of the class period to work and brainstorm with one another. Have fun."

Having handwavily sent an E-mail to the class telling them to meet in the Danger Shop today, the place was set up much like a television studio. A real one, not just something Dana had thrown together in her classroom.

"Okay," said Dana when class began. "'The best laid plans of mice and men oft go awry.' You've probably heard it, and it's true. You can plan an plan and plan something, and at the last second, it's guaranteed to go wrong. For this, we blame a guy named Murphy, and his stupid Law: whatever can go wrong, will. Or sometimes we blame Thespis. Don't ask. And what do you do when something goes wrong? You deal with it," she said. "When you're working in an environment like this, you can't have something bad happen and shrug and go 'oh well.' It might require a super quick fix. Do you cover for it, do you acknowledge the mistake, do you smile and nod and pretend it never happened? Tehe truth is, there is no right answer. You just have to know how to roll with the punches and go with it somehow, because you just have to get through it and then it's over and you can laugh about it later, or go out for a lot of drinks later if it was really bad. I didn't just say that to a high school class and anyone who says I did is lying.

"Today you're going to get a scenario. You may be the director, you may be an anchor, it'll depend on each one. You're right at showtime, and you have to solve the problem. Just show me what you do to get out of it," she said. "Now get to it."

[And a note, class, please check out this post for info on next week's class.]

"I'm deviating from the syllabus again," Ghanima announced from her perch on her desk, legs kicking against its front lightly as the students filed in. "Mostly because I am quite bored with it right now."

"So instead of Anna I of Russia, we're going to skip to a different Anna; Anna of Saxony, a woman that was not very good at dealing with limits."

Madness is tonic and invigorating. It makes the sane more sane. The only ones who are unable to profit by it are the insane. )

After pinning some sample works to the blackboard, Claire put the usual array of paints, chalk, pencils, paper and crayons (and a few cheap cameras) on the supplies table, then sat down to wait for the club to show up.

Once everyone seemed to be there, she said, "Hey. I think today feels like a day for portraits. You can sketch yourself, or pair up and draw each other, or do some group triad thing, whatever works. Try to make it more than I think we're in good shape on Art Crawl, but let me know if you have questions about your part or if you wanna sign up for more work. Anything else?"

On the door of the usual classroom was a very neat, orderly and professional sign:

The weekly meeting of the
Young Entrepreneurs
has been canceled today due to the coinciding Girls with Guns field trip.
Apologies for any inconvenience;
there are still coffee and donuts in the classroom if you'd like, anyway.
--T.R. Wexler--

[[ the meeting is officially canceled for today, but if any members want to stick around and eat donuts (or pie) and mingle, that is very encouraged! ]]

Another thrilling chapter in the life of Cal Stephanides, waking up early on a Monday morning, filling his mug with disproportionate amounts of sugar, cream, and coffee (in that order from greatest to least), and then opening the library.

Truly, he was astounded by the excitement of his life.

Actually, he rather preferred this, however sarcastic his narrative may be.

And he might actually finish something for the newspaper today. Nonfiction, of course, but it would be what Rikku had asked for all the same.
