"Last week we started doing investigative reports. By now you should have a subject, some research, and an idea of what you're going to write about," Jonah said. And then the bell rang. "Now it's time to work with one of the journalist's biggest obstacles, the deadline."

"You only have until the end of the class period to get this article written up, so here's some advice: first, get to your point quickly. If you don't do a good job of getting your main point across with some of your best evidence to support it within the first paragraph or two, you'll probably lose the reader to a more interesting article, for one, and you might not get a chance to get everything you want to in before your deadline comes up and that means you've wasted your time researching, for two. That said, you should have collected enough information to fill the rest of the article with interesting bits. If you didn't, it'll be clear that you're just writing b.s. as filler. At least it'll be clear to your editor. Readers might be too distracted by something shiny to realize that you did a crap job. Anyway, if you have good research, keep checking to see how you can fit more information in before you run out of time. And be sure to save the last five to ten minutes to wrap it up and get your conclusion written. That's five to ten depending on your writing speed, how complex your conclusion is, how much you want to get in there, and whatever other things that might eat up a minute or two as you go along."

"Okay, forty seven minutes and fifteen seconds to get your investigative reports written and turned in to me! Anything that's handed in after the bell is an F! Get to work!"

Thursdays, of course, meant anyone could find Ned in the Home Ec classroom after classes, getting all set up for the club. Today, he'd spent a few minutes beforehand setting up and now he was just waiting for everyone to arrive.

"Afternoon, guys," he greeted with a nod. "Good to see you, hope everyone's having a good week. And if you haven't put in a bid in the cheerleading auction, you should. Just don't bid on Kaylee because I, uh, kinda wanna win her. Not that she's property but...I want to win her."

Shush, Ned.

"Anyway, back to cooking. Today, we're gonna do a little bit of an open exercise. I've got lots of moddable ingredients over there. You get to choose what to cook. The only guideline is that it has to be your favorite late night snack. So, if you like popcorn, cook up some popcorn. If you're a fan of a club sandwich, make up one of us. Pizza? That's your exercise. It's up to you. But, at one point or another, we all get a late night craving that can't be ignored. It's good to know how to cook something and how long it takes before cooking it. Have fun and hope it's good!"

With that, Ned went to his own station to start prepping, what else, a pie.

"Today is guest lecture day," Tyler announced after the students were more or less in their seats. If the class had eyes, they would have already noticed there was a third man with their teachers this morning, so, really, he was just confirming the obvious. But he wasn't feeling great; it was a good day for stating the obvious and reading from his notecards. "And, as your syllabus will tell you, it's also World War II day."

So Tyler Durden, Nathan Algren and Steve Rogers walk into a classroom... )

"As you might have guessed from the syllabus," she said as they filed in, "today, we'll be covering the various alphabets and symbologies used in many forms of magic. I admit, of course, that my own studies deal mostly with Teutonic systems. I find them... rather straightforward. I suppose you could almost say it like programming a computer. The Egyptian mysticism, as well as some of the more esoteric branches of the Jewish faith, have their obvious charms, but for the purposes of this lecture, I will end our overview with a focus on runes and runic work. Of course, understand that the languages listed here are not even a fraction of what's out there. I'm mostly presenting a few different kinds as examples. You'll need to research some more to really get an idea of how many different languages have been utilized over the years for thaumaturgic study.

And so she went... )

Miss Bennet was in a particularly bright mood as she sorted papers into three piles on her desk.

"Today," she said, "I am a particularly cruel Literature teacher; I am going to make you read. Fear not, there is a purpose to it, although as your literature teacher, I am honor-bound to inform you that there is always a purpose to reading. Entertainment, education, whiling away a few hours: all these reasons are quite important. I digress. I assure you, the reading today is light, and it is my hope that you will find it to be worthwhile."

"Sorry about last week," Rikku said breezily. "I had a chocobo-shaped boyfriend and some class assignments and my brain is like a sieve. I brought extra donuts as a form of apology."

Or bribery. Either way. Donuts made everything better.

"So what's up?"
