Cal had family-centric holidays out of the way (for at least a few weeks, anyway). He had some sugar with coffee and cream in it. He had a book on the history of Mediterranean sea warfare.

Cal was not going to let anything prevent him from having a damn good day today.

...well...

...mostly anything.

Mike sipped hot cocoa out of his thermos as he waited outside of the Danger Shop for the students to join him. "Extra credit for anyone who can figure out how to brew a cup of coffee when your taps give you cocoa instead of water," he announced once they were all there.

"Today, we're going to be discussing flight. I'm sure you kids from the future have flown stuff that is way more elaborate than anything that I can show you, so we're going old school and flying a simulation of the Wright Flyer, the first powered aircraft built by the Wright Brothers," said Mike, leading the students into the Danger Shop.

"What made the Wright Brothers successful was their understanding of the three axes of control needed to fly an aircraft," Mike added. "The flight dynamics handout I'm giving you will explain it a bit better, but be sure you climb into the Flyer and play with the controls to see how they affect the pitch, yaw and roll."

"Finally, I do want to say something about the feud between the Smithsonian Institution and Orville Wright. Even though the Wright Flyer is acknowledged as the first heavier-than-air craft to achieve controlled flight, the Smithsonian gave credit to another man who was connected to the institution as the first to build a successful aircraft. This wasn't true, as that aircraft's first successful flight was years after the Wright brothers made their first flight. Orville responded by refusing to give the historic 1903 flyer to the Smithsonian until they retracted their inaccurate claims and the aircraft was displayed at the London Science Museum before finally returning to the U.S. after Orville's death. History is written by those who are in power, and sometimes they get it wrong for the sake of their own agenda. It's something to keep in mind as we look at the historical development of all these engineering achievements," said Mike.

"Okay, I've talked long enough. Go check out the Wright Flyer and have fun."

She was just putting her things onto her desk and unwrapping the scarf from her shoulders as the class walked in. She looked over the assembled and let them filter into their seats before she was ready to speak and once they had, leaned against her desk to start.

"Nearly done, nearly done, aren't we?" she said with a soft and almost sad little smile.

"Today, we will not be discussing metal nor laboratory work; instead, we will be discussing alchemy as a spiritual and psychological tool. )"

Sam was beaming as the class who had been handwavily notified of the change in classroom location showed up outside the flight simulator. "Hello! Today, we'll be discussion aeronautics, in particular the branch of science known as aerodynamics, or the study of the interaction between air and a solid object, hopefully creating flight.

She passed out a number of handouts, which were as usual filled with complicated mathematical formulae, and concentrating in particular on the discussion of the laws of conservation, the new vocabulary, and the different types of flows. "Today, you'll be learning that there can be a useful purpose to all this math and science. You'll be flying various American military aircraft, and you can either fly against one other person in a run, or combat situation, or you can just practice your flying, landings, or takeoffs, or just fly around and look at the moddable American scenery, circa 2008. If there's anyone here who has never been up in a plane before, I'd be happy to take you up, if that would make you more comfortable."

Sam rattled off the rules of using the sim next. "No eating or drinking in the room or the cockpit--if you've just eaten, no breaking the sound barrier or performing barrel rolls. If you break the rules and throw up, you get to clean it up, or deal with Professor Skywalker. Any questions?"

"There's a very famous story on this world," Anakin began. "Of the lady or the tiger. For those of you not from this world, the short version is there was a fictional king with his own sense of justice: instead of a court system, he had an arena with two doors. Behind one door was a beautiful woman, handpicked by the king. Behind the other was a tiger. If you chose the tiger, you were eaten and declared guilty. If you chose the lady, you were considered innocent and married the lady. The king didn't care about your previous marital status or sexual orientation, apparently."

He began pacing. "One day the king discovered that his daughter had been having an affair with someone far below her station, so the man was arrested and tossed into the arena. Now the princess knew which door has what behind it, and her lover looked up to her for advice. She had two choices: watch her love die, or marry another woman. The story ends with the princess telling him which door to open, but leaves us hanging as to what waited behind it."

Anakin smiled. "Your task today is two-fold. First, pair up with a classmate and decide what the princess did. Then tell me what you would have done in the princess's place."
