How to Survive Your Own Cooking [Class 3]

"Today, we are going to be looking at pasta," Lulu began, as she leaned against the desk at the front of the home ec room. "There are many ways to eat pasta; most involve some form of sauce." She moved to her demonstration table, taking out a knife, a bulb of garlic, and an onion. "Pretty much any of them will require at least one, if not both, of these, so I'm going to start by showing you how to prepare them."

She demonstrated first, how to peel and mince a clove of garlic. "The thing to remember is that the clove is only one of these little pieces," she added. "The whole is called a bulb. Be careful you don't use a bulb when it calls only for a clove." She also diced the onion, doing it slowly enough that those unfamiliar with a knife should see how she did it.

"At your stations," she said, moving away from the table and washing her hands, "you will see three recipes. You get to choose only from two of them; the third is there only for your reference. You have the choice between the alfredo and the tomato sauce, as the pasta aglio e olio is a little bit too easy, I think, even for this class." She grinned, taking away any sting that might have accompanied the words. "I will add: if you are making the tomato sauce, start cooking the pasta around the time you add the vegetables, so that they'll be ready at as close to the same time as possible.

"Everything you need is at your stations. Pair up -- with a new partner, just as last week -- and begin."

Chad had always wondered what exactly a clove was (yes, he thought about these sorts of things on a regular basis), so now he knew. See? This class was still good for him, even if he could cook pasta in his sleep. He didn't, though. Do that. It would get messy.

Hearing Lulu's suggestion that pasta aglio e olio was too easy for the class, Cassandra wondered if the teacher had already forgotten that they'd managed to catch a toaster on fire last week.

At least there were no toasters this week. So probably no fires.

They'd grown garlic at Kiamo Ko, so that was a familiar enough bit of vittle. The pasta itself, however, had him somewhat flummoxed.

But he listened and watched and did his best not to look clueless.

Makoto was really thinking that nothing was too easy and that Miss Lulu should've let them try the 'easiest' one. After all, even toast had nearly ended in disaster last week.

Mikey was eying up the recipes. He was fairly certain that he'd like to do the tomato sauce thingie. It was about the closest to pizza that he could get away with, today.
