When the students arrived at the computer lab, they would have found a PC running Linux, a PC running Windows, and a Mac set up at the front of the room. "Good morning, everyone," said Mike with a weak smile. His voice didn't have the same level of enthusiasm from past weeks and he looked troubled.

After listening to the radio last night, Anemone was wondering if she was possibly the only person on campus who didn't have a completely traumatizing weekend.  Finally, an instance of the 'Fandom Strangeness' that wasn't going to leave her scarred for life.

No, the encounter with Bernard didn't count.  He was a sweet birdie, and wasn't strange in the slightest.

Aly was wandering around the classroom as the students arrived.   As everyone took a chair, she smiled at them all and perched on the edge of the table at the front of the room.

"Good morning.  Today is the first day we're going to talk about - and practice - some of the actual tools a spy uses."  She grinned, excited.  "Lockpicking isn't just used by spies, of course.  But an agent can end up in a multitude of situations where a little manual dexterity is helpful."  She winked at Seregil if he was present.  "Some of you already have experience in this of course.  Either from another of my classes or outside activities.  And for you, I have something a bit more difficult planned."

"But before we get into the actual practicing, let's go over the basics of how, exactly, you pick a lock."  With that she took them through a short but information-filled lecture on picking locks.

She gestured them all to gather around the table.  "Now, these are all training tools for learning.  Take a turn at them, see what you can do.  A third of picking locks is the theory, the other two-thirds is practice and steady hands."  Aly smiled mischieviously at the class.  "And I don't want to hear anyone complaining this is too hard.  It's challenging, and those of you who've never done it before may take quite a while, but I learned how by the time I was four.  There are sets of lockpicks on the table.  Feel free to try out a couple different ones.  And for those of you who want or need more a challenge, I have some much more difficult locks over in that corner."  She pointed to where there was an assortment of pretty much any type of lock possible.  Including one that didn't actually look like it needed a key.

he came back to the main table with a smile.  "Right then, any questions before we start?"  She paused to answer any that came up.  "Now, I have one last thing for you.  Part of being aware of your surroundings at all times is knowing who's near you and what they're doing there."

"Today, we are going to be looking at pasta," Lulu began, as she leaned against the desk at the front of the home ec room. "There are many ways to eat pasta; most involve some form of sauce." She moved to her demonstration table, taking out a knife, a bulb of garlic, and an onion. "Pretty much any of them will require at least one, if not both, of these, so I'm going to start by showing you how to prepare them."

She demonstrated first, how to peel and mince a clove of garlic. "The thing to remember is that the clove is only one of these little pieces," she added. "The whole is called a bulb. Be careful you don't use a bulb when it calls only for a clove." She also diced the onion, doing it slowly enough that those unfamiliar with a knife should see how she did it.

"At your stations," she said, moving away from the table and washing her hands, "you will see three recipes. You get to choose only from two of them; the third is there only for your reference. You have the choice between the alfredo and the tomato sauce, as the pasta aglio e olio is a little bit too easy, I think, even for this class." She grinned, taking away any sting that might have accompanied the words. "I will add: if you are making the tomato sauce, start cooking the pasta around the time you add the vegetables, so that they'll be ready at as close to the same time as possible.

"Everything you need is at your stations. Pair up -- with a new partner, just as last week -- and begin."

Gym: After Classes

Katara couldn't explain how she'd gotten roped into setting this Club Fair thing up.  But she had and so she was going to do it awesomely, darnit. 

Which was why she was scurrying around the gym like a crazy person, trying to put everything in order for the club fair.

Nathan said as he handed out that week's information packets. If he gave a studied, inscruitible look in Wyatt's direction as he did... well that was probably a coincidence. "Thomas Jefferson, in the Declaration of Independence. Not a law, but certainly a statement that acted as strong guidelines for the laws that followed.

"We're discussing Civil Rights." Nathan leaned against the front of his desk. "In plain language, laws that say what you are allowed to have and do as a citizen. For though the truths may be self-evident, they're not supported unless the written law says so. Of course, there's always a catch." Also a cut tag )

"Today's topic," she said with a faint smile, once everyone had taken their seats, "is cloning." The weekend might have given her the idea to talk about this now, yes. Not that Juli had found the radio to be highly amusing or anything. And she was terribly grateful that she’d been spared any strangeness while it had been happening.

Specifically, human cloning... )

"With that in mind," she continued on, glancing at each of her students for a few seconds before moving on to the next, "I'd like the class to discuss why would anyone want to clone someone when there is no guarantee of them turning out to be the person you wanted. What would be a positive side to cloning? A negative? If cloning was wide-spread what sort of an affect do you think it would have on the world over time?"
