This week, the class met in the Danger Shop, which was set up to look like a large room containing a supercomputer.

"Hope you guys had a great time this weekend, especially if you had friends or family visiting. I know that the visits I got were rather eye-opening," said Mike. "Now, I know y'all have worked with modern personal computers and probably stuff that's a lot more advanced than I could ever dream of. But to understand how good you guys have it now, you've got to understand that back in the day, computers looked something like this. Take a look around at NASA's Columbia supercomputer and just imagine that one day, they'll be able to squeeze all of this into something the size of a fingernail."

He quickly passed out an extra handout once they were done exploring. "Once last order of business before we wrap up for the day. Read through this essay that Bill Gates wrote and tell me what you think about the progress we've made in computing."

"Good morning, students! I hope you all had a very good weekend with your various guests and family members. I was very pleased to meet some of them and the weekend has taught me two very important lessons! One is that no one likes an emo magician. No one. And the other is to keep your hamsters away from poker tables! Now let us get to class!"

The weekend had been good to Cal. Very good. It wasn't, of course, without its awkwardness, but it was good to see his mother again; it was good to see her, and talk with her and, with a few exceptions, interact with her as though nothing much had really changed, as though things weren't actually any different than they had been three years ago.

There had also been advice that Cal needed to think about. So, of course, he was doing what any good teenager would do when they had advice to consider: completely ignoring it and finding other things to distract him from thinking.

"Afternoon, everyone," Sam said from her perch on the desk. "It's good to see you all after the parental invasion this weekend. Rodney, I hope you found your sister."

"Today we'll be talking about light. The three primary properties of light are intensity, frequency or wavelength, and polarization."

"The human spectrum of visual is from red to violet, which can be seen individually when you look at white light through a prism," she explained, writing ROYGBIV on the board, near the equations, "but ultraviolet and infrared are just as important for human survival, as well as the survival of the planet. A red shift--where suddenly infrared light is visible to the human eye--is fatal after a remarkably short period of time. Not just to the humans, but to the things that humans depend on for food, such as plants and animals."

Not their shining moment of Stargate use, no.

"Light, obviously, can come from a number of different sources, although the primary source of light on this planet is obviously the sun. Light, which is thought to travel in waves, can be refracted, or bent through the use of optics. We'll get into theories of how light works next week. For now, I just want you to get used to seeing it and measuring it--there are prisms, magnifying lenses, and telescopes for you to work with, as well as different light sources, so you can see how the spectra of light differ. There are also spectrometers, so you can measure the light and try to predict its behavior, if that's your thing."

Abigail Irene Garrett looked rather serious today, considering what they'd be doing. The lab equipment was out, there were no handouts, but she had a pointer in her hands and a piece of chalk sitting next to her that was going to get some use.

"Good afternoon, students. If you could take your seats? We'll be discussing one of the most dangerous and confusing elements in alchemy: mercury. )

Having handwavily sent an E-mail to her students telling them to dress in old clothes they wouldn't mind getting messy for class, Lily was half-cheating and wearing a smock. "Hey, you survived the weekend!" she greeted them. "I was very glad to meet some of your parents, and now that they're gone and I don't have to worry about them frowning at me, we can get to some fun stuff."

"We're doing body painting today. Sort of," Lily went on. "You know how all this time we've been using things like brushes or pencils or pastels? Forget it for today. You can paint anything you want, the only rule is, you have to paint using a body part. If you want to paint with your nose, go for it, but I'd highly advise not huffing the paint because that'd be an embarrassing clinic visit. Oh, and also, one more rule, don't remove any clothing to do it unless it's like socks and shoes. I'd really rather Principal Winchester not bust me, and you can use your elbows to paint with a shirt as well as you can without one, which is to say we probably won't get many masterpieces with elbow painting. So get messy, work out any frustrations you might still have, and have fun."

"I trust your weekends with your families went as expected," Anakin said, slamming the door behind him as he stalked into the room.

"Love is patient, love is kind," he began, looking down at his notes, then snorted and made the universal symbol for "blah, blah, blah" with his hand.

He might secretly be a soft touch on the subject, but he was hoping no one in the room would call him on it.

"In the Jedi Order, we were taught that in order to maintain proper distance, to negotiate impartially across our galaxy, we were to strive for serenity, not passion. To be proper Jedi, we should not know anger, or hatred, or love."

The unholy mix of the three could lead to tossing grandsons through doors. Not that Anakin would talk about that either.

He crossed his arms over his chest and glanced around the room. "Is this an unreasonable standard to hold someone to? What do you think they were trying to prevent?"
