Basics of Alchemy - Period Five, Monday - 12/01
She was just putting her things onto her desk and unwrapping the scarf from her shoulders as the class walked in. She looked over the assembled and let them filter into their seats before she was ready to speak and once they had, leaned against her desk to start.
"Nearly done, nearly done, aren't we?" she said with a soft and almost sad little smile.
"Today, we will not be discussing metal nor laboratory work; instead, we will be discussing alchemy as a spiritual and psychological tool.
"While one might scoff at the idea of turning a base metal to gold in the physical sense, the application of the alchemical experiments of transforming base, worthless metals into precious gold unconsciously reflects an internal developmental process which one can use to attain wholeness and health, the peak of one's potential.
"Alchemy's rich symbolic content and imagery, in which the physical and the spiritual and or mental intertwine, is one ripe for the use of one looking to better oneself. The Ancient Greek alchemists, those we covered earlier in the class, were well aware of this duality of use. While some might question the need for the physical, one need only to look at our myths and legends, the metals and plans we've discussed in this class throughout the semester to realize just how deeply ingrained in our psyches is the link between physical components and certain near-universal ideas.
"So today, I'd like you all to take your time and consider some ways which you could use the alchemical concepts, symbols, etc, to better yourself."
